MOTU HD Express overview

  • 1Description

The MOTU HD Express Video Interface w/ PCI Express Card is a high-definition video and audio capture and monitoring device with support for Final Cut Pro (Mac) and Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 (Windows). The HD Express connects to your desktop computer by filling an open PCI Express slot. The PCIe card then connects via the included HDMI cable to the main 1RU, half-rack-wide I/O interface.

The HD Express features HDMI input and output, for both capture and monitoring of HDMI-conveyed video and its eight embedded channels of audio. The HDMI input enables you to directly connect an HDMI-capable camera and capture full-raster, uncompressed HD video straight from its image sensor(s), before it's processed and recorded. The video interface's HDMI output enables monitoring on any modern flat-panel monitor or projector with a corresponding input. Resolutions up to 1920 x 1080 are supported.

For import to the nonlinear editor, select the supported codec of your choice for the video you capture with the HD Express, and the video interface will support it for monitoring output. By importing the video directly as a supported codec (such as Apple ProRes or ProRes HQ in Final Cut Pro) from the HD Express, you eliminate unnecessary compression stages that might result from copying wrapped video files to the desktop.

The HD Express also supports broadcast-quality SD video capture and monitoring for both PAL and NTSC regions. The device features connections for component HD/SD, composite, and S-Video in 10-bit 4:2:2.

Perhaps owing to MOTU's technological heritage, audio is well-served by the HD Express interface. Besides embedded audio channels from the HDMI connections, there's also S/PDIF in and out, stereo RCA analog audio input, and eight channels of RCA analog audio out, for monitoring on 5.1 or 7.1 surround-sound speakers. The interface supports all standard audio sample rates from 44.1 to 96 kHz.

    MOTU HD Express reviews

HD Express Video Interface w/ PCI Express Card is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Apple Color and Adobe AE not supported Apple Color and Adobe After Effects playback not supported. Also limited playback options with Adobe Premier. I made the mistake of buying 3 HD Express for my edit suits 1 Mac and 2 PCs not realizing the limited support. I wish I would have returned them as soon as we discovered the problem but hung on to them because we were promised new drivers and updates. I am sure it is a good product if you only used FCP.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent in out interface. I use it on a PC with Avid Media Composer and Premiere Pro primarily for playback on my LCD screen via HDMI. I had some bugs at first, but finally found how to correctly update the firmware to version 1.07. Now, it's working flawlessly. But you have to choose the right video output format depending on the NLE you are using if you are working in progressive mode. I got a few crashes that required a system reboot. But I am not sure of the cause right now.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Media Composer-Yes; Pro Tools-No I've been looking for a reasonably priced IO for a co-install of Avid Media Composer and Pro Tools. I've always liked MOTU products and noticed they used the ASIO driver and thought there was a chance it could work with Pro Tools as well as Media Composer on a qualified system. It installed easily and worked well with Media Composer. It would not work with Pro Tools and gave me a sampling rate error. Customer support was easy to reach and stated simply it is not intended to work with Pro Tools -end of story.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great device I gotta say I was worried that is was not working as soon as I plugged it, it turned out to be that my TV was 1080i and I had a 1080p setting on it, after making that change it worked just as I expected. Great box.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from HD Express HDMI video + 7.1 surround I needed a HDMI 1080p and 7.1 surround monitoring solution for my MacPro running FCPro and Logic 9. I already have a Black Magic Intensity Pro which has worked well but could only route 2 channels of audio over HDMI. The HD Express install was seamless and has no problem sharing the PCIe buss with the Intensity Pro card and a Sonnet eSATA card. I like the fact the HD Express can also route 8 channels to the 8 RCA output providing many more monitoring configuration possibilities. Only downside, HD Express is not totally compatible with Pro Tools 10. PT can access the HD Express for audio output but not video. However, I am able to run 7.1 audio thru the HD Express and 1080p video thru the Intensity Pro so far without any problems. The MOTU HD Express just might be one of the best and least expensive solutions for getting HDMI video and 8 channels of embedded audio out of the MacPro in support of monitoring video and 7.1 surround in FCPro and Logic 9. I highly recommend the HD Express,

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I love this Being able to preview your work on your own TV screen is a life saver, specially when you're doing color correction. I have not being able to make it work with Premiere CS5, I gotta keep trying, in FCS is quite easy to use.
