Nikon 6974 overview

  • 1Description

The ProStaff 5 20-60x82 Spotting Scope from Nikon delivers a capacious magnification spread with a very high zoom power of 20-60x. Initial scanning is already magnified to 20x but then zooming in for fine detail continues to an intense 60x for observing the intricacies of your chosen subject. That's on the ocular side. On the objective side is an immense 82mm of light-gathering ability that puts observation into the low-light situations of dawn, dusk, and overcast days, when nocturnal creatures are more apt to start showing themselves. The scope is made for outdoor conditions. Waterproof to 3.3 feet for up to 10 minutes, it is fully O-ring sealed and purged with nitrogen to ensure all-weather performance. BAK4 multi-coated optics assure optimal high-contrast seeing with superb brightness and color fidelity. The straight eyepiece allows faster target acquisition and an easier follow of moving objects. There is a built-in sliding sunshade for protection from excessive glare or raindrops on the objective. Backed up by Nikon's "No-Fault" repair/replacement 25-year warranty; regardless of what happens to the scope—even from negligence—Nikon will repair or replace (at their option) this extremely well-built and durable spotting scope.

Very large objective lens for a brighter field of view
Compact, lightweight, and smooth ergonomic design
All lenses and prisms are fully multi-layer coated for brighter images
Built-in sliding hood provides glare, dust, rain, and snow protection for the objective
O-ring sealed, nitrogen purged, waterproof (up to 3.3'/1m for 10 minutes) and fogproof protection
Chromatic aberration at the peripheries of the view field is minimized, furnishing color fidelity out to the edge

    Nikon 6974 reviews

ProStaff 5 20-60x82 Spotting Scope (Straight Viewing) is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Greatb optics I bought this scope for birding and it doesn't disappoint. While out on birding events with the Audubon Society, I often looked through other scopes and since I wear glasses I could only see the center of the image through the scope. With the Prostaff 5 I can see the entire image even when zoomed in while wearing my glasses. The optics are very sharp and other birder have commented as to how much better the Prostaff optics are than in their scopes. I did a lot of research before I bought this scope and think this is the best scope available for the money.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Scope is a great value, but... I've owned and used Nikon cameras and binoculars for over 40 years, built darkrooms(remember those?)took photography in high school and college, and generally know good glass when I see it. I've been a birder as long, and am discerning about the equipment I use and own. Nikon has always performed, impressed, satisfied, and lasted for me. This scope is used primarily for birding, but I live on a mountain, in the Rocky Mts. and will take it with me, mount it on my vehicle window, hike and 4 wheel with it, and generally enjoy the fantastic vistas, and details of the geology and wildlife, and share it with my family and friends. I've shopped off and on for just the right spotting scope for a long time, and finally found this mid-priced scope on sale for a great price. It had a good feature set (waterproof,82mm lens for good light gathering, lightweight, 20-60x zoom, 25 yr. guarantee)and looked good on the website, from what I could tell. When I received it, the outer box was smashed, but the inner box looked fine. I assembled it on my fluid head tripod, and focused it thru it's range. It was clear and sharp enough in the lower power registers, BUT, crank it up toward the upper power registers, and there is a significant loss of resolution. 60 power is so fuzzy, it cannot be focused sharply, and I am considering returning it. Do I have a right to expect a mid-priced scope from Nikon to actually be sharp at the 60 power? I believe I do, and whether the objective was damaged in shipment, or the Chinese made quality is lacking, I think I'll swap it for another identical unit, and see if that corrects the aberration. BTW, an angle view unit is available in this model, but was sold out at the time. Angle views are widely preferred, as they are easier to sight thru, but my family is technically challenged, and a straight view is easier to aim. If I can find a unit that focuses sharply at 60 power, I will stay with this model, otherwise, I will keep on looking ;-)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Prostaff 5 20-60x82 Spotting Scope (Stra I use the spotting scope to view birds as part of my research on endangered species and this scope is great! My older scope, the same model but two years older, has a narrower lens and doesn't let as much light in -- the new model is wider and lets in more light so see the finer details of leg bands is much improved. Great scope!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Glass I've been using this daily for over two months and it's a good deal. The light does fall off considerably when zoomed to 50-60x but at this price you can't have it all. 50-60x is still useable. When I bought this a few months ago it was coming with a free Nikon tripod and the tripod is 3 star item at best. Moved to a much better tripod, this scope will be giving me years of use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good quality scope at reasonable price I use the scope primarily for birdwatching, but also use it occasionally for checking targets at a shooting range, avoiding the need to walk all the way to your targets to check shot placement. The scope is quite light and comes with a padded protective jacket and carry strap. The carry strap cuts into your shoulder and leaves room for improvement but I have not seen any optics supplied with a comfortable carry strap except for Leica, and even theirs leaves room for improvement. I haven't used the scope in adverse weather conditions so I can't really comment on how well it stands up to those conditions. Also, this seems like a very good value for the price but I haven't tried the Nikon scopes costing in excess of $2000. The law of diminishing returns in the price of optics probably applies and I expect that the high priced scopes would only be marginally better than this scope. As a personal preference, I prefer the straight through viewing scopes because they make objects much easier to find simply by keeping both eyes open at the same time. This doesn't work for finding objects through an angled scope. The advantage of an angled scope would be for viewing birds at tree top level. The viewing would be easier on your neck, if you can find the birds.
