Novation is announcing new 4th-generation versions of its popular Lauchkey USB MIDI controllers featuring a complete top-panel redesign, lots of new elements and abilities, and—on the two largest models—updated keys. There are several variations to choose from, including two mini-key models (with your choice of 25 or 37 keys) and four full-size models, available with 25, 37, 49, and 61 keys.
The mini-key versions offer responsive synth-style key action, eight encoders, and 16 velocity-sensitive pads with polyphonic aftertouch that are terrific for triggering drums and launching clips. Unlike standard pads, each one features a unique, radial sensor that increases sensitivity and improves consistency for even tighter performances. They can also be set to trigger chords or individual notes with polyphonic aftertouch. Use the built-in arpeggiator to get grooves going quickly, or try one of three Chord Modes (Fixed Chord, User Chord, and Chord Maps) to easily create complex musical progressions. Composers will also appreciate the Scale Mode, which locks notes on the keyboard in the right key, and the Chord Detector which shows what chord is currently being played, with a visual representation on the OLED display. With both USB and 3.5mm MIDI connections, it’s easy to connect a Launchkey to your DAW or hardware sound source. And while the Launchkey default assignments are a terrific way to get started immediately, using the Components software allows you to customize the controls to behave exactly the way you want with your software or hardware setup.
If you prefer full-size synth-action keys, and only need a couple of octaves, you can step up to either the 25-key or 37-key versions which offer the same terrific features from the minis, just with larger keys. If you’re looking for a more expressive playing experience, the 49- and 61-key models offer semi-weighted waterfall-style piano keys, with individual coil springs on each key for a smoother, more consistent key-down feel—a major upgrade for the Launchkey series.
Regardless of which model you choose, all Lauchkey controllers come with a comprehensive software package that includes Ableton Live Lite DAW, along with plug-in instruments and processors from leading software manufacturers, such as GForce, Orchestral Tools, Klevgrand, and Melodics.
