Nikon RT-1 Overview

The RT-1 Tripod Mount Ring For 70-200mm f/4G Lens from Nikon is designed for the 70-200mm f/4G lens. The ring makes rotating your lens easier and the built-in tripod collar improves lens balance by screwing into the tripod mount.

Improves Lens Balance
The ring secures your lens to the camera's tripod
Thumbscrews Tighten And Loosen Ring
Having a thumbscrew control the ring makes it easy to adjust the tripod ring on the go
Gives Your Camera Setup Better Balance
The ring adds stability to your camera and lens. Due to its weight, when the lens is mounted with a camera on a tripod, the center of gravity is shifted to the lens. The ring attaches to the tripod and can be shifted to any position on the lens, ensuring the weight is evenly distributed
Rotation
Having the camera secured with a ring around the lens makes it possible to rotate the lens between landscape and portrait modes without removing the camera from the tripod. The position of the camera distinguishes portrait or landscape mode, not the position of the lens. The friction thumbscrews can then be tightened to secure the camera in the desired position. When not needed, the ring can be rotated to an out of the way position
Hinged Design
The hinge provides the ability to keep the lens attached to the camera while disconnecting the lens from the tripod

I bought this for both my 70-200 F4 and my 300 PF. It does the job nice with typical Nikon quality.

Somewhat dissapointed

I purchased this mount ring because I was concerned about too much weight on the lens mount. After using it the last month or so, it has more play in the ring than I would like. I of course make certain I have tightened the knob to the max.

Is the RT=1 compatable with the older Nikon 300mm - f/4.5 AIS lens? Thanks.
Asked by: James
Increasingly there is interest in using tripod collars for lenses they were not designed for. Recommending tripod collars would depend knowing the inner diameters of the of the collars and the outer diameters of the lenses. Unfortunately, the manufacturers list neither and until some one does a study we are left with opinions only. I own the older Nikkor lens and I would say that it is unlikely this collar is the right size and suggest looking in the second hand market.
