The BG-E13 Battery Grip for Canon EOS 6D from Canon is a battery grip designed for use specifically with the Canon EOS 6D digital SLR camera and accepts one or two Canon LP-E6 batteries. With two batteries installed, your shooting time is effectively doubled. Moreover, when one battery is drained, it can be removed and recharged while you continue shooting with the other battery. In addition, the BG-E13 can utilize 6 AA batteries and comes with a battery tray designed to hold 6 AA/LR6 batteries. It can also be powered by the optional ACK-E6 AC Adapter Kit, which provides for an uninterrupted power supply.
More DetailsThe curved design of a battery grip offers a comfortable and secure way in which to hold your DSLR, especially in the vertical position. And the BG-E13 comes with an alternate shutter release button, AF start button, AF point selection button, AE lock/FE lock button, multi-controller, multi-function button and main dial to facilitate shooting when held vertically. The BG-E13 is designed with anti-slip rubber grip to further improve handling, a tripod socket to mount your camera directly to a tripod and a wonderful touch: a holder for the camera's battery door so as not to lose it when the battery grip is installed.

Other than more battery juice and vertical controls, Does it improve the camera's performance of the Canon 6D? (Some cameras have faster burst rate, or burst capacity when a fully-loaded grip is attached) ?
I am not sure if it increases burst rate, but the burst rate does seem to suffer when you load the grip with AA batteries.

Canon BG-E13 is for the eos 6D which includes the Mark II, right?
No, the Canon BG-E13 is only for the original Canon 6d. The Canon 6d Mark II uses the Canon BG-E21 battery grip.

question
I just got this item, and it is working great as a power source, but none of the buttons (shutter release etc..) are working. The power button on the grip is on. Any suggestions?
Make sure that the vertical grip switch is turned to the ON position. The vertical grip switch can be found near the vertical control buttons on the side of the battery grip.

The Canon 6Ds battery door has a locking pin which is used to remove the door. When the battery door is in the open position, you will see the release tab on the underside.

question
Hi, I have heard that with the battery grip installed, more current (amperage) is available, which can drive the focus motors faster and improve low light focusing speed. This aspect is not mentioned in the product description. Is this possible?Thank you,Mark
Unfortunately this is not the case. Battery grips are not designed to increase the autofocus speed nor will they do anything special to improve the performance in low light situations. At one point there were grips available for select cameras which would increase the frame rate of the camera, this was more typical in analog/film SLRs but there are a few DSLRs which had a grip option with a separate special battery for that purpose as well. However again this is not the case with the 6D and the BG-E13 grip. The BG-E13 grip will allow you to add a second LP-E6 battery (it can run off a single battery if you prefer). If you opt to use the second battery in the grip, the cameras performance will simply double. If you previously were able to take 200 shots on a full charge with the single battery without the grip, and then added the 2nd battery, you would then be able to extend your shoot to take a rough total of 400 images.
