Tiffen 55mm Linear Polarizer Filter

BH #TIP55 • MFR #55POL
Tiffen 55mm Linear Polarizer Filter
Key Features
  • Helps to Eliminate Reflections and Glare
  • Reduces Haze and Blue Cast in Landscapes
  • Greater Color and Tonal Saturation
  • ColorCore Technology
The Tiffen 55mm Linear Polarizer Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

Tiffen Linear Polarizer Overview

A linear polarizer only differs from a circular polarizer in that it does not contain a quarter wave plane that enables use of auto focus and exposure features. Linear polarizers are best suited for use with manual cameras, such as view cameras, that are not dependent on internal mechanisms to determine focus or metering settings.

Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
Strongest effect when used at a 90° angle from the sun.
Constructed using Tiffen's ColorCore technology.

I received the polarizer, but it is obvious that it is a return. When they cleaned it they left a residue. This will delay our project

Poor polarization - mispackaged product?

I ordered a linear polarizer, but this filter will not achieve extinction when crossed with another polarizer. It acts more like a circular polarizer. The package is properly labeled, but the filter information engraved on the rim of the mount does not denote linear as in this illustration. I believe that a circular polarizer was mistakenly sent in a linear polarizer package. This item is not suitable for cross-polarization photography. Will return for exchange or refund.

Like having linear polarizer alongside circular. Don't always want full polarization.

very weak polarizing filter

Depends on what you like it could be good or bad. Wish it was better described that the reduction is very limited (unlike other polarizing filters). If you have a polarized light source and have 2 of these filters 90 degrees to each other, most light will still pass through.

Dont let the price fool you this is a very well constructed filter absorbing reflections and protecting your lens.

I do a lot of documentation of flat artwork using a traditional cross polarized light setup. In my experience circular polarizers don't work well in that setup. I recently switched from a 5DSR to an R5... and switched from using an EF 180mm macro to using an RF 70-200 f4. Those lenses use different filter sizes so I had to switch filters. I found one of the appropriate size in my filter drawer and began shooing. The resulting photos weren't bad... I didn't immediately realize the problem, but the results weren't as good as what I was expecting. A little methodical testing quickly told showed that the filter I had found was at fault. I quickly ordered this 77mm Tiffen version from B&H. Image quality was back to my expectations again! Life is good! For what its worth... the linear polarizer that I had been using successfully for years was also a Tiffen. The faulty one was not.

Does what a polarizer should

I still have Tiffen filters from my father's camera from the 1970's, they are that good. This polarizer is no exception. It is useful for taming reflections on water and controlling over-bright sunny skies, helping the blues look bluer.

Since you are out of stock on the Tiffen 49mm ...

Since you are out of stock on the Tiffen 49mm Cir. Pol., can I use a linear polarizer instead on a mirrorless camera? My recollection is that Cir. Polarizer was developed to compensate for the effect of the mirror on light measurement in the camera, and if so, then shouldn’t be necessary for mirrorless camera.
Asked by: Kenneth
Yes, a linear polarizer will have no effect on metering or autofocus (PDAF or CAF) in a mirrorless camera, which historically would cause metering and autofocus issues in cameras with mirrors or single-translucent lenses (SLTs).

Hello,What is the difference between this product and the Tiffen 82mm Circular Polarizing Filter?Thank you,Nansen
Asked by: Anonymous
A linear polarizer only differs from a circular polarizer in that it does not contain a quarter wave plane that enables use of auto focus and exposure features. It is generally advised to not use linear polarizers with digital cameras, as digital SLRs are dependent on internal mechanisms to determine focus or metering.

question

Whats the difference between linear and circular polarizers? Im using a matte box with a rotatable 4x4 filter tray. Thanks.
Asked by: Paul
Both a linear polarizer and circular polarizer will give you similar results although a circular polarizer should be used on cameras with beam splitting metering systems commonly found on auto focus SLR's/DSLR's.

question

What range of sizes can this filter fit?
Asked by: Anonymous
This is a 77mm filter. It will fit any lens with a 77mm filter thread on the front of the lens. Tiffen does make this and many other filters in other sizes as well. Just do a search at B&G for Tiffen Filter . You'll see many types of filters in many sizes. I srongly recommend Tiffen filters -- the price is reasonable, yet the quality is very high.
