Celestron 80AZ Overview

The PowerSeeker 80AZ 80mm f/5 AZ Refractor Telescope from Celestron is designed as an entry-level telescope for wide-field viewing of bright deep space objects, planets, and the moon. Its 80mm objective lens and 400mm focal length give it respectable light gathering and magnification potential, while keeping the size and weight manageable. The manual alt-azimuth mount and 5x24 finderscope makes finding objects as easy as point-and-aim.

The scope comes with an eyepiece that produces a magnification 20x, and the 1.25" rack-and-pinion focuser will accept any optional 1.25" eyepiece or accessory. For comfortable astronomical viewing, or to use it as a spotting scope, there is an included 90° erect-image diagonal to correctly orientate the subject horizontally and vertically in the field of view. To aid in terrestrial viewing, the mount has an altitude locking bar that holds the scope in place allowing you to more easily track subjects as they move. The aluminum tripod has independently adjustable legs for precise leveling on uneven terrain, and comes with a removable accessory tray.

Celestron 80AZ Reviews

Great Starter Telescope

Ashamed to admit it, but up until recent I have never taken a glance at the moon or night sky with anything other than my subpar eyes; however, that all changed once I glared upon the waxing gibbous with a pair of 10x50 binoculars. From that first glance I knew I needed to buy a decent entry-level telescope. Enter the Celestron Powerseeker 80azs... Pros: wide diameter objective lens with clear optics; tripod and alt-az yoke mount are decently stable; easy to assemble; lightweight and portable; affordable (permitted me the additional funds for more eyepieces); Yoke mount is metal construction Cons: included finder scope is pretty terrible, but was replaced on the cheap with a $20 red dot finder; the alt-az mount only has up/down slow motion controls; included 3x Barlow is overkill and doesn't function well within this scope's limits I have been in possession of my 80azs for a little over two weeks now and I must say that overall I am rather impressed with the value of the telescope and it's included accessories. They are by no means "professional-grade", but they are certainly not "hobby killers" as most astronomy forums tote about telescopes in this price range. The important factor is to not over exaggerate this scope's intended use. My intended use is primarily for observing the lunar surface, star clusters, distant views of Jupiter and Saturn, and terrestrial viewing. Overall I'm a happy newbie and look forward to getting out under the stars more often.

A GREAT STARTER

Bought this Celestron as a starter into astronomy. The telescope is full manual so expect to learn how to navigate before starting. The build quality and visual acuity is great for the price. B&H shipped promptly and it arrived in great condition.

question

is this a spotting scope that can be used for bird watching?
Asked by: Anonymous
I really don't recommend using this for Bird Watching. This is really more so for Celestial use. This would work, but might be inconvenience with 1 fixed focal length eyepiece. I would recommend going with the Celestron Ultima 80 3.1 /80mm Spotting Scope Kit. Website link: https://bhpho.to/2jl9m8N

question

Can the altaz base be removed from the tripod , and can I used another photo tripod with it; one that has 3/8-16 screw on top?
Asked by: Anonymous
For the Powerseeker 80AZ the base is not designed to be removed from the Tripod. It voids any warranty.

Unfortunately they do not make this scope with an EQ mount. The most similar option with an EQ mount would be this version: https://bhpho.to/2qEfmBL
