Redefining Excellence
Sony's FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II takes the classic fast zoom and elevates performance to a whole new level. This lens builds upon the best parts of the original and makes them even better while simultaneously reducing weight by 29%—making this lens the lightest in its class. Sony has also given this lens a brand-new AF system that promises up to four times the speed and has made plenty of optical optimizations that will appeal to video shooters, including improvements to focus breathing and focus shift. Whether you shoot portraits, sports, landscapes, or video, the 70-200mm f/2.8 will get the job done.
Improved Optical Performance
A hallmark of the G Master line is outstanding optical performance with both high sharpness and smooth bokeh. Using a new design, the FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II promises corner-to-corner sharpness across the entire zoom range—even when shooting wide open at f/2.8. Along with that, a newly designed 11-blade aperture helps create soft, pleasing bokeh.
  • Fast f/2.8 constant aperture allows users to capture images in dim lighting conditions and with a shallow depth of field.
  • Two ED (extra-low dispersion) and two Super ED elements, including one aspherical ED element, effectively suppress chromatic and spherical aberrations.
  • Two aspherical lenses, including one extreme aspherical lens (XA), minimize distance-related aberrations and also reduce 'onion ring' bokeh.
  • Nano AR Coating II controls flare and ghosting with support from a new optical design that reduces internal reflections.
  • An 11-blade aperture diaphragm helps create smooth, circular bokeh at all aperture settings.
Optimized for Video
Taking cues from their cinema division, Sony has optimized the 70-200mm II for video. Changes include a dramatic reduction of focus breathing and focus shift, improved autofocus performance, and a Linear Response MF system to ensure consistent, natural-feeling operation. Full-time Direct Manual Focus (DMF) also makes it easy to make quick adjustments using the focus ring while in AF modes.

The exterior design of the lens also sees some big changes. One clear example is the addition of a physical aperture ring that was not present on its predecessor. Users will be able to de-click this ring at the flip of a switch for smooth iris control during shooting. This provides shooters with independent controls for focus, zoom, and iris.
Fast Autofocus and Reliable Image Stabilization
Among the biggest improvements with the 70-200mm II is a vastly superior autofocus system. Now comprised of 4 XD Linear motors, the lens now performs up to four times faster. Focus tracking while zooming sees its own specific improvement of around 30% when compared to the previous model. Users will also enjoy high-speed continuous shooting at up to 30 fps with AF and video will benefit from the near-silent operation.

An advanced Optical SteadyShot image stabilization system will ensure sharp images while shooting handheld at even the longest focal lengths. Multiple modes are available, including standard, panning, and a new Mode 3 for moving subjects.
Professional Design and Durability
Being designed for professional use, the 70-200mm II has been ruggedized with advanced weather sealing. The weight has also been reduced by approximately 29%, to just under 2.3 lb, making this model among the lightest in its class. Optics have also been designed for balance with an internal zoom mechanism, minimizing front heaviness to provide a more ergonomic center of gravity.

Other features of the physical design include three programmable focus hold buttons, all located in 90-degree increments, for more tactile control over select settings in both landscape and portrait orientation. Users also have a removable tripod foot for added stability on support systems.
  • Focus range limiter switch will optimize performance and improve AF speed and responsiveness in certain shooting scenarios.
  • Zoom ring torque has been optimized.
  • Iris lock switch prevents users from accidentally moving the aperture ring to or from the auto aperture position.
  • Front lens element has a fluorine coating that repels water, oil, and other contaminants and makes the lens easier to clean.
  • Included lens hood features a locking button and a filter window for easier adjustment of variable filters (e.g. polarizers, ND).
Teleconverter Compatibility
The FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II is compatible with Sony's optional FE 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters. These teleconverters can be used while still retaining full autofocus capabilities. When used, the 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters will provide effective focal lengths and apertures of 98-280mm f/4 and 140-400mm f/5.6, respectively.

Although expensive, this lens is worth every penny. So sharp, quick, light and tough. I am continually amazed at the images this lens produces.

