Super-Telephoto Versatility
Targeting sports, wildlife, and action shooters, this FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS Lens from Sony will satisfy many photographers and videographers who are looking for a bit of extra reach with their full-frame E-mount camera. As a member of the G Master line, it is designed with outstanding resolution and sharpness in mind, along with a relatively compact size, responsive autofocus, and Optical SteadyShot image stabilization for outstanding performance at all focal lengths.
G Master Optics
Characteristic of the G Master line, this telephoto zoom offers excellent optical performance with both high sharpness and smooth bokeh.

  • Two extra-low dispersion elements and one Super ED element control chromatic aberrations and reduce color fringing for increased clarity and color fidelity.
  • Nano AR Coating reduces surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
  • Far-reaching telephoto zoom sports a f/4.5-5.6 maximum aperture range that is an ideal compromise resulting in a lightweight, compact design and bright enough performance for working in available lighting conditions.
  • Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
Autofocus and Image Stabilization
  • Direct Drive Super Sonic wave Motor AF (DDSSM) and internal focus mechanism provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with more natural, intuitive manual focus control.
  • Floating elements system benefits image quality when working at the 3.2' minimum focusing distance with 0.35x magnification.
  • Optical SteadyShot image stabilization minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld.
Durable Design and Intuitive Handling
  • Zoom torque adjustment ring will help provide users with added control over the zoom function of the lens.
  • Focus range limiter and focus hold controls offer more intuitive handling and faster performance when photographing moving subjects.
  • Removable rotating tripod mount permits quick switching from horizontal to vertical shooting orientations.
  • Dust and weather-sealed construction benefits using the lens in inclement shooting conditions.
  • The front lens element features a fluorine coating to protect against smudges and dust from adhering to the glass surface.
  • Compatible with FE 1.4x and 2x teleconverters for reaching focal lengths up to 800mm.

Love how clear and fast this lens is.

Beautifully Unpractical

This Lens Produces Beautiful Images, Yes, Quite Sharp Specially At 400mm. It Is, Though, Quite Heavy And Weird Ergonomics. Many Times I Pressed The Button On The Bottom That I Assigned To Change From Auto To Manual Focus, And That Made Me Lose A Few Shots. The Focus Is Fast But Not Very Precise As I Keep Using Manual Focus For Fine Adjustment. I Can See Sony Developing A F/4 All The 100-400 Range, The F/5.6 Is Quite Slow So That Lens Demands Good Light. The Image Quality Makes Up For Most Flaws, I Like It.

question

It's clear that everyone loves this lens for nature and sports. I'm wondering about its versatility. What is your experience with portraiture at or near the lower end of the zoom range? FYI, I have the Zeiss Batis 135 (and am considering a return) and must stop it down to at least 4.5 if I am at all close to the subject to obtain a usable DOF. Portraiture results? Or is this strictly useful for nature and sports?
Asked by: David
While this lens is popular among nature and sports shooters, it can do very well for those shooting portraits from a greater distance from the lower end of the zoom range.

Does the specified weight (1395g) include the tripod foot?
Asked by: Stephen
I assume it does, because the foot is supplied with the lens, not as an optional accessory, and the ring to which it attaches is not removable.

Should steady shot be turned off when using the stabilizer on this lens?
Asked by: John
No, the in body stabilization on cameras is best left on when using the stabilization on the Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS Lens. These 2 forms of stabilization work together for superior performance.

I used this lens and a7R3 to photograph trumpet swans in RAW. The images of trumpet swans do not look sharp at 100% zoom or Actual Pixels View on the Sony Viewer software, do you experience the same effect? Thank you.
Asked by: George
Yes, I set the Shutter Speed at 1/2000th or faster, the ISO 1000 and the Aperture wide open for swans in flight. I am trying to find out is Sharpness not Blur at 100% zoom on the Sony Viewer sw. Another thing I noticed is the landscape photo looks grainy at 100% zoom but looks good at 50% zoom. I think this is the inherent characteristics of the CMOS sensors (CCD, CMOS). I thought the BSICMOS got better but it is not to the degree I expected. Thank you.

Trying to figure how to mount to my Manfrotto 509 Pro video tripod. I should be able to just remove the tripod's plate and just slide in the 100-400 tripod mount, right?
Asked by: Mary
You need to screw the plate that came with your tripod onto the lens collar and then you can place the lens on the tripod. Without the plate it will not be possible to place the lens on the tripod head.

Mounted on a Sony a7R2 can reach be extended optically without teleconverter?
Asked by: Kevin W.
Yes. With standard digital zoom, pictures captured by the image sensor of the camera are enlarged using digital signal processing. Therefore, as the magnification level increases, signals to be estimated also increase and can reduce the image quality. When using Clear Image Zoom , however, zoomed images are captured close to the original quality when shooting a still picture. The camera first zooms to the maximum optical magnification, then uses Clear Image Zoom technology to enlarge the image an additional 2x, producing sharp clear images despite the increased zoom ratio. The Smart Zoom™ feature allows images to be zoomed without losing picture quality. The central part of the picture is trimmed and enlarged without image processing.

What are the 1 and 2 positions on the lens OSS switch?
Asked by: George
The 1 and 2 switch on the Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS Lens represents the different stabilization modes. Mode 1 is perfect for most cases as it acts as the default stabilization mode. Mode 2 is ideal for panning shots as it stabilizes only 1 axis.
