Designed for the "run-and-gun" video creators, Zoom has announced the F1 Field Recorder, its latest solution for capturing professional-quality audio for video in a stealth-like form factor. The F1 is compatible with all Zoom microphone capsules and is shipping, initially, with either the shotgun microphone or a lavalier microphone. This tiny field recorder offers several essential features for videographers, including a tone generator for setting levels, sound markers for aligning audio and video, an on-board limiter to keep your levels in check when loud spikes in volume occur, and a Rec Hold function to avoid accidental operation of buttons.
The F1 is a two-channel recorder with a 1.25" monochrome LCD screen that supports up to 24-bit/96 kHz audio in BWF-compliant WAV or a variety of MP3 formats. There is a stereo 1/8" mic/line input with plug-in power (2.5V) and an 1/8" stereo phone/line output jack with a dedicated volume control. The audio is recorded directly to a micro SD and SDHC card (up to 32GB). A micro-USB port is available for data exchange to and from a computer, as well as for use as an audio interface with a computer or iOS device. The F1 utilizes two standard AAA alkaline, Lithium, or NiMH rechargeable batteries, or an AC adapter (AD-17), and offers a run time of up to 10 hours.
The F1 Field Recorder + Shotgun Mic includes the SGH-6 shotgun microphone, which is designed to capture professional-quality audio with hyper directional sound. The packaging also includes a shock mount, windscreen, stereo mini cable for DSLR, and two AAA batteries. The shotgun mic easily snaps to the F1, which is mounted on a camera via the shock mount. This system is designed to replace the sub-par microphone found on most DSLR cameras.
The F1 Field Recorder + Lavalier Mic includes the LMF-1 lavalier microphone, which is designed to capture professional-quality audio from the source and is well suited for interviews, wedding vows, ENG, and more. The package also includes a mic clip, a belt clip, a windscreen, and two AAA batteries. The lavalier connects to the F1's 1/8" connector, while the belt clip and mic clip help secure the entire system out of view.

Cool idea but why would you put the screen and controls on the top which is often times hard to see/access when you have your camera mounted on a tripod?
