Nikon NIKKOR Z 28mm f/2.8 Overview

A wide-angle prime that's as compact as it is versatile, the NIKKOR Z 28mm f/2.8, from Nikon, offers a comfortably broad field of view that suits a variety of applications, ranging from architecture to landscape to street subjects. The f/2.8 maximum aperture benefits working in available lighting and controlling depth of field and also contributes to a sleek and portable form factor.

In terms of handling, a dual stepping motor AF system offers quiet and smooth focusing performance that benefits both stills and video capture, and a programmable control ring can also be set for intuitive adjustment over a variety of camera and exposure settings.

Wide-angle prime lens is designed for FX-format Nikon Z-mount mirrorless cameras and can also be used with DX-format models, where it provides a 42mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/2.8 maximum aperture suits working in available lighting conditions and also contributes to the compact overall form factor.
Two aspherical elements are featured in the optical design and help to limit spherical aberrations and distortion in order to achieve high sharpness and accurate rendering.
Super Integrated Coating suppresses flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Dual stepping motors deliver impressively smooth, quiet, and fast autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications. Full-time manual focus override is also possible, and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Programmable Control Ring is, by default, set to adjust manual focus but can also be used to control aperture or exposure compensation.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

This is the perfect fixed focal length Nikkor Z Lens. Paired with my Z5 or Z6II camera this is an ideal walking around lens. Economical and razor sharp.

A lens for casual carry and more

On a targeted photo mission, I'll put a variety of appropriate lenses in my bag. On a photography hike or a trip to unfamiliar territory, I'll take a do everything, wide-range zoom. But when I go out with photography as a secondary purpose, I want the smallest, lightest, mid-range lens I can find. This is it. It's also fast enough for indoor, available-light and wide enough for street. The plastic mount doesn't offer the satisfying click or water resistance of some other Z-mount lenses, but you can't beat the price.

Tiny, good optics, affordable

I've wanted a small lens for my Z6 for a while, and this fits the bill. At 28mm you're not going to use this for every situation, but it's a reasonable walking around lens if you want to keep your camera size as small as possible and lightweight. Reviews will mention is has average optics (it's not an S-Line lens), but for me this is a nice addition to my kit.

Wider - Better

Wider than a fixed 35mm lens for walking around photography. Fast enough to benefit from high ISO specs of Z cameras. And very sharp.

Long wait for a native 28mm lens for the Z system. Although I knew this is a "standard quality" lens, I have been very surprised by the IQ on such a small and light package. Sharper than my legendary 24-70mm f2.8G at @28mm, it delivers great images with really minimal weight. Colors not as contrasty and rich as that zoom (which I feel is pretty warm) but it gives some nice, cool, real life tones. Nothing that can't be adjusted in Lr to your preference. Enjoying this glass a lot, great indoor performance (bump up ISO) gives a superb, intimate reportage look to your pictures, and a very classic old school perspective at the street. Portraits are amazing, as I like to show some context in them, and here this focal length shines. Not as wide and distorted as 24mm but definitely more angular than 35mm. I'm summary, superb little lens suited to everyday shooting which can also withstand a more dedicated Pro use. Cheers!

What is the difference between the standard and special edition?

The previous answer was incorrect. According to Nikon's listing for this lens, this also has a programmable control ring. Per Nikon's site, the SE is described as "Street smart with a classic look." It's meant visually to complement Nikon's Z fc camera that they make with retro styling and controls. That's why it's the version available here in a bundle with the Z fc. I can only assume that the optics are identical.
