OM SYSTEM OM-5 Mark II Mirrorless Camera (Silver)
Compact, Lightweight, Adventure-Ready
Returning to the light footprint and high-res imaging standards OM System is known for, the second-generation OM-5 Mark II Mirrorless Camera boasts improvements in comfort and convenience to reassert itself at the apex of adventure-friendly cameras.
What's New in the Mark II
USB-C Charging
The OM-5 Mark II has a USB-C port allowing both power delivery and high-speed transfer of photos and video. The new port also makes it possible to use portable power banks, available separately, to charge the camera on the go for all-day shooting in any environment.
Computational Photography Button
The computational photography button, located on the camera's top plate next to the shutter release button, gives the user direct access to a wide array of creative tools, such as High-Res Shot, Live ND, Focus Stacking, HDR, and Multiple Exposure modes without having to enter the menu.
New Shooting Modes
Two new creative shooting modes were designed specifically to aid low-light shooters:
  • Night Vision mode brings out the details of a scene shrouded in darkness, clearly displaying both the night sky and the foreground and simplifying composition.
  • Hand Held Assist allows users to gauge the stability of handheld long exposures in real time.
New Color Profiles
The OM-5 features two new video color profiles, the OM Cinema 1 & 2, meant to help the user achieve a cinematic look to video footage without requiring special processing or grading.
OM SYSTEM Menu
Introduced in the OM-1 Mark II and the OM-3, the OM-5 Mark II now carries the company's newest menu system, a much-lauded and intuitive organization of features and settings that's easy to understand, even for first-time users.
Improved Grip
The OM-5 Mark II features a more pronounced handgrip, giving users a superior hold benefitting one-handed use.
Imaging Details & Body Design
20.4MP Live MOS Sensor and TruePic IX Image Processor
The original's 20.4MP Live MOS sensor and TruePic IX image processor return, working together to provide fast shooting performance, a sensitivity range up to ISO 25600, 4K video recording capabilities, and a continuous shooting rate of up 30 fps when shooting in the camera's Pro Capture mode, which enables users to half-press the shutter button to begin capturing fast-moving subjects before normal shooting begins.
121-Point All Cross-Type Phase-Detection AF
An advanced autofocus system combines both 121 phase-detection AF points and 121 contrast-detection AF points for focusing performance that is both quick and accurate.
  • All 121 phase-detection points are cross-type for improved precision in mixed lighting conditions, providing enhanced subject tracking capabilities.
  • Different focusing modes are available to suit working in various shooting conditions as well, including Group Target 25-point mode for moving subjects such as birds and wildlife.
  • Face and Eye subject detection modes are available, as well as Starry Sky AF mode as well as individual AF area settings for vertical and horizontal positions.
5-Axis Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization
In-body, sensor-shift image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 6.5 stops with any lens in use and compensates for camera movements that become especially noticeable when working with telephoto shots, macro imagery, and long exposures.
  • The image stabilization system works across five axes to compensate for vertical angle rotation, horizontal angle rotation, horizontal shift, vertical shift, and rolling camera shake movement.
  • When paired with select lenses featuring optical image stabilization, shake compensation up to 7.5 stops is possible.
  • The system benefits use with the High-Res Shot and Hand Held Assist shooting modes, allowing you to capture sharp images with incredible detail, even in low light.
DCI and UHD 4K Video Recording and OM-Log400
The sensor and processor also support recording both DCI (4096 x 2160) and UHD (3840 x 2160) 4K movies.
  • When working in DCI, a true 24p frame rate is used, while UHD 4K is available in frame rates up to 30p.
  • Audio recording is possible using the built-in stereo microphone, and an external mic jack is available for improved audio recording quality.
  • Limitless video recording is possible, within the constraints of storage and battery.
  • Time-lapse Movie mode is also available for recording up to 4K UHD resolution.
  • The camera can be used as a UVC/UAC web camera when connected to a compatible device via USB-C cable.
  • The rear LCD shows a red Recording rectangle when live capturing footage, and a red indicator lamp on the front of the camera lights up during recording as well.
Creative Shooting Modes
In addition to Night Mode and Hand Held Assist, the OM-5 Mark II carries a variety of creative shooting modes:
  • Simulating the effects of a neutral density filter, Live ND 16 mode results in blurred subject movement by combining exposures into a single image to replicate a photo taken at slower shutter speeds. This is particularly suitable for photographing moving water and clouds.
  • Focus stacking mode records multiple sequential frames then composites the exposures into a single image that exhibits an extended depth of field.
  • High-Res Shot mode offers the equivalent output of a 50MP image in handheld mode, and an 80MP image using a tripod.
  • Live Composite mode gradually builds up an exposure over time without overexposing key elements within the frame and is ideal for long exposures, nighttime shooting, and light painting applications.
  • Vertical Video mode provides a 9:16 aspect ratio for easily integrating videos on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and other similar platforms.
Designed for the Elements
IP53-rated, the OM-5 Mark II offers superior weather protection and withstands some of the harshest conditions in the field. Its tough construction renders the camera freezeproof, dust and splash-resistant, and operable at temperatures as low as 14°F.
Body Design and Connectivity
  • High-resolution 2.36m-dot electronic viewfinder for eye-level monitoring and clear, distortion-free viewing.
  • Rear 3.0" 1.04m-dot LCD monitor features a vari-angle design to support working from a variety of angles, and it is also a touchscreen for intuitive menu navigation and image playback.
  • Included BLS-50 rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides approximately 310 shots per charge.
  • Single SD memory card slot is UHS-II compatible for fast read/write speeds.
  • Wide accessory compatibility provided with the incorporation of a microphone port, a top hot shoe, USB-C and micro-HDMI ports, and a 2.5mm port for optional remotes.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth permits wireless image sharing and remote camera control from a linked smartphone or tablet.

