Nikon 7440 overview

  • 1Description

Specifically engineered and built to withstand the rigors of life on the water, Nikon's black 7x50 OceanPro Binocular produces bright and clear images while reducing the disorientation commonly experienced when using binoculars in marine environments due to the rolling action affecting the horizon line when seen through magnified optics.

Its large objectives give the binocular high light transmittance for enhanced low-light performance such as on cloudy or foggy days, and the large exit pupil helps to further reduce the effects of rough and rolling seas while ensuring the entire scene remains visible in low light. The Porro prism optical design, combined with multi-coated optics, produces high-contrast images with true color representation and a rich depth of field that allows you to more easily discern the relative distances between objects in the field of view.

To hold up to the salt water and spray, the housing is made of corrosion- and impact-resistant polycarbonate, with rubber armoring on the exterior to provide protection against drops and impacts as well as a slip-resistant grip in cold or wet conditions. The optical tubes are nitrogen filled for fogproof performance, especially when moving between extreme temperature variations. It is waterproof to 3.3 feet for up to 5 minutes, and if it should go overboard, a high-visibility floating neck strap is included so you'll be able to fish it out of the water in time.

Optical Performance
  • Moderate 7x magnification helps to produce a wide exit pupil for enhanced low-light use and easier viewing on rough or rolling seas
  • Large 50mm objective lenses boost light-gathering ability for brighter views in challenging conditions such as at dawn and dusk or in heavy fog
  • Traditional Porro prism light path presents a rich depth of field to more easily discern the relative position of objects within the field of view
  • BAK4 prisms deliver a round exit pupil and a crisp and clear image with limited edge distortion
  • Anti-reflection multi-coated optics improve light transmission for brighter high-contrast images
  • Generous 378' field of view at 1000 yards
Use and Handling
  • Large slip-resistant center focusing knob is easy to manipulate in cold or wet conditions or while wearing gloves
  • Fold-down rubber eyecups contour to the eye socket to block peripheral light from affecting the view
  • Right-eye dioptric correction allows users to compensate for optical prescriptions for sharper views
  • 56-72mm interpupillary adjustment range
  • Tripod mountable with optional adapter
  • Long 22.7mm eye relief allows the optic to be held away from the face and prevent accidental impacts on rough seas, and to make viewing more comfortable with reduced eyestrain
  • Wide 7.1mm exit pupil allows users to enjoy the entire view without vignetting, even on rough seas

Nikon 7440 reviews

7x50 OceanPro Binoculars is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Rugged Binoculars The need was for high powered, quality binoculars that could stand the rigors of being in the field including weather resistance and rough handling. The Nikon 7x50 Ocean Pro Binoculars well satisfies this need. They are very water resistant and do not fog up when transitioning from an air conditioned environment to a hot and humid one. The polycarbonate body will not corrode. The lifebelt neck strap is a clever way to keep the binoculars afloat should they fall overboard. Besides being rugged, these binoculars provide an excellent, distortion free image. Yes, the focus knob is stiff but not unduly so. The captive eyepiece covers are a nice feature. I have owned many binoculars in my lifetime and these are the best.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good My first binoculars after considerable online research. Seem to be very well made, inspiring confidence. That they are made waterproof would be one factor. Number of reviews mention that center focus wheel is rigid. Not the case. It may be because I bought them towards the end of the product cycle when this known issue might have been addressed. This model is discontinued now and does not feature on Nikon website. The focus is quick and sharp. Only two issues to consider: the weight is heavy, which probably will be at the 50 objective lens size and with high sturdiness of this binocular. The other is when glasses wearers like me fold down the ocular lenses side coverings, the provided two covers of ocular lenses do not fit. So when you take an interval during sight seeing etc you either have to roll back up ocular lenses side covers to put the plastic covers on (bit of a hassle) or you have to pause without putting on the ocular lenses covers. I will check with B&H if it has a larger diameter cover for ocular lens, which I will have to pay extra for of course. The attached objective lens covers are a great convenience. Full marks also to the yellow non-sinkable thick strap. If the binoculars fall into water, it is supposed to keep them afloat. Very much hope will never have to test that.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value and a some hidden virtues. I do public science outreach (for disadvantaged elementary school students) in the field of astronomy. Binoculars are great for sharing with users who may never have used optics of any kind; they are simple and intuitive. In this program the binoculars are generally mounted on parallelogram mounts which allows the height of the eyepieces to be raised and lowered for different users, without losing the target. Given that these are generally young users whose pupils fully dilate at night, I was looking for an affordable, durable, comfortable, easy-to-use binocular with a 7mm exit pupil for maximum nighttime brightness. The 7x50 Nikon OceanPros have been perfect for this scenario. Though beefy and heavily armored, the carbonate chassis makes them light. The eye relief is generous so they are comfortable. Center-focus is much simpler for multiple users, especially novices. One added benefit that isn't apparent from the specifications is that these have tremendous depth of focus. That is a significant range of the field in front of the user remains acceptably focused. Not so important at infinity as for astronomy (i.e., all targets are effectively the same distance in focus terms from the user) but a real treat terrestrially. It also helps flatten the field I suspect since these seem to lend accommodation even to older eyes. I am very happy with these binoculars and heartily recommend them to anyone looking for a bright, comfortable, durable, well-corrected, large exit pupil terrestrial or astronomical binoculars.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from meets needs Have yet to use on the water but initial impression is that the product is consistent with what is advertised. Image is sharp Focus is smooth and easy Have not dunked in the water yet. I plan on using on inland water and general spotting. I did not want the compass and range finder that is on the newer models. Seems to add weight and more things to go wrong so was pleased to find the older model. Only negative is that the eye caps fall off easily and will be easy to lose.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Product I bought these binos for my 15 man group three years ago and we have had great service from them. The 7x50 gathers a lot of light in dark conditions and were perfect for our requirements. We use them on a daily basis and they have proven to be very rugged. They take a lot of abuse with no problems. We had Steiner binos before the Nikons and they did not hold up as well. Overall I love these binos and would buy them again in a heartbeat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic for this price! Combining center focus with full waterproofing is a challenge. Most marine binos are individual focus for this reason. I was reluctant to purchase the Oceanpro 7x50s but very glad that I did. This set has smooth and free focus which I really need. We have a wonderfull set of older Fujinon Meibo 7x50 7*30' marine binos. They are individual focus and are so tough to get adjusted corectly that they are always set to infinity. Nothing closer than 300ft is clear. The Meibos are fine for navigating and night sky vewing, but the Oceanpros with more modern coatings and center focus do this and more and do it better. Very bright and crisp from 25ft to infinity. Just to note: my eyes are set close to one another which has the effect of giving the focus knob a bit more access as the binos are folded inward, and my hands are not small. These may not be perfect for everyone but they are for me. Absolutely fun to use. Colors just pop, and the depth of field creates an artistic view. (OK I am a photographer. I'll stop here). The floatation on the strap is a bit wierd, but at this price I can't drop a star for that. Give them a try. If the focus is stiff just realise that they all aren't like that.
