E3 2019: Microsoft Xbox Briefing Recap

At the Xbox E3 2019 Briefing, Microsoft showcased a huge lineup of 60 games for both console and PC, including 11 world premieres and 14 games from Xbox Game Studios. The company also shared news about Project Scarlett, which is its next-gen console, set to launch in 2020, along with Halo Infinite. Microsoft also announced that more than 30 games, including Gears 5, will premiere on Xbox Game Pass. You’ll also soon be able to stream games to your mobile device with Project xCloud soon. Read on to find out about the biggest reveals.

Project Scarlett

It was only a matter of time until we heard about Microsoft’s next-gen console. Now, six years after the original Xbox One’s release, Microsoft gave us a glimpse into the future. Codenamed Project Scarlett, Microsoft says its next-gen console will be powered by a custom-designed processor, using the latest Zen 2 and Radeon RDNA architecture from AMD. Paired with high-bandwidth GDDR6 memory and a next-gen solid state drive (SSD), Project Scarlett will provide developers the power they require to deliver an immersive gaming experience. Project Scarlett is expected to feature hardware accelerated raytracing, variable refresh rate, ultra-low latency input, and even 8K capability. Project Scarlett is expected to arrive Holiday 2020, alongside Halo Infinite.

Xbox in the Cloud

You’ll soon be able to stream games from your Xbox One console, starting with a preview this October. With console streaming, you will be able to access your Xbox One game library and Xbox Game Pass titles on a mobile device. E3 2019 attendees could test Project xCloud by streaming games like Halo 5: Guardians and Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice to smartphones and tablets. With Project xCloud, Microsoft wants to give gamers the freedom to play the games when and where they want.

Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2

Inspired by fan feedback, Microsoft revealed the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2. The Elite Series 2 will include 30 new and improved features, such as adjustable-tension thumbsticks, wraparound rubberized grips, shorter hair-trigger locks, and up to 40 hours of rechargeable battery life. The Elite Series 2 is available for preorder at $179.99 and will launch in 24 markets on November 4, 2019.

Halo Infinite

Teased at E3 2018, you can now anticipate the return of Master Chief in 2020 when Halo Infinite releases with Project Scarlett. Join the fan favorite Master Chief as he uncovers the mysteries surrounding the appearance of The Pilot and the desolate remains of a Halo ring. Halo Infinite will be powered by 343 Industries’ next-gen Slipspace Engine.

Cyberpunk 2077

Keanu Reeves made a surprise appearance at the Xbox E3 Briefing (and got called breathtaking in the process). He was there to introduce CD Projekt Red’s highly anticipated game, Cyberpunk 2077, which is an open-world, action-adventure story set in Night City, a megalopolis obsessed with power, glamour, and body modification. You play as V, a mercenary outlaw going after a one-in-a-kind implant that is the key to immortality. You will be able to customize your character’s cyberware, skill set, and play style. Explore a vast city where the choices you make shape the story and world around you. Keanu Reeves will also be in the game, supposedly, as Johny Silverhand. The game finally got a release date, so mark April 16, 2020 on your calendars.

Gears 5

Gears 5 will feature five modes, including Escape, an aggressive, high-stakes, three-player co-op mode featuring a suicide squad that must work together to take out enemy hives from within. Set for a September 10, 2019 release date, early access will be granted for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Plan members and Gears 5 Ultimate Edition owners, on September 6. Preorder or play with Xbox Game Pass by September 16 to get The Terminator Dark Fate Character Pack, which adds the Terminator T-800 Endoskeleton and Sarah Connor, from the upcoming film Terminator Dark Fate, as playable multiplayer characters.

Borderlands 3

Experience the return of the original looter shooter with Borderlands 3. With an enormous variety of guns to choose from, blast your way through new worlds and enemies as one of the four new Vault hunters, each with deep skill trees, abilities, and customization. Play solo or join with friends as you take on insane enemies, collect lots of loot, and save your home from ruthless cult leaders in the galaxy. Borderlands 3 will be released on September 13, 2019.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

Order 66 has been executed. You play as a young Padawan on the run who had to hide his abilities. Now, you must embrace them as you use the Force and your lightsaber to take on the Empire. Use the Force starting November 15, 2019.

Notable Mentions

Of course, the games mentioned above were only a few of the 60 games revealed in the two-hour long event. Microsoft announced that more than 30 PC games will be premiering with Xbox Game Pass for PC. Microsoft also announced that all forthcoming titles from Xbox Game Studios will premiere with Xbox Game Pass.

Microsoft said it’ll be releasing more news about Project Scarlett as we get closer to the Holiday 2020 launch date, so stay tuned.
