Tiffen 72POL overview

  • 1Description

The Tiffen 72mm Linear Polarizer Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A linear polarizer only differs from a circular polarizer in that it does not contain a quarter wave plane that enables use of auto focus and exposure features. Linear polarizers are best suited for use with manual cameras, such as view cameras, that are not dependent on internal mechanisms to determine focus or metering settings.

Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
Strongest effect when used at a 90° angle from the sun.
Constructed using Tiffen's ColorCore technology.

    Tiffen 72POL reviews

72mm Linear Polarizer Filter is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good filter for how inexpensive it is. I use this on an XH-A1 and it works very well. It deepens the blue in the sky and reduces glare, just as a polarizer should. There doesn't appear to be any quality loss while shooting in SD, or in HD. I should also mention that both types of auto focus on the A1 do in fact work while using this filter, even though it is a linear polarizer and it is commonly said that for auto focus, a circular polarizer is required. There's no need to spend more money for a circular polarizer as far as I can tell. My only complaint is that it gives the image somewhat of a sharp green tint, but this doesn't really bother me very much because I color correct all of my clips anyways. It could even be corrected in camera by adjusting the color phase too.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Feeble Filter? PERHAPS this is a great camera filter, but I needed the polarizing effects for a home-brew polarimeter. Rotated against either a H___ PL or a H___ CIR-PL it only dims the light, but either of the latter almost completely block the light when rotated against each other. Note that this is NOT because of the circular vs. linear properties of the filters. If you have never done so, rotate a circularly polarized filter against another polarized filter. Flip the circular front-to-back (not rolled) and you get an entirely different effect! You may need to flip both/either to see this if both are circular. For some of us, the physics behind the gear is almost as cool as the photography itself, and lets you explore in surprising ways

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Buyer beware - not a 100% polarizer This filter is NOT a 100% polarizer filter. It only cuts polarized light two stops. All my other polarizers (including other Tiffens) show very deep extinction of polarized light, at least 6 stops. On the plus side, it only attenuates UNpolarized light a half-stop (vs. a full stop on normal polarizers). Either someone goofed at Tiffen's packaging department, or this filter is not as it is advertised to be. The package indicates it is a 72MM SR POLARIZER, which in Tiffen's parlance is a normal linear polarizer. Tiffen makes a low light polarizer with higher transmission, but its name is 72MM SR LOW LIGHT POLARIZER. The filter itself reads just 72mm POLARIZER. Other than the obvious oops in either specification or packaging, the filter works fine, modulo the high transmission. The action is smooth, but a bit stiff. No complaints about optical quality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excelent Quality I have used this filter for several shots outside and on the ocean. I find the images rendered by this filter to be absolutely perfect. Hue, tone, clarity are all balanced and crisp. There is very little to edit but normal cropping of the image. I even tried out the lens on the pond shot in the advertisement and it works like a charm. Its worth the money... trust Tiffen.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does what it says, affordable, simple. Completely satisfied with this product; cuts down on haze, cuts through reflections, and gives me a slightly more saturated, rich color on my camera. Should note that the filter comes in a standard hard plastic case which can be used to store it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good quality from Tiffen Good quality and very useful - if you don't have a polarizer you definitely should get one - your outdoor shots will benefit immensely - I use this one on my Canon A1 video camera, and it works beautifully.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does the job Well built with smooth inside and outside threads. Great price for a quality product that does exactly what it is supposed to do. Sky, clouds, and foliage all take on extraordinary clarity and color.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from worth the money So far I have only used this polarizer while shooting artwork. It helps tone down glare and protects my lens. It was well priced and suitable for my needs.
