Nikon Circular Polarizer II Overview

This Circular Polarizer II Filter from Nikon is a 62mm multicoated filter that minimizes flare and glare, providing increased saturation and clearer images that are crisp and have more contrast.

The polarization effect is visible in the viewfinder or on the LCD screen as the front ring is rotated. When shooting on a bright day, the saturation of a blue sky may be controlled, which enhances the definition of cloud formations. In addition, when shooting into water, the reflections often associated with landscape or scenic photography may be minimized or eliminated. A circular polarizer is an essential tool for landscape photography. When shooting through a glass window, museum showcase, or car window, reflections and glare will be reduced allowing the subject behind the glass to be captured. This slim filter ring design allows this filter to be used on wide-angle lenses with a reduced potential for vignetting the image corners.

Note:
Circular polarizers are specifically designed for use with auto-focus SLR cameras (They will also work on manual systems without problems)
Multicoated glass minimizes flare and glare on the sensor or film plane
This filter eliminates ultraviolet rays from outdoor shots as well as polarizing the light to remove reflections, and increase color saturation, without affecting the overall color balance
Effective with cameras that use beam splitters in the path of the TTL light meter and with AF cameras

This product is VERY well constructed and does the job well. Your external cap will still fit (a plus for me) and the imagery is unaffected by the lens. I do not detect any aberrations and consider this a must needed addition to my kit.

Is this good for birds (Hawks with a lot of contrast) in flight on an extremely bright sunny blue sky day?
Asked by: Melanie
The Nikon Circular Polarizer Filter II is mainly for landscapes, reducing reflections from water or glass, enhancing fall foliage or increasing contrast in the sky. While it can reduce the glare off of bird feathers, a polarizer filter has about 1-2 stop loss of light depending on the amount of polarization being used. This would affect your shutter speed so it would not be good to use a polarizer for wildlife or bird photography.

question

Is this filter scratch resistant?
Asked by: Jumber K.
The filter is made of glass and hard coated. It is not scratch resistent. Keep in mind a glass screw-in filter protects your camera lens which would be expensive to replace if scratched or damaged. When not using your 67mm circular polarizing filter place it in the plastic case that came with the filter. When not using my polarizing filter, I replace with a 67mm neutral color or NC filter to protect my camera lens or you could use a UV filter. When not taking photos place the black lens cover over the filter covering your lens. Keep your filters and camera lenses clean and take care when cleaning. Gently blow any dirt or debris that may be on your filters before cleaning. With basic care, you should be fine.

Is this filter compatible with the Nikon HN-29 lenshood, or is that hood ONLY for the original version of Nikons 77mm polarizer?
Asked by: Robert James
The earlier answer was not correct. The original Nikon CPL is wider at the front than the lens size it screws into, presumably to reduce vignetting, and the hoods must match those wider threads. The front section of my 77mm Nikon CPL, and so also the HN-29 hood, are wider than my 77mm or 82mm accessories’ threads. I’ve read that the size is 86mm which might be hard to find.
