Best Beginner Drone Overall: Potensic ATOM 2
The best beginner drone for most people
The ATOM 2 is the best beginner drone for most people. Potensic’s follow-up effort to the drone of the same name, the ATOM 2 improves upon nearly every aspect of its predecessor, while somehow managing to maintain a price that’s still relatively affordable.
Good beginner drones are designed with first-time flyers in mind. They’re meant to be accessible and easy to use. The ATOM 2 is both of those things. It’s incredibly easy to fly and super responsive; it even performs well in windy conditions, alleviating the unease many beginner pilots feel when flying in the elements.
What elevates the ATOM 2 from merely a “good” beginner drone to arguably the best is its impressive (and somewhat unprecedented) cache of advanced features, which includes a very capable gimbal-stabilized camera system, AI subject tracking, intelligent video modes, and much more.
Considering its ease of use, robust performance, and extensive feature set (not to mention its affordable cost), it’s easy to see why the ATOM 2 is such an appealing option for beginner pilots.

Best Beginner Photography Drone: DJI Mini 5 Pro
The best beginner drone for capturing aerial images
Featuring one of the biggest camera sensors ever put into a sub-250g flyer, the DJI Mini 5 Pro is the best beginner drone for capturing aerial imagery. This photo- and first-time-friendly flyer utilizes a powerful 1-inch CMOS sensor capable of capturing 50MP stills and up to 4K120 video.
Bolstering the Mini 5 Pro’s powerful new sensor are several features designed to enhance the camera’s capabilities, including an upgraded gimbal that supports 225 degrees of rotation, a new 48mm Med-Tele mode (great for portrait optimization), a large suite of photo-friendly tracking modes (such as ActiveTrack 360), and much more.
On top of all that, the Mini 5 Pro also offers 42GB of built-in storage (great for storing all of your high-res stills and video) and OcuSync 4+ video transmission, which can transmit 10-bit video up to 12.4 miles away. The Mini 5 Pro also boasts an impressive 36-minute flight time, giving you plenty of time to capture lots of breathtaking imagery.

Best Beginner FPV Drone: EMAX Tinyhawk III
The best FPV drone for first-time flyers
If you're new to first-person view (FPV) flying, the Tinyhawk III is a great place to start. EMAX’s beginner-friendly flyer is designed to make the somewhat intimidating world of FPV flying more accessible by providing an easy-to-fly solution that's ready to fly right out of the box.
Conventional FPV systems include three essential components: a camera drone, an RC controller, and FPV goggles (or headset). With the Tinyhawk III, all of these components together in a ready-to-fly combo that includes the Tinyhawk III drone, an EMAX E8 controller, and a pair of T2 FPV goggles.
Reminiscent of the classic "Tiny Whoop" design, the palm-sized Tinyhawk III features a small yet durable frame that’s designed to withstand collisions and other high-impact situations—which are relatively common to FPV flight.
For a complete FPV experience, you’ll need to pair the Tinyhawk III with a compatible FPV headset (such as the goggles and headset that come with Tinyhawk III RTF combo). If you opt to purchase the components separately, make sure to check that they’re compatible before you buy.

Best Value Beginner Drone: DJI Neo 2
The best bang for your buck
Featuring all of the hallmarks of a great beginner drone—plus, a few that punch well above its weight class—the DJI Neo 2 gives first-time flyers the best bang for their buck.
Despite being cheaper than the standard kit version of the ATOM 2, DJI’s new Neo 2 drone offers a ton of impressive features that rival (and in some cases surpass) Potensic’s top-rated flyer. Key highlights include the ability to capture high-quality stills and 4K video at up to 100 fps. It also boasts a solid 19-minute flight time, 49GB of built-in storage, high-speed subject tracking, voice and gesture control functionality, and much more.
It's worth mentioning that while the Neo 2 is technically cheaper than the ATOM 2, it doesn’t come with a controller (the ATOM 2 does). That’s not a big deal, since the Neo 2 can be controlled via your smartphone and/or voice/gesture controls, but it does give some context why it costs less than the standard kit ATOM 2.
However, even if you factor in the higher cost of the Fly More Combo version of the Neo 2, which includes a controller and three flight batteries (the standard version only comes with one), we still think you’re getting tremendous value back on your investment.
