I AM SEARCHING FOR A PORTABLE LIGHT STAND TO USE MY FLASH OFF-CAMERA. MOST ARE 5/8 STUD, BUT I AM AWARE THAT ADAPTERS ARE AVAILABLE. SO, I NEED TO KNOW IF THE AS-22 CAN BE USED WITH THE SEEMINGLY STANDARD 5/8 STUD OR IF I NEED AN ADAPTER, AND IF SO, WHAT SIZE? THANKS IN ADVANCE.
The Manfrotto 014-14 Rapid Adapter - 5/8 Stud to 1/4-20 Thread, B&H # MA01414 would work for your stated needs, but would not be my recommendation for your needs. While the above would allow you to attach your Nikon AS-22 Speedlight Stand onto a standard light stand, the light will only be able to be aimed straight, or be able to use the tilt/swivel capabilities of the flash head. Typically, I would recommend the Impact Umbrella Bracket with Adjustable Shoe, B&H # IMUB, for use on light stands, as it would allow you to tilt the flash head down in multiple directions, as well as allowing you to add an umbrella to the setup for a larger, more diffuse light output.