Outstanding lens

I'm very satisfied with the Sony 70-200 2.8 GM II and I highly recommend it. I've used this lens for sports, wildlife, portraits, nature, landscape, and astrophotography. In all those experiences, it has performed extremely well. For me, the 70 200 focal length is a must have in a photographer's bag. Very versatile with a great aperture for subject separation and low light capabilities. Image quality and performance: Provides great Image quality, very sharp, very nice contrast, extremely low to non-existing chromatic aberration, extremely low to non-existing focus breathing. The bokeh this lens produces is something beautiful, it even has an artistic look to it. Overall build quality: Very good, solid, and extremely light. It might have a "plastic" feeling to it, but I believe nowadays Sony and many other brands are developing their lenses with good quality weight saving materials. The focus and zoom ring have a thin non-sticky rubber, which I like better compared to other brands. The lens hood is beautiful, well constructed and feels like a high-quality product. No complaints with the aluminum collar as well. The "white" finish might be more difficult to maintain compared to a black finish, but it also has a big benefit by reflecting sunlight and improving heat dissipation. The focus and zoom ring are just perfect in my opinion. Well located, smooth, quick, and accurate. Also, the aperture ring is solid and very well designed with the lock and the click On-Off feature. Dust and Moisture-Resistant Construction: I've tested this lens in different " normal" conditions, (not extreme) light rain, humid and hot outdoors. So far, the lens has performed extremely well. One thing a have notice, is that it has a relative thin rubber seal around the metal mount compared to Nikon's Z series lenses (thinker and robust). Not quite sure this really matters as long as it works. Size: Small and compact compared to other 70-200mm f2.8. The size is just perfect, great to hold and great to use. The small size of this zoom lens is something to admire. It saves a lot of space in the backpack. Colleagues (and I) usually have a hard time believing how small and light this lens is. Weight: Extremely light, so light is hard to believe. I've used this lens in different assignments, non-stop for several hours and I have never complained about it. Compared to other internal zoom lenses, this one is just a joy to use. Perfect for hiking and long assignments. Focus mechanism: This lens is lighting fast, autofocus is extremely fast and 100% silent. The four XD linear motors are just superb. Great for either video or stills. Focus is almost if not instant. The only thing I would mention, is that sometimes using AF you might notice a slight "pulse". But I'm pretty sure this is a camera AF topic and not a lens issue. Manual focus is great. The Linear Manual Focus Response is a joy to use. The focus ring is smooth, extremely responsive, and accurate. Optical Steady Shot Image Stabilization: I don't own other 70-200 2.8 to compare it with. But I say it's pretty good. I've heard Nikon's Z series system is better but is something I can't confirm. The lens has 3 OSS modes and an On-Off button in the lens panel. I find this very useful but sometimes I can't notice a big difference between one mode and the other. "Weird" sound when is turn off by moving elements: Nothing to worry about (in my opinion). This is normal in the new Sony focus mechanism; the element is "floating" in the rails, and this might slightly move back a forth when the lens is turned off. Weaknesses: So far, I'll say the only weakness I've came to realize is the price. I consider this lens a bit expensive compared to Nikon's Z ($2,396.95) and Canon's RF ($2,599.00) series with an applied discount. You can get these two lenses with significant discounts that will save you significant dollars. Does the light weight, small size, and amazing focus mechanism enough to justify the price? Sometimes it feels like it does and sometimes not. But this lens could definitely be more competitive and attractive with a good discount and/or a similar price as the other two brands.

The 70-200mm 2.8 is by far my favorite lens. It provides so much value when shooting. Years ago, I was saving to buy my first 70-200mm by Canon, the 2.8 version II. I borrowed a family friend's unit for about a year. It was a must-have for the work that I was doing. I finally purchased it and have been using it for six years. The only downside was that it was heavy for most users. For years, I thought Canon and Nikon had the best native lenses. I ordered this G master 2.8 II for my FX6 and was blown away. This lens is incredibly light and is whisper silent. It is exceptionally sharp from all distances. I'm so excited to purchase a mirrorless body for photos.

A must for every Sony user

I love this thing. It's a zoom that performs like a prime! Great value. Add the 2x to have more fun and variability with it.

Ok sharpness wide open, not good enough for the price though

After purchasing the Sony GM 24-70 2.8 II and being astonished at its sharpness and color fidelity, I purchased the Sony GM 70-200 2.8 II. This lens is priced very high and I expected it to perform as such. Wide open, the sharpness is ok and not in the same realm as the 24-70 2.8 II. It sharpness improves at F4.0, so essentially it's best at F4 not 2.8.= Thus is contrary to the "unbiased' YouTubers reviews. I thought I had a dud. Unfortunately 30 days had passed. I then looked at other actual owners experiences in various forums and they have had a similar experience. So, my advice is that as soon as buy this lens test it and if it is not what you expect for the price, return it. Do not believe online or YouTube reviewers, they are essentially sales people. I am giving this lens a generous 3 stars because it's light compared to my previously owned Canon 70-200 2.8 II, but my years old canon lens is still optically superior to this one. So, I would not recommend the Sony GM 70-200 2.8 II.

I plan to use this with an a1 w/ the verified grip attached and Xlr show mounted with a mic. Given the extra weight on the camera, should a tripod still be mounted to the collar? Or will I need to purchase a lens support system and attach the tripod to the camera?

A lens support system would be ideal. All the gear you have is pretty pricey. The lens support will guarantee that everything will work as it should.

Would it be possible to use an 82mm step up ring with the lens hood? It might be a long shot, but the hood seems like it might be big enough, and I really would prefer to have only one set of filters (especially because I'm considering transitioning to an expensive magnetic filter set).

You cannot use the included hood on the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II Lens with a 77-82mm step-up ring.
