Leica is completing its trio of L-Mount f/2.8 zooms with today’s announcement of the Vario-Elmarit-SL 70-200mm f/2.8 ASPH. The 70-200mm lens is a versatile zoom with a bright constant f/2.8 maximum aperture, making it ideal portraiture, events, and sports photographers,. Alongside the new telephoto zoom, Leica is also announcing the Extender L 2.0x teleconverter, which joins the existing 1.4x model as a simple way to increase the reach of the new 70-200mm as well as Leica’s 100-400mm f/5-6.3 zoom.

Joining the Super-Vario-Elmarit-SL 14-24mm f/2.8 ASPH. ultra-wide and Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-70mm f/2.8 ASPH. standard zoom, the new Vario-Elmarit-SL 70-200mm f/2.8 ASPH. Completes Leica’s trio of zooms covering 14mm to 200mm with a consistently bright design. Spanning portrait to medium-telephoto focal lengths, this lens is perfectly positioned for portrait, event, sports, and even some wildlife shooting, and is benefitted by a 3.5-stop image stabilization system that reduces the effects of shake when shooting handheld.
Like the other zooms in this trio, the new lens features a similarly durable build, with weather sealing on the lens body and an AquaDura coating on the exposed elements to repel dust and moisture and make the lens surface easier to clean. Optically, the lens also includes a trio of aspherical elements that contribute to high sharpness and low distortion throughout the zoom range.
Along with being a workhorse for photographers, this lens is also being positioned as a viable telephoto zoom option for videographers, thanks to its quick and quiet autofocus performance and internal focusing design. Also, physically, the lens comes with a removable tripod foot for balanced mounting and the lens has a relatively compact and lightweight profile, measuring 8.1” long, accepting 82mm threaded filters, and weighing 3.4 lb.
Extender L 2.0x
Announced alongside the 70-200mm f/2.8, the Extender L 2.0x is the second L-mount teleconverter from Leica, joining the Extender L 1.4x. This 2x teleconverter essentially doubles the focal length of compatible lenses, for example, turning the 70-200mm f/2.8 into an effective 140-400mm f/5.6. It’s compatible with both the new 70-200mm f/2.8 and the Vario-Elmar-SL 100-400mm f/5-6.3, and is a smaller, more portable alternative than adding an entire second lens to your kit. Also, it has matching weather sealing as the original lenses, for working in inclement conditions, and supports full metadata, AF, and exposure transfer between the camera and lens for seamless use.
