Impact UBBW60 overview

  • 1Description

This is an Impact 60" white satin umbrella with removable black backing. Umbrellas soften, broaden, and diminish the light output of any flash light source. Umbrellas with a white interior will soften and weaken light more than an umbrella with a silver lining. A white umbrella without a black backing may also be used as a makeshift softbox, although the use of the light will not be as efficient as with a softbox.

Choosing umbrella size is determined by the size of the subject, and the strength of the light supply being used. Choosing an umbrella surface is as subjective as choosing a paint and brush.

This size is perfect for a 1 - 2 person full-length portrait, or a 4x6 ft product setup.

Backing may be removed half way, providing a unique combination of light bounced from different surfaces.

    Impact UBBW60 reviews

60" Convertible Umbrella is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 181.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from It just works. Couldn't be happier! I wanted to buy a larger umbrella to experiment with different types of lighting modifiers and found that the Impact 60 black/white umbrella is a gem. Sure you can spend more on other brands and for the most part they will be better built but in function and type of light the impact 60 umbrella will do the same job for less. I use it for group shots with a monolight reflecting from the inside of the umbrella as well as close ups with the black cover off and shooting thru with a speedlight or monolight. It really is a very versatile light modifier, just as Zack Arias pointed out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extremely versatile light modifier Purchased this umbrella after watching Zack Arias's One Light video. While I already had smaller umbrellas, this 60 throws a larger softer light from a speed light or strobe. It's especially useful for group shots but great for individual portraits as well. Remove the black cover and use it as a shoot through to get near soft box quality light. This belongs in every photographers stable of light modifiers whether Pro or Amateur. There may be better built or more durable umbrellas out there but for the price this Impact is hard to beat. #sweepstakes

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than the average Unbrella One of my last umbrellas decided to break while I was closing it down (usually it's the wind or a dog or something that knocks it down and damages it beyond use). I only used the last one about 10 to 20 times. So I decided to buy a little better umbrella this time. This new one is a better build - a bit more study. I still doubt that it will last more than a couple of years (frankly I have never met any umbrella that last more than about 5 years). But I'm pretty certain that it won't die just by closing it up because it's not as flimsy as my other ones. I'm generally happy so far with the value versus quality of this umbrella.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Most useful modifier I've purchased I bought the 60 umbrella only because I didn't have the ceiling height to justify a 72 umbrella. After shooting with this, it became immediately apparent that this would be my favorite modifier to use. The umbrella is well made, the black cover comes off relatively easily, and so far the umbrella itself seems durable and well made. And if not, it was only $. I use this largely in the studio, and I can imagine that using this outdoors could present a problem given the wind, it's a big sale. It is a bit heavier than other umbrellas I've used, and the rod is thicker than your typical shoot-thru kit umbrella. Definitely the best $ I've spent on a modifier.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Pay more and get better The 60 umbrella is a great tool to get soft light but I not sure about the build of this one. I primarily use this Umbrella outside and I found that metal boning and spars typical of consumer rain umbrella stamped sheet metal is very fragile and easy to bend. The better big photographic umbrellas have fiberlass boning and spars. During one shoot the umbrella blew into wall and bent a spar holding out the boning I fixed by taping length of welding rod to the spar using gather tape (duct tape of the photography world). The umbrella work fine but if I where to buy a new one I think I will pay a little more and get fiberglass.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very happy with this umbrella I actually expected less from this after reading reviews, but since purchasing it I have found it to be very nice quality, sturdy, easy to put the black backing on and take off, opens and closes smoothly, etc. This umbrella has been a perfect choice for me to use with my speedlight as an OCF. Great results with little practice. Very pleased. I do recommend a sandbag for the stand because of it's size. Could see it tipping easily in a breeze, but with a sandbag or two on the legs, it should be just fine.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good umbrella but treat in kindly This umbrella is great when you need to set up a large soft light source quickly. It is very quick to set up and you're ready to go.Keep in mind it is a large umbrella so a good stand is a good investment so you have a nice stable base. Great to be able to use it as a reflector umbrella or diffusion. The shaft is reasonable quality but make sure you dont secure it to tightly to an umbrella holder as the shaft can be squeezed out of shape by an over tightened screw. The detachable black cover has to be treated kindly as the connection points to the main umbrella are very lightweight and will not stand rigorous use for too long. Overall it is a really nice umbrella but probably not for rigorous use and I'd suggest a more robust umbrella for such day to day use on location.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from 60 Convertible Umbrella - Love it! Love the size of this umbrella and the fact that it has a removable black backing. Wish I could give it 3.5 star rating. It's fairly easy to use out of the box, but you'll want to get some practice in removing the backing and putting it back on. Just to get things to line up properly. Don't let this be a discouragement, it's easier than assembling a softbox. I recommend this product. I wish a 7' foot was available, that would be my next purchase. Not so greats.... As with any umbrella, or any lighting for that matter, use sand bags on your light stands. A strong wind and your stand will fall over. This actually happened to me, bent one of the bars on the umbrella, was able to bend it back with a pair of needle nose. Tried this on another brand and it snapped. Was happy that things went back into place with no problem. If I were to manufacture umbrellas, I'd use a little tougher support steel to protect from this happening. However This is a problem with any brands that I've come across, and for the money it is worth it. Enjoy!
