Despite their pleasing aesthetics, vintage-style headphones rarely offer quality sound or durable build. Music is often muffled and indistinct. The headphones are typically made with cheap plastic and foam pads that either refuse to stay attached or will disintegrate at the first hint of moisture. In other words, most retro headphones are all style, no substance.
However, there are exceptions to this style-over-substance rule, many of which come from renowned headphones manufacturer Koss. Today we’ll be looking at some of Koss’s most famous retro models, focusing on their impressive sound quality, excellent value, and of course, their incredible design.
Koss Goes Way Back
Established in 1958 by John C. Koss, the Koss Corporation has been delivering high-quality audio to the masses for more than 60 years. During its run, the brand also earned its reputation as a leader in the professional headphones space. In the sixties, stars like Tony Bennet and Frank Sinatra Jr. wore the latest models of Koss headphones. By 1969, even Nixon’s Air Force One was decked out with Koss Pro/4 units for the entire staff and press to enjoy. In 1984, following the release of the now-famous Porta Pro headphones, Koss was one of the headphone manufacturers setting the standard for sound quality and comfort, putting them on equal footing as world-famous brands like Sennheiser and Sony.

But curiously, while most popular headphone companies started introducing more modern physical designs, Koss chose to retain the classic look of its most popular headphones. Even now, most modern Koss headphones appear charmingly outdated. And perhaps that’s with proud intention.
The Koss Porta Pro
Koss’s Porta Pro headphones have always been a huge seller, and thanks to a recent resurgence in demand, the popularity of the Porta Pro has expanded beyond its original cult following to a more diverse crowd of budget-conscious consumers who appreciate great sound and aesthetically appealing design.
Iconic Design
You can spot the Porta Pro from a mile away. In fact, it’s probably one of the most recognizable headphones ever made. Although you can now buy it in various colors, the classic model is defined by its silver metal headband, quirky head pads with adjustable clamping settings, and silver earcups with exposed blue driver housing.

Sound Quality
Even seasoned audiophiles will admit that the Porta Pro sounds pretty darn good. With a punchy and well-controlled bass, tastefully present midrange, and detailed yet forgiving highs, the Porta Pro’s sound signature is a definite crowd-pleaser. They can get loud too. The open-back design broadens and adds impressive dimension to the soundstage, while the drivers ensure accuracy and minimal distortion. which feature which is impressive for such a modest set of cans.
Value
You would be hard-pressed to find a pair of open-back headphones that sound as good as the Porta Pro and cost less than 50 bucks. Not only are they wildly affordable, they’re also free to replace thanks to Koss’s generous lifetime warranty. Hopefully, you’ll never have to use that warranty, but considering the Porta Pro’s somewhat-delicate design, it’s nice to have just in case.
Portability
As the name suggests, the Porta Pro headphones are super portable. They feature a foldable design that allows them to be easily stored when they’re not on your head. Speaking of portability and listening to music on the go, the Porta Pro’s open-back design will allow you to stay aware of the outside environment. This may be bad news for subway commuters, but if you like that open-space feel, the Porta Pro is one of the few great ambient-aware headphones designed for on-the-go use.

Notable Mentions
As iconic as the Porta Pros are, they’re not the only noteworthy headphones in Koss’s catalog.
Koss KSC75
If you want to ditch the headband altogether, Koss’s popular KSC75 headphones feature a clip-on design and solid sound quality. With a fast yet moderate bass, well-balanced midrange, and crisp highs, KSC75’s sound signature is ideal for those who like a lighter and brighter sound.
The KPH Series
If you’re on a super-tight budget but still want to get that signature Koss look, consider the KPH7 headphones. They can’t match the sound quality of either the Porta Pros or the KSC75 cans, but the retro look is undeniably charming. Available in fun colors like red, purple, and lime green, these cans will definitely scratch your aesthetic itch. Heck, you don’t even have to use them to listen to music—just wear them as earmuffs.
