RODE NTG3B Moisture-Resistant Shotgun Microphone (Black)

Capture broadcast-quality sound indoors or outside for your next indie film, TV shoot, or documentary project with the black Rode NTG3B moisture-resistant shotgun microphone. Professional-level features such as low-noise circuitry, upgraded immunity to radio-frequency interference, and minimal handling noise reduce the need to repair and restore audio in postproduction.

The NTG3B's high sensitivity allows it to produce strong output levels without having to apply extreme gain at your mic preamp. Sonically, the NTG3B delivers consistently clear sound due in part to its gentle rise in high frequencies and its rumble-reducing attenuation of low bass frequencies. Its switch- and dial-free design lets you set up quickly and focus on the sound instead of fiddling with various mic settings. The solid brass housing is both durable and lightweight, and its anti-glare finish prevents reflections in the shot.

Designed to Withstand Adverse Environmental Conditions
When your work takes you outdoors, you're bound to encounter humidity and condensation, which can cause many mics to fail. The NTG3B's RF bias technology makes it almost completely resistant to moisture, allowing you to reliably capture high-quality audio in normal and adverse environmental conditions. It also includes a weatherproof aluminum storage cylinder for maximum protection during travel.
Broadcast-Quality Sound
The NTG3B was engineered for broadcast-quality sound, enhanced immunity to RF (radio frequency) interference, and low handling noise. Plus, its balanced output allows longer cable runs than most camera-mount shotgun microphones.

The combination of the NTG3B's 10" long body and supercardioid polar pattern yields focused on-axis directionality with maximum rejection behind the mic. Its low self-noise of 13 dBA and highly sensitive condenser element communicate detailed audio unburdened by the hiss that plagues many low-cost microphones.
Phantom Powered
Thanks to its 3-pin XLR output and compliance with 44 to 52 VDC phantom power, the NTG3B is compatible with a variety of handheld audio recorders, field recorders, and mixer adapters, as well as built-in preamps on many camcorders and cinema cameras.
Ideal for Boompole Mounting
The NTG3B includes a mic clip for easy placement on a mic stand or boompole. Alternatively, mount the NTG3B in the Rode SMR-4 shockmount (available separately) to impede the transfer of vibrations between your boompole and the mic.
Windscreen Minimizes Wind Noise
The NTG3B has a foam windscreen to reduce unwanted wind noise from breezes, fans, heaters, and air conditioners. For maximum reduction of handling noise and wind noise in indoor or outdoor environments, consider the Rode Blimp furry windshield and shockmount suspension system (available separately).

Auray Universal Microphone Pistol Grip

The Auray Universal Microphone Pistol Grip is a handheld grip that features an ergonomic cushioned handle. This grip is great in "run & gun" situations in which a boom pole would be cumbersome, and in video scenarios in which the cameraman is also responsible for audio recording. The grip can be held with one hand, as opposed to a boom pole which requires two. It also provides the option of being able to record audio from a different direction than the camera is pointing, an advantage over camera mounting the mic. Furthermore, having the mic mounted off the camera prevents it from picking up motor noise from the lens focusing.

In addition, the grip features standard 3/8" threads on both ends. This allows you to attach your shotgun mic (with shockmount) to one end of the grip and mount the other end to a boom pole. This gives you the flexibility of being able to quickly detach the pistol grip and the attached shotgun mic from the boom, an option that can come in handy for entering areas that are too small for a boom pole.

Ty Ford Audio & Video Ty Ford's Audio Bootcamp Field Guide 4th Edition Paperback Book

Ty Ford's Audio Bootcamp Field Guide dispenses answers to thousands of online questions from videographers about how to capture better sound on video shoots, in the studio, and on location. Readers are initially surprised by how small the book is but find that there are no wasted words and that all of them make sense to the average human; no electronic formulas to memorize, no discussions about wavelengths, calculus, trigonometry, or physics required.

Boom, lav, and handheld mics are discussed. A section on mic patterns and their strengths and weaknesses help you choose which mic is best for a particular shot. The Mixer section explains why a mixer can make your audio sound better and how to connect everything to help you get better production sound rather than spending time in post trying to fix problem audio.

A Q&A chapter takes you through the thought processes required to make good decisions about how to get the best audio you can, regardless of the setup.

The Good Gear Guide is an up to date list of solid location audio gear. The Equipment Rental Guide is a list of qualified professional equipment rental houses in the US, in case you need to rent audio gear you don't have. Heavy-duty plastic covers insure the book will survive in a run bag. Spiral binding allows the book to remain open to the page you want without having to hold it.

The Anti-Panic Checklist on the back cover helps you through those anxious moments when you know something's wrong, but you're not sure where to look. In a companion online video tutorial, Ty Ford demonstrates the differences in ear-worn, lav, supercardioid, and shotgun mics. You hear what the mics sound like as they are being used with an ongoing narrative that explains what you're hearing and which mics work best in different situations.

I've only used this mic once since getting it and it did a great job. I like how sturdy it is and the metal case it comes with to keep it protected from the elements.

If I get the boom pole that comes with the basic kit here, what is the recommended boom stand I should get to use with it?
Asked by: Anonymous
You can use a basic model like the Auray Boom Pole Holder (B&H # AUBPH) or the BoomMate BPH Microphone Boom Pole Holder (B&H # BOBPH) together with a grip head such as the Impact 2.5" Diameter (B&H # IMKCP200).

question

What's the difference between the NTG3 & the NTG8? And which is better??
Asked by: Ryan
The NTG3 and NTG8 are similar in internal components and both offer great sound quality. The difference in the mics is the length of the interference tube. The NTG8 being a longer mic at 22 vs the NTG3 at 10 inches. The longer tube is directly related to the directionality in capture for use in applications where a tight pickup pattern or recording from a distance is required.

Is this Mic compatible with the Canon G40?
Asked by: Trey
Hello Trey, unfortunately, you need 48v phantom power to operate the NTG3. It doesn't appear the G40 provides that. I recommend the Rode NTG2 or 4+ as they have power in the microphone.

How does the NTG3 work as a handheld interview ...

How does the NTG3 work as a handheld interview mic out on the field?
Asked by: Anonymous
The short answer here is, not typically. I say this because the NTG3 is a very directional, supercardioid microphone. What this means is, it is designed more for isolating at various distances and not so much for direct, close audio. If you do use this microphone in tight you can also hear variations in the volume and sound. Handling noise would also be an issue.

I lost my mic foam , I was looking for something to help me with my room echo , any ideas
Asked by: Mohammed
For a replacement foam windscreen that will fit on the RODE NTG3B Shotgun Microphones, you can use the Auray WSF-2018 Foam Windscreen for Shotgun Microphones (B&H # AUWSF2018). To cut down on room echo, we offer a selection of acoustic treatments like absorption panels and enclosures. You may also be able to use a reflection filter, depending on how the mic will be used. Please feel free to contact us directly by phone or through live chat and we can help you to find the best options for your specific application.
