Nikon DG-2 Reviews

A helpful device when focus is tricky

I often take photos of things far away ... like that bird on the other side of the pond. There are many situation in these circumstances when autofocus does not work. Manual focus becomes necessary and this magnifier helps get that extra precise focus one needs to produce an image that can be enlarged many times..

DG-2 EYE PIECE

This piece will magnify small things up close. Does a good job with that. This does not help for distance.

Does not resolve any issues that diminish accurate focusing.

Very helpful for macro!

Works well, but item is not for everyone

I have been using it to help me manually focus my autofocus lens. Obviously meant for studio fine focus, it will help focus for nature photography, but it isn't useful for anything happening quickly and the view field is only partial frame. Dialing in the focus on the magnifier and on the lens takes time and patience in the field, and it doesn't store well on the camera for tucking into a gadget bag. When everything is dialed in it's great. Possibly more trouble than it is worth for how I am using it. I bought one of these outright, that is my full-disclosure statement.

OK product, overall.

OK... I rated it three stars because I had a preconceived idea about how this would work before I got it. It didn't quite live up to what I had in my head. I use this with my Nikon D5100. It required an adapter plate which I wasn't aware of, initially, and had to order after the fact. NOTE: Had I paid attention to my material about the D5100, it was in there. So, that's not the fault of anyone but myself for not paying attention, and not ordering everything to make this work. The problem, at least for me, with this device is that it only, clearly, displays the middle of the viewfinder. It's great for things that are, clearly, in the middle. However, I spend a LOT of time doing macro and landscape photography where the entire viewfinder is critical - especially with hyper-focal focusing and trying to get acceptable sharpness across the whole image. It is VERY hard to do with this unit. QUALITY IS SPECTACULAR on this piece. The optics are very clear and they do EXACTLY what they're advertised to do - provide CLEAR, focus in the CENTER of the image. Amazingly clear and, at 2X magnification which, for the D5100 puts it just slightly better than 1.0X (the D5100 has a 0.75X magnification on the viewfinder). Overall, optically, and quality-wise, this is a great unit. It just didn't meet my personal expectations. Nothing wrong with it. It does exactly what the manual says it does and does that incredibly well.

question

Will this require an adapter for the D500?
Asked by: Rick
I am not sure as I have another model NIKON DSLR. I did find that it fits my old NIKON film cameras without an adapter which was a plus as I use them for photography with the NIKON bellows unit.

question

What accessory is need for a D7100 since the eyepiece is squared?
Asked by: Anonymous
Unfortunately the two accessories you need are not longer manufactured by Nikon. But you may find them used. The first is a Finder Eyepiece for a Nikon FE2, and the second item is a DK-22 eyepiece adapter for Nikon N80. Since the D7100 has a rear LED screen, I think you would be better off with a Hoodman Loupe, if you are looking to zoom in on an image. Also, the DG-2 exhibits severe vignetting and terrible eye relief even with it's adjustable diopter. Hope this helps.

I bought it for my D7100, it works. I checked Nikon's web site and checked compatibility and the D810 is listed. Go the the Nikon site and search on the Nikon DG-2 and look in the tab for compatibility.
