Beefing up its premium X-series lineup, Fujifilm has just announced a super compact XF 35mm f/2 R WR lens, along with the XF 1.4x WR Teleconverter for the XF 50-140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR and select future lenses. This adds a lightweight normal lens to the series, as well as improves the versatility of Fujifilm’s current and future telephoto zooms.
With an angle of view similar to that of the human eye, the XF 35mm f/2 R WR lens and its 53mm equivalent focal length offer X-mount shooters a very natural perspective during shooting. Along with the fast maximum aperture of f/2 and 9-blade diaphragm, users will be able to work easily in both low light and normal conditions and create images with excellent control over depth of field. The lens also features a weather-resistant design with eight sealed points for operation in less-than-ideal conditions and temperatures as low as 14°F.
The compact size is thanks to a 9 element in 6 group design that includes two aspherical and two ED glass elements that minimize distortion, improve contrast, and reduce chromatic aberrations. A Nano-GI coating further improves image quality by limiting the impact of ghosting and flare. Operation is excellent, as well, with the internal focusing system that can lock focus nearly silently in just 0.08 seconds and as close as 13". Additionally, it has a physical aperture ring with 1/3 EV steps when manual control is desired. The XF 35mm f/2 lens is available in black or silver.
Moving into the telephoto realm, Fujifilm’s XF 1.4x WR Teleconverter will multiply the focal length of the XF 50-140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR lens by 1.4x, providing a focal length of 70-200mm, which is a 35mm equivalent length of 105-300mm on Fuji’s APS-C sensor. This causes the lens to lose one stop of light. The teleconverter features a 7-element-in-3-group design that will ensure the optimum optical performance. Also, it is weather sealed to maintain resistance to dust and water during use. It will also retain the same AF performance as the original lens and transmit information reflecting the change in aperture and focal length. Additionally, it will be compatible with select future lenses, such as the upcoming XF 100-400mm lens.
