FUJIFILM has long made a name for itself among its users by offering substantial firmware updates to its cameras that add new features and unlock unrealized potential. It looks like the entire medium format GFX lineup is up next. Today, FUJIFILM released major upgrades for the GFX 50S and GFX 50R, as well as the GFX 100—which deserves a special mention for adding raw video output for ProRes RAW with compatible Atomos recorders.
4K Raw Video Output for the GFX 100
Headlining all these upgrades is the addition of raw video output via HDMI for the GFX 100. This camera already made waves for its impressive video chops, especially considering its medium format sensor. Now, with firmware Ver. 2.00, the GFX 100 can produce a UHD 4K raw video at up to 30p via HDMI that can be captured by a compatible recorder. Specifically, you’ll want to use an Atomos recorder, such as the Ninja V, to record the raw data as a ProRes RAW file.
This new raw option is in addition to DCI and UHD 4K recording at up to 30p internally at 100, 200, or 400 Mb/s. Considering the large 44 x 33mm sensor, in-body image stabilization, log gamma profiles, and more, this will make the GFX 100 a compelling option for filmmakers. It is also possible to use this system on gimbals or handheld. Adding to this, select gimbals will now be able to control some settings on the camera, such as exposure or manual focus, using remote controls and the USB connection.
Expanded Image Processing and Improved AF for All GFX Systems
Film Simulations have long been a distinct feature of FUJIFILM cameras. Each release seems to come with new options. This time, all three GFX cameras will be receiving CLASSIC Neg. ETERNA mode is coming to the GFX 50S and 50R, while ETERNA Bleach Bypass is finding its way to the GFX 100. Additionally, the Smooth Skin Effect will be offered on the GFX 50S and 50R and Color Chrome Blue will be available on the GFX 100.
For the GFX 100 and its phase-detect AF system, users will benefit from faster and more accurate performance in low-light conditions down to -5 EV. Also, a new Low Light Priority AF-S mode will help enhance performance of AF in the GFX 50S and 50R. Face/Eye AF will also receive a boost for all three models, and a new Auto mode has been added to focus bracketing. This allows users to determine start and end points and the interval, and then let the camera take over to determine the number of frames and steps.
Other Changes
Other smaller changes will help improve the overall usability of the system. Among these changes is the ability to adjust exposure settings from a computer with compatible tethered shooting applications. Also, the in-camera rating system is now able to be read in a wider range of photo-editing applications, and the GFX 50S and 50R can now save up to 9,999 photos in each folder, up from 999.
