Nikon PC-E NIKKOR 24mm f/3.5D ED Overview

Beginning with a comfortable wide-angle focal length, the Nikon PC-E NIKKOR 24mm f/3.5D ED takes this broad field of view and adds both tilt and shift movements to control focus and perspective. Up to +/- 8.5° of tilt is possible, for focus control; +/- 11.5mm of shift, to adjust perspective and composition; and +/- 90° of rotation is also possible for adjusting the axis of these movements. These movements benefit the wide-angle design, making it ideal for photographing landscapes, interiors, and architectural subjects with perspective and focus control to adjust distortion and depth of field.

Complementing the mechanical layout of the lens is an apt optical design, which includes three extra-low dispersion elements and three aspherical elements to reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations for improved clarity and sharpness. Both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have also been applied to reduce flare and ghosting for improved contrast in strong lighting conditions. Additionally, Close Range Correction helps to ensure consistent image quality and accurate rendering throughout the focusing range.

Perspective control, tilt-shift lens affords +/- 11.5mm of shift and +/- 8.5° of tilt, and both types of movements can be applied independently of one another. Additionally, 90° rotation is possible left and right, with stops at 30° intervals.
Three extra-low dispersion elements help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy.
Three aspherical elements control spherical aberrations in order to lessen distortion and increase sharpness from edge to edge.
Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Close Range Correction system helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the entire focusing range, from the minimum focusing distance of 8.3" to infinity.

Nikon PC-E NIKKOR 24mm f/3.5D ED Reviews

Worth it

Made in Japan Nikon quality, solid and heavy. The lens is still new to me and there is some shooting needed to learn its ins and outs. Ex: Matrix metering on D850 over exposes when lens is tilted.

Wonderful Lens

This lens is well-constructed and suits my purposes for landscape photography. I'm sending it to Nikon USA so that it can be modified for the shift and tilt to be in the same axis. It's to bad it isn't sold with this arrangement.

This lens is awesome, I love the tilt shift function and how easy it is to adjust. I did not know until arrival that it was a manual lens. I don’t recall the listing saying it was manual, so that is my only complaint. I love the lens, great quality and addition to my gear.

Great quality and function with very minor limitation

First off, the optical quality of the lens is great, as you would expect from a Nikkor ED fixed focal length lens.  The tilt and shift functions are what make this lens special, and are lifesavers in some situations, such as architectural photography, and a wonderful tool in others, such as landscapes.  I use it primarily for landscapes, where tilting the focal plane lets me keep foreground and background in focus in situations where even shooting at f/22 with a conventional lens wont.   You can also use it to get the miniature effect. The only limitation with the lens is that the tilt and shift directions are tied together.  In other words you can have the lens configured to tilt and shift in the same plane, or in opposite planes, but you cant switch between them in the field (the newer 19mm PC doesnt have this limitation, but costs a lot more and doesnt allow filter use without special fittings) .  I have found in the field this doesnt really bother me much, as I am usually using either tilt or shift, not both together. I left mine in the factory configuration of tilt and shift being 90 degrees separate, and at least for me this works on the occasion I use both tilt and shift together.  The PC lens is the next best thing to having a view camera.

Complaints About Locking Knobs

This is a very nice lens and I look forward to many years of beautiful images. Before I purchased the lens I was taken aback by a number of reviews that complained about the tilt and shift locking knobs not tightening properly. To clarify, on page 22 of the owner's manual Nikon states, "The lens does not lock completely by turning the shift and tilt lock-release knobs. This is not a malfunction. Turning the shift and tilt lock-release knobs too tightly to lock the lens or forcibly shifting/tilting the lens when it is locked can damage it." Okay, all you he-men out there? Firm but not too tight get's the job done.

Design limitations when paired with an 810

Purchased the 24mm T/S lens to use with a Nikon 810. Been using 85mm T/S for a while and just assumed the fit of the 24 would be identical to the 85. To my surprise, the barrel of the 24 is shorter and thus the control knobs end up hitting the camera housing when rotating the lens body. You are able to rotate the lens body as long as the larger adjustment knobs are not in the top position. The tiny lock knobs have very little clearance between thecamera body, making access with larger fingers less than desirable but not a deal breaker. Not sure if this an issue with all bodies or specific to 810 only. Other than the chubby finger syndrome the lens quality is as expected for a Nikon product.

Very sharp lots of movement

This has lots of shift in my opinion, however, as far as I can see, you cannot do tilt and shift in the same picture, unlike the 19mm. For me it's not a problem since I mostly use shift. But it would be nice if it could. Great lens tho.

Fantastic in Every Way

I went back and forth between this and other focal lengths, and settled on this one. I could not be happier. The pictures are crisp and sharp, and the panoramic photos using the shift are really great. Take the time to find a few on-line tutorials on how to use the lens, and then go out to test its various features. I got it primarily for architectural and landscape photography, and it is better than I had hoped.

At what shift value does vignetting begin to appear at the edges of the image, and how much does it spoil the picture?
Asked by: Andrey
Hi, there is no exact answer to your question--the aperture being used and the lighting situation will affect when vignetting might become visible and it's a personal choice as to whether it spoils a photo or not.

question

Does the AI coupling tang have to be modified and folded back on the F6 and D3s for this lens to be mounted to these bodies?
Asked by: Matthew
The Nikon PC-E NIKKOR 24mm f/3.5D ED Tilt-Shift Lens is not an AI or AI-S lens, and no physical adjustments or modifications to the lens are required to use the lens on either the Nikon D3s DSLR Camera or the Nikon F6 35mm Film SLR Camera. The Nikon PC-E NIKKOR 24mm f/3.5D ED Tilt-Shift Lens is fully compatible with the Nikon D3s. When using the Nikon F6 35mm Film SLR Camera, you will not be able to adjust the aperture setting using the camera control dials (you must use the aperture ring on the lens), and the only exposure mode that is compatible would be the full Manual mode (Program Auto, Shutter-Priority, and Aperture-Priority will not work when using the Nikon PC-E NIKKOR 24mm f/3.5D ED Tilt-Shift Lens). Also, when tilting/shifting the lens, handle the lens with care while shifting and/or tilting. Failure to do so may cause the lens to scratch the camera body. Otherwise, no other adjustments are necessary when using the above lens on either the Nikon D3s DSLR camera or Nikon F6 35mm Film SLR camera.

question

I went to the Nikon Service page and asked about how much it would cost to have the tilt/shift modification performed. It is a standard modification and is briefly discussed in the owner's manual. Three days later I got back and answer stating to send it in for repairs and an estimate. I haven't purchased the lens yet and I want to have an idea what my total costs would be, Could some one who has had this work performed please give me an idea what Nikon charged for the modification and how long it took to have the work performed?. I am seriously considering purchasing this lens.. 24mm PC tilt/shift
Asked by: Joel L.
When it comes to repairs and such direct from Nikon they should give you an estimate on the price. I would contact them again on the price. Costs for that change all the time.

If you tilt this lens to get the entire image in focus, can you then shift (while it is tilted) to get several images to stitch together into a panorama?

You can do both movements at the same time. So I don’t see why not.
