Tascam iM2 overview

  • 1Description

While there are many apps that enable recording using an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad, Tascam's iM2 Stereo Microphone for Apple iOS Products provides you with an external pair of condenser microphones that plug into the dock connector of your chosen device. The iM2 has several recording features that make it easy to use and allow for superb audio recordings -- while its compact size means it can tag along pretty much anywhere you go.

For the best sound placement, the microphones can be adjusted 180 degrees from front to back. The uni-directional elements are arranged in an AB pattern for detailed stereo imaging while capturing the ambiance of the recording room. The iM2 has its own microphone pre-amp and analog to digital converter for low noise and exceptional sound quality. The unit can handle up to 125 dB sound levels for capturing varied noise levels without distorting the sound. The iM2 also has a stereo limiter to subdue loud bursts of sound.

A knob on the side adjusts the microphone level for quick adjustments. While it's powered by your device, it has a USB input so that you can charge your device through a computer or power adapter to avoid cutting off extended recordings due to a drained battery. Whether you're recording live audio, writing songs using the help of an app, recording during rehearsals or gathering sound effects for productions or remixes, the iM2 is both useful and affordable.

    Tascam iM2 reviews

iM2 Stereo Microphone for Apple iOS Products is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 99.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great overall product Mostly I am using this with GarageBand on iPad 2 to record acoustic instruments or vocal. The recordings are much clearer than that of the built-in mic. However they are also not as loud so if I play acoustic instrument to get loud volume in recording I need to be fairly close. It's really strong point though is handling loud noises without distorting. I really like the portable size. Important to be aware: if used with iPod touch you cannot simultaneously use headphones as it's blocked by the device. When connecting device while GarageBand is running I get my headphone output disabled; reconnecting headphones fixes this.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Much better than internal Good tool. Need the PCM Audio app (does not work well with voice recorder app on iPhone) tested audio record with on-board and iM2 and iM2 is much fuller, better range. Regular user may not tell a big difference but if you ever want to use audio recorded on iPhone/iPod for pro use (documentary, interview, etc.) The iM2 is worth the $$. Not sure yet why the mics rotate and have to go on record standby to see the levels. Also, I haven't been able to playback recordings via on board speakers, need to plug in external speakers. to me this is not a big deal but depends on what you plan to use the recordings for.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Convenient and Passable Quality When I think of the days of hauling my Nagra around, this is absolutely amazing. It's always in my pocket ready for when those unique sounds jump out. The stereo spread is a little tight, and I'd have preferred much more discrete imaging, giving me the option to mix it back in focus, and the quality is a little upper-mid-rangy and less sweet than a high end condenser, but for $$, I almost feel guilty complaining. It's extremely convenient and is always there when I need it, without dragging my entire rig around. And honestly, the audience will never hear the difference.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Better Than I Expected I was looking for a portable quality, but inexpensive, microphone to use for recording voiceovers on the road from my iPhone. The Tascam IM2 does a very nice job. You just plug it into the iPhone and record using your favorite recording app. The mic did much better job than I expected. It's a bit sensitive, but if you practice speaking over it instead of directly into it, you can minimize plosive or popping issues. I also used it to record myself accompanying a singer with my guitar. I just set the mic on the music stand and let it record. It picked up both the guitar and voice amazingly well. Is it as good as my studio mic... no... but it's pretty decent quality for the money.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Has it's strengths and shortcomings Cons: It DOES NOT work with Garageband. Although GB does recognize it, the sound level coming through is so low that it is unusable. -I tried it on both my iPhone 4 and iPad 3 and no luck. I read the instructions carefully and tried connecting and disconnecting the unit and the levels were never high enough to use. Pros: It has good sound... but only with the Tascam apps. The Tascam app is clunky in comparison to other apps, but it's also simple to use if you just want stereo recordings with no editing, and produces good sound. You can bring the tracks out in iTunes at least on a Mac, which is handy. Might be good for simple interviews, recording meetings, but not for music tracking.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice but some issues Good quality recording and portability. I use this for recording live music and voice overs. But here are some problems:1) Gotta switch to mono if you use during movie record since mic orientation will be top to bottom instead of left/right. Assuming horizontal screen during recording.2) Seems the 4S issue with cell signal/wifi disconnecting is a known problem, but from what I can gather is an Apple problem since an iPhone 4 I tested doesn't have any issues. Anyway, no biggie because you should put your device in airplane mode anyway for best quality and no interruptions.3) Tascam free app is very quirky, but there are better ones that you can buy like TwistedWave.4) Does not fit securely on the connector, but not so much that I'm afraid it will fall off. It weighs very little fortunately.5) exporting .mp3 files is much more difficult than it should be, but that is also due to Apple iOS and not this product. Could be a deal breaker to some and purchase a complete self contained portable recorder instead.6) Product feels very cheap and doesn't fell like a $ mic. Recording quality is good though. If this cost $50, I would probably go with 5 stars. While that doesn't change the recording quality, I have a hard time believing this product is going to last longer than 1-2 years due really cheap plastic components.7) There is still debate on if monitoring through headphones works or not. Some have claimed that it works for certain apps and only when using a headphone that doesn't have a built in mic. I have had no luck with the combination of Tascam app and standard iPhone headphones.8) Yeah! A USB port to power the phone through the mic. Booo!, mini USB connector from the 90s when everything else (even Kindles) have moved to micro USB. Man I wish I didn't recycle the 10+ mini USB chargers that I had when Nokia and Blackberry phones were the rage.Overall, a lot of nit picky issues but keep in mind, the same issues on a product that is not related to Apple will get two stars less.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Tascam IM2 Stereo Mic for Apple iOS I do voice work, and wanted the IM2 for a bit of remote work. I was amazed at how simple it was to record, upload to DropBox and import into my Adobe Audition software for editing. It's deceptively light in weight, but the quality is rather amazing for its size. I'm well pleased, and for the price, you be pleased as well. Robert Baughan aka RoB KaCeY

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great stereo mic I use this to make live recordings of my band. It sounds great. The only thing I wish is that it could be rotated so the stereo field is in the proper place when holding the phone horizontal for video. It's not a dealbreaker as video seems to be kind of the afterthought here. For sound recording in loud environments, it's perfect. Oh, and make sure you set your phone to not sleep when you are recording something long. If the phone goes to sleep the app quits recording, which was irritating the first time I tried to record and walk away.
