The Tiffen 77mm Linear Polarizer Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A linear polarizer only differs from a circular polarizer in that it does not contain a quarter wave plane that enables use of auto focus and exposure features. Linear polarizers are best suited for use with manual cameras, such as view cameras, that are not dependent on internal mechanisms to determine focus or metering settings.

Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
Strongest effect when used at a 90° angle from the sun.
Constructed using Tiffen's ColorCore technology.

77mm Linear Polarizer Filter is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Just what I expected There's always this little extra expense when you buy your stuff. In my case, I decided to include a polarizer to my shopping cart before checkout. At college we always used 4x4 Tiffens, and for 10 bucks more than generic brand, it was a no brainer. The effect is very noticeable, specially being that you can easily experiment rotating it's outer ring, which by the way is a bit looser than I'd like (although I did expect it could be that way).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product, low price Took the filter with me to the Caribbean to use with the Canon 17-40mm. Worked well, no vignetting and worked well. For the price it works as well as some of my more expensive filters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works as advertised! On my Canon 17-40, polarizers are almost necessary if shooting during the day or around water. I have not been able to tell any difference between my linear polarizer and any circular polarizers that I have used in the past. Overall, it works great and has saved a number of photo shoots already when forced to shoot in the middle of the day.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Thought of making a variable ND filter ... with two of them but they don't work as a laminated polarized film, they reach 2 F stop max - too bad they are almost useless for DSLRs. I bought the expensive ND filter. They were cheap, anyway.
