Nikon SC-29 overview

  • 1Description

The Nikon SC-29 is an off-camera flash cord that provides full TTL control for Nikon Speedlites when used with Nikon SLR cameras which have the TTL hot flash shoe. 3' long when coiled, it expands to 9', and permits easy use of flash when the camera is mounted upon a bracket.

In addition, the SC-29's AF Illuminator will also provide AF assistance to the camera in low-light conditions. This cord fully supports all advanced flash functions when used with the SB-910, SB-900, SB-800, SB-700, SB-600, and SB-400 with an applicable camera.

Some other improved features are: Posi-Lock (an improved locking switch) at both ends, and the cord on the camera shoe that now connects parallel to the camera.

    Nikon SC-29 reviews

SC-29 TTL Off-Camera Shoe Cord with AF Assist - Coiled 3-9' is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 288.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from 5th time having to replace... The SC-29 does what it is supposed to do and it does it well - but it is not rugged or long lasting under daily use. Unfortunately, it's chincy plastic made in China construction of the hotshoe base renders it a bit delicate. I shoot many events, sports, and weddings. The SC-29 lasts for me about a year before it simply pops apart unexpectedly or starts causing erratic connections with the camera's settings for no apparent reason. The hotshoe is susceptible to becoming loose - probably the reason for the erratic connection to the camera. I always keep a new backup of this unit in my camera bag when shooting important events because it can die or break unexpectedly without warning.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Much faster than CLS The SC-29 makes off-camera flash much easier to use and reconfigure than Nikon's CLS if all you want to do is reduce redeye. I use it on the RRS Wedding Flash Bracket -- for which the coiled cord is a bit too long -- for school concerts. The WPF doesn't get the flash far enough away for really long-distance shots, but the SC-29 allows you to handhold the flash at arm's length, without worrying about line of sight for CLS to work. For close-up photography, it also allows you to avoid the specular reflection from the built-in flash (which has to be up for CLS to work). Even at the lofty Nikon price, it's still cheaper than the SU-800 for such closeups.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Manage your shadows I originally bought this accessory as a way to change the angle of the SU-800 beam. However, I've also found this item useful when not shooting traditional off camera flash. Even with the SB-900 it can be very handy to use this in a pseudo off camera mode. With on camera flash in portrait orientation, shadows can sometimes be cast in a more prominent way due to the flash being to the side of the camera. This accessory will let you raise the flash to a higher position to avoid this problem - camera in one hand, flash in the other. You end up looking a bit extreme when doing this, but it works.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nikon Quality You get what you pay for. I tried a knockoff of the SC-28 by Vello and it was horrible. It kept slipping out and wouldn't lock the flash. Went to the SC-29 instead of another SC-28 because my Graslon diffusor kind of impedes the af assist illuminator when its on the SB 900. Focusing is much more accurate and even seems faster using the af assist on the cord vs. using the flashes. As per fit and finish and locking your speed light into place vs. the imitation Vello no comparison as well. Well worth the extra money over a knock-off brand and I like it over the SC-28 as well

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Getting the Job Done Metal shoe mounts, Locking mechanisms, AF Illuminator that is always pointed directly where it is needed even when your SB-800 or SB-600 is mounted on a bracket. Simply put, it does the job it was made to do, and it does it well. Quality Nikon Product. ... The plastic used on this product does not build confidence in the cords durability. It may be preferable if Nikon would start making more products with metal housings. This cord also doesn't have the additional ports on the side to expand lighting possibilities as the SC-28, and the previous SC-17 cords have. Still, if you need a TTL cord for your Nikon equipment, and you own either a SB-800 or SB-600 this is a great choice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Off Camera, On Target While bounce flash is a better tactic for softening electronic illumination indoors, for work outdoors, or in settings with cavernous, unbouncable ceilings, some sort of bracket to raise the flash well above the lens axis is essential, but to do that, one needs an off-camera cord. This one is well-made, has an illuminator built into the part that fits atop the camera, and even has a switch to turn the illuminator on and off. The length of the sturdy coiled cord is generous, much more than needed for most brackets, but handy if you have an assistant to hold the flash. To complete the outfit, you'll need some sort of diffuser for the flash head of course; I use one of the Gary Fong Cloud diffusers, including the cap.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 5 STARS RESERVED I say 5 stars because of the great construction of this TTL cord. It definitely FAR surpasses the Vello brand, in my opinion. I've yet to use it, but I have attached it already. The mount is firm, as it mounts with the screw, as opposed to sliding into a slot and anchoring with a bolt, putting pressure on the mounting gear. That ALONE is so much of an improvement over the Vello that I returned. I'm waiting to see if this cord really does sync my SB800 with my Nikon's computer. I believe it will and that I will be completely satisfied with it. Reading the specs, I was sold on this cord. I've been using Nikon for many years, and they don't make junk.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Get that flash off that camera! To get the most out of a Speedlight, one must get it off the hotshoe. This cord is designed to work perfectly with the newer Nikon bodies and Speedlights. It allows the shooter to take advantage of the auto-focus assist in low ambient light scenarios. The Speedlight zoom works perfectly too. I use this cord with a Really Right Stuff flash bracket and I just wind the excess cord around the bracket. It works great. The cord really shines when you can either hand hold the flash or have an assistant hold it for you. I shoot with D600 and D800 bodies, SB-700, SB-910, and SB-800 Speedlights. It is pricy, but it is designed to mate with the Nikon system, so you end up paying for that.
