SC-29 And SC-18 Cords Dry Rot Over Time. I Have One SC-29, One SC-18, Several SC-17, SC-8 Cords, All Have Been Used And Stored In The Same Conditions. The SC-29, 18 Are About 15yo, While All Of The SC-17 Are 20+ Yo. Both Of The 29 And 18 Cords Have Dry Rotted In The Cord And Strain Relief. All Of The 17, 8 Cords And Strain Relief Are Intact And Reliable. The 29 And 18 Are Unreliable.

question

Can I use it with Nikon D5300?
Asked by: Javier M.
The Nikon D 5300 has a hot shoe for an external flash mounted above the camera. The SC-29 is designed to enable you to use an external flash like the SB-700 or SB 910 off the camera for additional lighting control. There should be no reason why this wouldn't work with the D 5300.

question

How do I attach this cord to a Stroboframe Quick Flip 350 bracket? If the AF Illuminator end is attached to the camera hot shoe, how do I attach the other end, with a Nikon SB-700 flash on it, to the flash bracket itself? Or is this not possible with such a bracket?
Asked by: Anonymous
You can connect via the 1/4-20 screw socket (screw included with Stroboframe bracket), or you can attach a shoe piece like this one:Manfrotto 262 Nikon Flash AdapterB&H # MA262 Mfr # 262This will let you use the included cold shoe of the bracket, and will reduce wear and tear on the actual flash cord.

question

I have a D3s and have been shooting a lot lately with natural light INSIDE my studio. My studio has some large windows, but if it is cloudy my D3s will sometimes have trouble with autofocusing. I thought something was wrong with my camera and took it in for repairs, but we have concluded that I may sometimes need AF Assist help if I want to shoot natural light indoors and it is cloudy outdoors. The repair guy recommended I get the Nikon SC-29 TTL Off-Camera Shoe Cord with AF Assist. He said I only would need to put the hotshoe part on my camera and wouldn't even need to connect the flash for the AF Assist LED to work. Turns out I already had this cord for my SB 900 and when I try to connect it without the flash as the repair guy suggested, nothing happens. If I connect the flash it works. I know on my SB-900 that I can connect the flash and then change the settings to AF-ILL and it will turn the flash off, but I don't want to mess with the flash at all....too bulky for what I am doing. There is a switch on SC-29 on the part that attaches to the flash with the options ON, OFF, and AF-ILL. I thought maybe I needed to switch that to AF-ILL for it to work without the flash, but the switch will only go from ON to OFF and the knob will not turn to the AF-ILL setting. Can anyone help with this??? Can I use this without attaching the flash and still get the benefits of the AF-Assist that I need in low light?
Asked by: Brenda R.
Unfortunately the repair guy you dealt with misinformed you about the SC-29 cable. In order for the AF-assist feature to work, one must have a compatible flash mounted to it.

Can you use 2 or more SC-29 cables connected together for more reach?
Asked by: Bob
While it may be possible to use two (2) Nikon SC-29 TTL Off-Camera Shoe Cord with AF Assist - Coiled 3-9' together, it would not be my recommendation. If you need a longer wired connection, I would instead recommend purchasing the Vello Off-Camera TTL Flash Cord for Nikon Cameras (33'), B&H # VEOCSNK33, for your usage needs. For a longer operating range, I would then recommend the Vello FreeWave Captain Wireless TTL Triggering System for Nikon i-TTL SLRs, B&H # VEVCTTLN, for your usage needs.
