Formatt Hitech HD ND Glass Filter Overview

This 3-stop, 127mm Formatt HD ND Glass Filter, made with Schott-Desag B270 crown optical glass, has several uses and offers the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. They enable the shooter to adjust exposure without affecting color balance. ND filters appear gray and reduce the amount of light reaching the film.

Determining which neutral density filter yields ideal results for any given lighting situation takes knowledge, experience and a collection of such filters.

Note:
Neutral Density filters are available in grades 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 and 8 stops to suit individual needs
Formatt's Neutral Density Filters are a response to the many DPs and cinematographers who find that it is important to shoot as wide open as possible to minimize depth of field - especially with HD
In response to the professional demand for an optically correct and pristine neutral density filter for HD, Formatt designed its HD Neutral Density Filters, which are the ultimate solution to enhance color contrast and are ideal for normal light reduction
Available in all the popular round screw-in sizes and all the standard square sizes
All Formatt filters are finished with a unique edge frame offering maximum protection against chipping, surface scratches and enables easy handling and cleaning
With the filter description on top of the frame it also makes identification of the filter much easier especially when filters are stored in cases on location
Formatt HD Neutral Density filters have the same densities and light stops as the Kodak Wratten Standards
Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses
To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situations
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure
Neutral Density Factors
ND.3 (exposure adjustment = 1 stop, reduces ISO 1/2)
ND.6 (exposure adjustment = 2 stops, reduces ISO 1/4)
ND.9 (exposure adjustment = 3 stops, reduces ISO 1/8)
ND1.2 (exposure adjustment = 4 stops, reduces ISO 1/16)

Pretty Neutral. NO FRONT THREADS???

I'm blown away as to why this filter doesn't have any front threads. It wasn't advertised as being slim or thin, so why doesn't it have front threads? No, I don't want to stack filters, I just want to use a friggin' lens cap! Its really a pain having to unscrew the filter, put it in a case, and re-apply every time I want to move the camera with a lens cap on. That being said, the image quality is quite good. No color shift when the sun isn't in frame. Shooting directly into the sun you get a slight magenta shift to the resulting lens flare. I shoot mostly around 100ISO, f/16, 1/2 second shutter in full sun. Good shutter speed for blurring traffic and pedestrians in daytime urban landscape photography. Could also be good for blurring traffic at night. Does not vignette on a Canon 16-35 lens and 5DMK3 or 6D.

Will this work with a Lee filter holder?
Asked by: Jim
If you purchase the LEE Filters Side Guide Screws 1/2" - Package of 4, B&H # LES.5, for use with the holder included in the LEE Filters Foundation Kit, then yes, it will allow you to use thicker 4mm glass filters such as the Formatt Hitech 4x4" HD ND 0.9 Glass Filter (3-Stop), B&H # FOND.9444, with the LEE Filters holder.
