What type of light source would you need to fill this big of an umbrella? Could a battery powered speedlight (specifically an old Vivitar 285HV) fill this or would you need a monolight/strobe?
any flash will do... especially indoors. as you move out into brighter environments you might need an adapter to put 2 or 3 flash heads on it to overpower sunlight, but I have rarely needed more than one sb700.

One more question: Is it really a true 60 diameter, not the 60 measurement of the Westcott that measures along the arc of the umbrella rater than the actual flat tip-to-tip measurement?
The diameter is 58 on the umbrella I purchased. Works great for the price.
