The New EN-EL18a battery is compatible with the MB-D12 battery grip with the BL-5 battery chamber cover, yes. Nikon doesnt list battery life with the new EN-EL18a, but with the older EN-EL18 they estimate 1,400 shots by CIPA standards. With the EN-EL15 they estimate 900 shots by CIPA standards.

Is the BL-5 compatible with the MB-D17 for D500?
Chandler, yes the BL-5 is compatible with the MB-D17. I ordered three to use with D810's MB-D12 grip. When the EN-EL 18a battery is paired with the BL-5, You can shoot with the D500 for a bigger part of the day. If you can recharge at the end of the day, two BL-5,s and two of the EN-EL 18a batteries would keep you going.

Can I use the BL-5 with the EN-EL4a Battery?
No. The BL-5 only works with the EN-EL18a, and works in the D800, D810, using the MB-D12 grip, and the D500 using the MB-D17. (Maybe others. I don't know.) I have to disagree with the other answer that says that the BL-5 can accept the EN-EL4a battery. It does not work. I have both of them and tried to attach the BL-5 to the EN-EL4a battery and it won't do it.The EN-EL4a battery is designed for (and limited to) the D3 series and the MB-D10 grip, which works with the D700 and D300(s).And as that poster says, even if it did attach, it wouldn't work in the grips because the contacts on the EN-EL4a battery are on the opposite side compared to the EN-EL18a. Nikon did everything possible to make them not work!

How can I charge the batteries of the EN-EL18a if the charger is not in stock. Do the camera D810 charger supply power (full charge overnight) to the MB-D12 to power the EN-EL18a ?

can this cover fits mcoplus grips and fit en-el18 battery to get 9fps with extra longer battery life?
I bought the Nikon battery grip for this and it does fit en-el18 Batteries. You may theoretically get 9fps with en-el15a also inserted but it will depend on your XQD Memory card and how fast it is. Also, there is no reason to believe that it won't fit the mcoplus grip if the mcoplus grip was meant to have an en-el18 battery.
