LEE Filters 9NDG-H overview

  • 1Description

Helping to balance exposure when working in high-contrast situations, the 100 x 150mm Hard Graduated Neutral Density 0.9 Filter from LEE Filters is specifically designed to selectively control brightness in difficult lighting. The filter's design places the 0.9, 3-stop density at the top of the filter and then transitions to clear by the center of the filter for a gradual, natural appearance. The hard-edge transition between the density and clear areas is well-suited for photographing scenes with an even, distinct horizon line, as well as when working with long or telephoto lenses. This filter is constructed from optical resin that is both durable and helps to maintain high clarity, and is compatible with the LEE 100mm filter holder.

Graduated neutral density places the most density at the edge of the filter and tapers to clear by the center of the filter in order to accommodate photographing scenes with large bright areas, such as a daytime sky.
Hard-edge transition between density and clear portions of the filter is suitable for photographing scenes with a distinct, well-defined horizon or line between light and shadow, and is also best-suited for use with a long or telephoto lens.
Neutral density 0.9 provides a 3-stop reduction in light in selective areas.
Constructed from optical resin for overall clarity and durability.
Compatible for use with the LEE 100mm filter holder.
Included filter pouch protects the filter when not in use.

    LEE Filters 9NDG-H reviews

    100 x 150mm Hard Graduated Neutral Density 0.9 Filter is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 37.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great filter with no color cast Just like all GND filters, this will help with balancing really high dynamic range situations such as sunrises and sunsets. The hard edge works great for flat sunrises when shooting seascapes and flat desert shots. I upgraded from the cokin P series products because the color casts on those were giving me headaches and the P series Vignettes on wider focal lengths. The Lee product is massive but will cover all possible scenarios I need with flying colors, little to no color cast and if taken care of should last a long time. The included pouch helps keep it safe from scratches.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great results! Brilliant filter that offers true ND. Time will tell if it stands up to regular usage. The Hard Edge filter is a bit more specific than the soft edge filter because of its effect on the subject matter. Its great for sea scapes or flat landscapes but use the soft for undulating landscapes or exposer balance. This Hard edge filter is perfect for your telephoto lenses because it applies more like a Soft edge filter (if this is what you after). I've found the Hard edge is a little restricting to use when rotated because the Hard edge can be noticed (depending on subject) as apposed to the soft edge which feathers the exposure. If you know how to use it, It can offer exceptional results! Also comes with a nice pouch... but like most of these accessories, you don't use them if you have the right camera bag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent with just one caveat I use this primarily for landscapes, particularly sunsets, often in combination with a Singh-Ray reverse GND. While all GNDs are supposed to be neutral, in practice, I find they all have a slight color cast to it. The Singh-Ray has a slight reddish color cast, while the Lee has a slight greenish/bluish cast. This isn't terribly noticeable unless you start stacking filters 6 or 7 stops of the same brand. I think the color cast in the Lee's is far less noticeable than the Singh-Rays, but this is based purely on my observation, not on any objective measurements. Also, the reddish color cast in the Singh-Ray isn't necessarily a bad thing if you're shooting sunsets.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Overpriced for what it is. Lee is good but the hype is higher. the sides do get scratched. I wish this was made of glass vs Resin etc. the pouch that it comes with had some sort of bar code that got stuck on my filter. When i removed it, it left a mark and i couldn't get it off,... well i was in sub zero temperature and at that point i was in a rush to get my shot. so ended up not using it. I wouldn't buy again. Kit is over priced ...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great filter - very useful I primarily shoot landscape images and I find it very useful during sunrise and sunset shots when the skies are much brighter than foreground. Even mid-day shots with brighter skies can be easily compensated for. It negates carrying a tripod or the trouble of setting it (for bracketing) up during long hiking trips where time and weight are of the essence. This is a great filter and it feels sturdy and the included pouch will keep it scratch free; just don't combine it with other filters. My only complaint: fingerprints and smudges that appear on the filter that needs to be removed once in a while.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does what you want, nice and simple Not a whole lot to say, works as you expect! My only tip, since a hard edge filter is a sharp contrast, make sure you press you DOF preview button when aligning the filter so it sits exactly where you want it to on the horizon.I do wish these were made of glass instead of resin, but thats not a review of the project just a request to LEE filters.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lee .9 grad rocks Using the lee .9 Hard grad for landscape work. Great for sunrise/sunset. Used on recent trip to Maine, acadia nat. park to get more even exposures without having to use HDR. Also used the dark portion as an ND filter along with a dedicated .9 Lee ND, to get 6 stops of ND when shooting waves. Makes the water nice and dreamy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for harsh light situation Great for trying to balance bright/dark light. Large enough to hand hold. Hard edge better for longer lenses.