OM SYSTEM OM-5 II Reviews

Remarkably underrated camera for everyone.

I have several cameras, including a Sony A7RV (my resolution king), a Nikon Z5II (my daily full frame camera), a Fuji X 100VI (my street camera) and an OM 1 MkII (my speed king) and then my wife spotted the OM 5 MkII (which she loves) and I fell in love with this camera and had to buy one for myself. Why? This camera's combination of small size, results and flexibility made it my camera of choice to carry around with me. My wife's copy is in Silver with a black body and I decided to get one that is a little different, so went for the Sand Beige when they became available (they are on limited release, so tend to be available for only a short time in small production batches). Pros: 1. Small size which is easy to take with you, and makes the OM1 Mk II feel large and the full frame cameras enormous. 2. The camera has a magnesium frame with an outer body made of glass-reinforced polycarbonate which has lead some people to think of it as a 'plastic' camera, but has a very strong high quality finish and it feels very sturdy and well made. 3. Fully weather sealed so can take a lot of abuse from the weather. 4. Very good JPGs SOOC with nice detail, dynamic range and excellent color rendition without touching any of the adjustments. 5. Despite its small size, it is easy to hold in my medium sized hands, allowing larger lenses to still feel comfortable. I use it with the 12-40 mm f/2.8 Pro 2 lens. 6. Modern up to date menu system that matches the OM1 MkII and which is very easy to use. 7. Easy to setup and customize. 8. Autofocus tracking works well (not as good as the OM1 MkII or my other FF cameras, but as well as the Fuji X100VI). 9. Despite its entry level type designation, this is a full featured camera with a number of computational photography features and a full range of controls. Cons: 1. Auto focus is a little slow to acquire. It also has very basic subject (face/eyes, but no animal etc.) recognition, but I never use it and tend to use point and recompose with tracking. 2. Battery life is not that good and you need a spare for a full days shooting. 3. Batteries are very expensive and not that easy to get (as are the batteries for my OM1 MkII), Look at 3rd party options. 4. Poor video capabilities (8 bit only) making video output just adequate and suitable for B role or when you have no other decent camera available. 5. Old processor design results in fairly slow read out speed (62 mS) which is faster than my Sony (100 mS) and just slower than the Nikon (55 mS). This is odd given that it is an MFT sensor which should be much faster, one would have thoughts. This means that you need to be careful using the electronic shutter and panning in videos. If you need a faster read out speed in an MFT camera then go for the OM 3 or OM 1 (8 mS). Summary: This is a fun, very functional camera that is a pleasure to use and tends to make you want to use it rather than leaving it at home. It is a very well equipped camera and will suit everyone from the beginner moving from a smart phene o the seasoned photographer who needs a "take anywhere" compact high quality camera. And the body color (which I was initially a little wary of) makes it really unique and I love it.

A remarkable camera with amazing performance in a compact package

This camera was purchased for my wife who shoots with a Sony A7IV and wanted a smaller camera that gave better results than a smart phone but could be carried around easily. It easily achieves these objectives. This is a small camera that can be easily carried in a small purse or bag and is sufficiently weather sealed to allow it to be used in almost any weather. The camera is flexible enough to give the the user the kind of control an experienced shooter expects from their camera and produces excellent results, be they in JPG or RAW. The 20 MP sensor produces remarkable results with IBIS being good enough to allow hand holding down to very low shutter speeds with no issues (1/15 was easily achievable). Being MFT, the depth of field is excellent for macro shots which my wife loves. Much criticized for being a poor upgrade to the OM 5 MkI, for new users, this does not matter at all. The fact that it uses the latest OM System menus and can be charged via a USB C cable makes it a modern camera, if not a slam dunk upgrade for someone with the previous generation. The included 12 - 45 f/4 Pro lens is also extraordinarily good with a professional quality to the output in a weather sealed package that is astonishing. With a FF equivalent 24 - 90 mm field of view, this makes a very very good general purpose lens, only making it necessary to have additional lenses for special purposes e.g super wide angle (which is quite complex for an MFT sensor, needing something like a 9 mm focal length), super macro (the included lens is quite good at macro shots, but if you want x2 or x4 you will need a specialist lens) and long telephoto (MFT provides some of the longest focal length lenses in a very small size of any of the major sensor formats) if needed. In summary a remarkable camera which is compact with a very high quality output in a very well built weather proof package and with a very good so called 'kit' lens and a wide variety of optional lens when the included lens will not suffice. Thoroughly recommended.

Your specs say "Magnesium Alloy" body, so is it now safe to use a PD Capture Clip without the tripod mount ripping out?
Asked by: John
I wouldn’t do so and I don’t know why BHPhoto is saying this camera it’s a magnesium alloy body build - it’s not. Already dpreview asked if they changed the design of the tripod socket from OM-5 and OM System told them no, it’s the same design of OM-5. Look at the specs of the weight of the OM-5 without battery: 366 grams vs 370 grams. Magnesium alloy would have pushed that number higher.
