Nikon 24mm f/3.5 overview

  • 1Description

Beginning with a comfortable wide-angle focal length, the Nikon PC-E NIKKOR 24mm f/3.5D ED takes this broad field of view and adds both tilt and shift movements to control focus and perspective. Up to +/- 8.5° of tilt is possible, for focus control; +/- 11.5mm of shift, to adjust perspective and composition; and +/- 90° of rotation is also possible for adjusting the axis of these movements. These movements benefit the wide-angle design, making it ideal for photographing landscapes, interiors, and architectural subjects with perspective and focus control to adjust distortion and depth of field.

Complementing the mechanical layout of the lens is an apt optical design, which includes three extra-low dispersion elements and three aspherical elements to reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations for improved clarity and sharpness. Both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have also been applied to reduce flare and ghosting for improved contrast in strong lighting conditions. Additionally, Close Range Correction helps to ensure consistent image quality and accurate rendering throughout the focusing range.

Perspective control, tilt-shift lens affords +/- 11.5mm of shift and +/- 8.5° of tilt, and both types of movements can be applied independently of one another. Additionally, 90° rotation is possible left and right, with stops at 30° intervals.
Three extra-low dispersion elements help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy.
Three aspherical elements control spherical aberrations in order to lessen distortion and increase sharpness from edge to edge.
Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Close Range Correction system helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the entire focusing range, from the minimum focusing distance of 8.3" to infinity.

    Nikon 24mm f/3.5 reviews

    PC-E NIKKOR 24mm f/3.5D ED Tilt-Shift Lens is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 72.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not a Lens for Everybody This is a very well made lens, which can produce outstanding quality images. However, it is also a lens which has a significant learning curve. There are technical aspects about a PC lens which one must know and understand to get the best results out of this type of lens. For landscape purposes, the ideal set up for the lens would be for the tilt and shift functions to be parallel to one another, instead of a right angle. Nikon will modify the lens to this configuration if you choose (at a cost). However, the Canon equivalent lens allows you to switch back and forth on the fly, which seems like a better design in that respect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Professional Lens A Classic I use this all the time as it is designed for Architecture and Interiors and that is what I photographed also it is designed for product Photography. I noted that one person gave it a rather poor review as it is not for everyone since it is a specialized lens one would expect that to be the case you cannot fault Nikon or the lens for that reason. You should buy this lens if you photograph architecture old and new and interiors and products. You can definitely use it for any other reason as well but that would not be the reason for purchasing such a great lens. Destined to be a classic!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from all around excellence This is not ment to be an AF lens. This is a lens you should use with a tripod on stationary objects that need perspecive corrected. This is the first modern PC lens by nikon. Nikon has had other in the past that have also brought great results. This is made with exceptionally high quality. This perticularly wide angle is much better for the use of correcting perspective of tall buildings. You just CAN'T get the same effects from a normal wide angle as this great lens can give you. The only downside of course with all PC or Tilt/Shift lenses is the price. But with price comes quality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp, flexible, powerful I have a 14-24, but wanted this for the shift feature to shoot trees and for panos, and the tilt for various focus issues. So far I am nothing but impressed. It is sharper across the frame than the 14-24 @ 24 and the 24-70 @ 24, though it has a touch more pincushion distortion than the 14-24. My major issue is that I find the locks for the tilt and shift controls to be a bit small and hard to use, and wish they went a touch tighter. As for the focus ring, it is smooth and accurate. Also, the 2/1 marco range allows for very interesting compositions as you can focus quite close and then tilt to get amazing DOF. In all and for my uses it is a wonderful, near perfect lens.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Glad I made the investment I'm very happy with this lens. I use it on my D300 to shoot architectural interiors & exteriors and for selective focus. I've also used the lens to take several shots that will be stitched together (long staircase, wide wall, etc). It's easy to rotate the lens to use the tilt & shift in both landscape and portrait orientation. The controls get a bit tight in portrait mode (one of them gets real close to the pop-up flash) but this didn't cause much of a problem. It would be nice to to able to use both the shift and tilt on the same axis for some shots, so it's too bad that this is not user-adjustable. For the most part, however, this lens, as shipped, works very well for what I do.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No more large-format for me! I recently moved from large format to a D3x. The one thing missing was the movements to allow composing shots with the precision of a view camera. The PC-E lenses are tack sharp, and provide the movements to compose the way I am familiar. The PC-E lenses are also very high-quality. Much better than the other new AF-S lenses I have seen lately. Metal casing with focusing that is smooth and positive, with no slack or play. I have the 24mm now, but am buying the 45mm and 85mm this month. My only caution is to those who shoot without a tripod. You can shoot this lens hand-held, but it would be a challenge, as very critical focus is not only possible, but necessary.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from As previously reviewed by others I read the reviews and this lens behaves like expected. Sharp and extremely capable in terms of focal plane and depth of field control. I also experienced a little frustration with the small locking knobs, more so by their lack of engagement, than by the size of them (if not really tight the lens can slip). Extemely long depth of field is possible by using the tilt function and as the closest focal distance is less than you'd expect... you can get some other than expected compositions. Make sure you keep everything (like metering) in manual, per the rest of the lens. Meter w/o shift or tilt first, then do you magic. Fun lens... expensive, but hey... isn't that why we have hobbies in the first place!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best 24mm tilt/shift lens yet The Nikon 24 T/S is a very nice handling lens and built to similar standards as the several-year old 85 f/2.8D PC-Micro-Nikkor. However, it now offers electonic aperture control, a boon for usability, but a disappointment for those of us who like to shoot Nikon lenses also on Canon via an adapter. The good news is that optical performance is very high. Having used the Canon 24/3.5L T/S and the Olympus 24/3.5 shift (but not owning either at the moment) I can only hazard the following experience-based opinion: the Nikon offering appears to be the best yet available in the 24mm tilt/shift realm. Congratulations Nikon! Stitched images certainly are one good use of this lens, but creative uses of tilt are also fascinating.
