If you’ve been thinking about updating your multitrack field recorder to a unit with 32-bit float recording, then Zoom’s new F8n Pro needs to be on your shortlist. This Pro model updates and replaces the popular F8n recorder and now offers two separate analog-to-digital converters, one that handles the high gain settings, and the other taking over for low gain settings. In the real world, this kind of high-resolution recording means you don’t have to worry about setting recording levels―there’s so much available headroom, clipping is impossible.
With its 8 Neutrik XLR/TRS combo inputs, 10-track recording capabilities, and timecode support, the Zoom F8n has been a proven performer for a wide range of film and video makers and many other content creators. With its updated converters, the F8n Pro still supports sample rates up to 192 kHz (at resolutions up to 32-bit), but the headroom provided by the new dual A/D converters eliminates overloading worries and supplies you with ultra-low-noise recordings that won’t deteriorate even when normalized. What’s more, the unit’s 32-bit floating-point recording capabilities can be leveraged for use as an 8-input / 4-output USB audio interface for your computer.
All the features of the original F8n are on board, including high-grade preamps with up 75 dB of gain, capable of handling a wide range of microphones. Of course, the unit retains the Zoom mic capsule option, allowing you to swap out inputs 1 and 2 with one of Zoom’s separately available mic modules, including mid-side, X/Y, and shotgun capsules. The versatile F8n Pro even offers an Ambisonic mode that supports 360° capture from compatible VR microphones. Dual SD card slots allow for long shoots, even at high resolution.
Redundant recording, precision timecode and synchronization features, headphone and balanced outputs, AutoMix ambient sound reduction, and a slew of other features are sure to satisfy even the most demanding creative professionals. A backlit color LCD makes it easy to see in any lighting, while remote control is available via the Zoom F-Control (available separately) or the F8 control app for your mobile device. The F8n Pro will run on eight (8) AA batteries or can be powered by a DC battery pack through the unit’s Hirose connector. The unit can also be powered via a wall outlet using the supplied 12V adapter.

With its new dual converters and 32-bit float capabilities, the new Zoom F8n Pro raises the bar even higher in the portable multitrack recorder line up. Can you see it serving as your field recorder? Let us know in the Comments section, below!
