Unveiled: SmallHD 701/702 LITE On-Camera Monitors Plus AC7-OLED Canon Kit

Though to the uninitiated eye they might look like 7” tablets, these are really professional video production tools. The 701 LITE and 702 LITE together represent the latest from acclaimed field monitor maker SmallHD. Don’t let their sizes fool you, these are rugged beasts housed in rubberized aluminum. In the RAW and Log era you don’t want to just use a field monitor for framing, focus, and exposure. You want a reasonably accurate impression of what the final, graded image will look like on the Big Screen. To this end, both monitors feature the ability to load 3D LUTs via an SD card.

Users familiar with SmallHD will appreciate the inclusion of their highly customizable monitor OS, Page Builder. This software lets you create up to 12 pages, each with the exact set of functions you want for fast access in the heat of production.  Some of the features you might add to a page include several focus assist functions. These include focus peaking and Joystick Zoom, the latter allowing you to hone in on the region of the picture you wish to inspect. Other staple analysis tools include Waveform, False Color, and, for video traditionalists, Zebra.

The panels in both have a resolution of 1200 x 800 and feature IPS for superb off-axis viewing. They will accept input signals in a range of frame rates and resolutions up to 1080p60 over HDMI. The 701 LITE is HDMI input only, while the 702 LITE also includes HD-SDI, supporting resolutions up to 1080p30.

As you would expect for monitors targeting the DSLR and compact cinema camera market, both will power from either Canon LP-E6 style or Sony NPF (“L-Series”) style batteries.

In other news, SmallHD are offering a Canon Kit that includes the HDMI version of the AC7-OLED. A similar kit has been out a few months already for their AC7-OLED SDI version. This bundle combines the high performance of a 7.7” 1280 x 800 resolution monitor with a number of essential accessories. To dress the screen itself, you will find a sun hood as well as two screen protectors. A StrongArm 7 articulating mounting arm is thrown in for all of those awkward setups where direct on-camera mounting is untenable. Slimmed-down, short USB and HDMI cables are provided because the last thing you need is a stiff, over-long cable ruining your day. To expand your powering options, there is an LP-E6 / NPF hybrid battery plate as well as a “universal” battery plate, the latter allowing you to attach third-party plates such Anton Bauer or IDX.  Finally, there is a cleaning cloth to keep everything as shiny as the day you bought it.

Hi Bhupesh -

These monitors will connect to the Leica Q series, but the Leica M240 offers no HDMI  output.
