How does the wire used for aiming the mic ...

How does the wire used for aiming the mic actually function? Does it attach to the ceiling? Hang freely along with the mic?

I'm theatre director in a school with a carpeted (throughout-including stage)lecture hall venue that we use as our theatre. Maximum size- 300 people. No curtains, fly space, wings, etc. Quality Sound has been tricky for years. Would this be appropriate for my situation?

I purchased 3 of these mics. There are good instructions provided with the mics on how they should be located. I purchased these mics for a small stage used to perform plays for a room of 120. I did not find these mics to be a very effective use for this purpose. I think these mics are probably best suited for choirs. And the directions depict groups of persons who are stair stepped in front of the hanging mics. So I think wireless mics are still going to be the best solution for theatre productions if you are looking to capture individual or conversational dialogue. Of course they cost more but that's really what they are designed for.

How much area does one microphone cover?

According to the spec sheet the the mics have a 120 degree pickup and should be placed 3x the distance from the mic to the closest source across the front of the stage and 2x the same distance from front to back. So if the Mic is 4 feet above the closest performers head, they should be 12 foot apart across the front of the stage and 8 foot spacing from the front to the rear. By going higher you can increase the distance apart but these mics are prone to feedback so closer will work better and give youe more gain before feedback.
