  • Auray Universal Microphone Pistol Grip

The Auray Universal Microphone Pistol Grip is a handheld grip that features an ergonomic cushioned handle. This grip is great in "run & gun" situations in which a boom pole would be cumbersome, and in video scenarios in which the cameraman is also responsible for audio recording. The grip can be held with one hand, as opposed to a boom pole which requires two. It also provides the option of being able to record audio from a different direction than the camera is pointing, an advantage over camera mounting the mic. Furthermore, having the mic mounted off the camera prevents it from picking up motor noise from the lens focusing.

In addition, the grip features standard 3/8" threads on both ends. This allows you to attach your shotgun mic (with shockmount) to one end of the grip and mount the other end to a boom pole. This gives you the flexibility of being able to quickly detach the pistol grip and the attached shotgun mic from the boom, an option that can come in handy for entering areas that are too small for a boom pole.

  • Ty Ford Audio & Video Book: Audio Bootcamp Field Guide 4th Edition by Ty Ford

Audio Bootcamp Field Guide - After answering thousands of online questions from videographers about how to capture better sound on video shoots, studio and location audio pro Ty Ford wrote "Ty Ford's Audio Bootcamp Field Guide." Readers are initially surprised by how small the book is, but find that there are no wasted words and that all of them make sense to the average human; no electronic formulas to memorize, no discussions about wavelengths, calculus, trigonometry or physics required.

Boom, lav and handheld mics are discussed. A section on mic patterns and their strengths and weaknesses help you choose which mic is best for a particular shot. The Mixer section explains why a mixer can make your audio sound better and how to connect everything to help you get better production sound rather than spending time in post trying to fix problem audio.

A Q&A chapter takes you through the thought processes required to make good decisions about how to get the best audio you can, regardless of the setup.

The Good Gear Guide is an up to date list of solid location audio gear. The Equipment Rental Guide is a list of qualified professional equipment rental houses in the US, in case you need to rent audio gear you don't have. Heavy-duty plastic covers insure the book will survive in a run bag. Spiral binding allows the book to remain open to the page you want without having to hold it.

The Anti-Panic Checklist on the back cover helps you through those anxious moments when you know some thing's wrong, but you're not sure where to look. In a companion online video tutorial, Ty Ford demonstrates the differences in ear-worn, lav, supercardioid and shotgun mics. You hear what the mics sound like as they are being used with an on-going narrative that explains what you're hearing and which mics work best in different situations.

Rode NTG3 reviews

Rode NTG3 Basic Shotgun Mic Kit (Black) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from high class audio at low cost The rode NT3 shotgun is a worthwhile high class location microphone that really does a great job. It has an ever so slightly wider pick up pattern than a Sennhieser 416 shotgun, but that's a good thing, as you don't have to swing as much between talent. Considering the cost, it's a great buy for broadcast spec audio. Rode also has a 10 year warranty, and an excellent standard of finish. The only small issue is it is it will not run into the Lectrosonics buttplug transmitter, as I am told it draws slightly to much current. Testing it beside a Sennhieser 416 and MKH 60 revealed the same quality punchy definition in the voice, and a rich bottom end.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great quality, would recommend! I ordered this kit, nervous about the quality and researched a great deal. I watched reviews of the NTG3 mic online and the quality was continually talked about as one of the best microphones in the field.I received the package in a week and must say I was happy with everything being so beautifully packaged, clean and protected. The boom pole itself came with two different cords that work for different lengths, as well as two filters for the shotgun mic. The audio from the NTG3 is crisp and professional indoors and outdoors. The only disclaimer I would give anyone thinking of ordering this kit is that it comes with XLR cords therefore, it is impossible to use unless you have a handyrecorder. In order to record your audio with any of the equipment in this kit, you will need something to plug your actual mic into...I would recommend something from the ZOOM series (Zoom H5, H6). Most people spending this kind of money on a mic know this, but just trying to help out anyone who might think this is a simple 'plug into camera' situation. It is next-level and requires extra care and caution when handling. If you're on the fence about this purchase, I would seriously praise the quality of the entire kit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a lovely microphone I have been using the Rode NTG2 for the past few years with acceptable results. I just purchased the NTG3 and have tested it and used it on one official shoot and have to say I am blown away by the quality. Everything sounds so rich and beautiful. I am excited to continue to use it for years to come. I know it'll transform our audio quality on our shoots.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from NTG-3 Died during a shoot I work as a professional audio mixer for reality TV, film and documentary. The staples of my work are the MKH 416 and MKH 60, but I have also used Scheops and the MKH 50 and MKH 70's as well. After reading a few reviews of the NTG-3 and how it is comparable to the MKH-416, I recommended my audio supervisor pal check it out. He purchased a couple for a casting shoot involving dialog and live musical performance. During the 2nd day of our shoot, we had full bands (guitar, bass, keys, drums and a vocal section) performing at SIR studios in New York. Due to the high SPL of this set up, I and the other mixer decided to point our booms toward the sound proof ceiling to catch a bit of the reflected sound (for reference as the performances were being sent to multitrack). This was the quietest signal we could get. About 2 hours into the shoot, my NTG-3 started cutting out a bit. Within an hour the NTG-3 was dead. I've had similar shoots with the 416 and never had this problem. The other mixer's NTG-3 made it through, which makes me wonder if it was a manufacturing defect verses a defect in the design. The NTG-3 sounded fine up to that point and I haven't followed up with my supervisor friend to see if Rode has replaced or refunded him. It definitely makes me nervous about using one professionally again. You might have better luck picking up a 416 used for the same price as a new NTG-3 if you do sound for a living.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amazing, affordable and tough as nails! This microphone does the job super well with only one flaw, no onboard battery for phantom power but its an easy workaround as all my recorders provide phantom power but the battery life on the recorder is diminished using it this way, by no means a deal killer or a problem for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super nice! This mic so good! However, the bass is strong in the mic . Meaning you will hear deep voices a lot deeper. You might have to do some changes on set .So watch out for that. But other than that wow!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great stuff here! Although, only an amateur, I hear the difference immediately, in the use of a mike like this ... while I can't give professional advice, I can say that I like the resulting sound!
