Manfrotto Compact Advanced Tripod Reviews

Use it is for what it is!

I have 15 of these for our College Photo program, purchased to fit in a collection of gear sent home with Advanced students during the Covid Isolation for Tabletop shooting. It is a lightweight, compact tripod with 3-way adjustability and does what that sort of tripod does. I ordered them out of need, untested, and crossed my fingers. However, the Compact Advanced Aluminum Tripod is a Manfrotto. Upon return to Face-to-face they have most frequently been used by our Entry-level shooters with Rebel-type cameras. We shoot on as many as 8 sets at a time. Their small footprint and light weight make movement around the studio easy. Long lenses demand thoughtful set-up. Fast and heavy fixed focal length zooms are used on larger tripods at about $300 each. 4 1/2 semesters of use by hundreds of students have revealed no failure, as used within design capabilities. Leg locks, center binder, and head adjustment levers have a nice tension. They are strong and solid, sharing the same quick-release bracket with all of our other Manfrotto tripods. Once set, the camera stays where you put it. I like the bags they come in as we stack them like firewood on a cart for storage, transportation, and distribution for shoots. Criticisms? Shooters new to tripods will reveal weak points. The unfolding and folding of the levers for storage and use is not intuitive and a bit fussy. Yet, it is that design that makes it store so much better than any tripod I have ever used. Legs do not operate as smoothly as many other tripods and that takes a bit more attention with set-up. This is a light, compact, and inexpensive piece of gear that is worth every penny. If you need smoother operation, a bubble level, or a different type of heads' functionality, don't whine, spend more money for what you need. I am buying 5 more Manfrotto Advanced Compact Tripods.

This tripod is made with the same dependable reliability I expect from Manfrotto. It's construction is pretty solid, and the dual head is easy to use. I love the compactness and light weight of this tripod, so bringing it along on your travels is convenient, especially since it comes with its own carrying case! As a wedding photographer who hardly ever uses a tripod for work, I can rely on this tripod in case I ever need it for long exposure shots. For personal, casual use, it's great as well. This gets the job done for a good price!

Great so far.

I don't use a tripod much, but I used it for a three hour indoor session recently. Satisfied. Seems good quality.

Poor quality design

The pan and tilt handles always interfere with each other...very cumbersome to use. Waste of time to have to rotate cw and ccw. Never really felt like this tripod was totally sturdy...often times I would get some drift and play in the head. Eventually the handles clamp broke at the head from torquing on the handles. Got six years of moderate use out of this tripod before it broke, but like I never felt like a quality, stable system.

I have purchased a number of tripods over the last 20 years. I happen to have two of these and use them primarily for frd ax 100 Sony (small) video cameras. What is really great about this tripod is that it is very tall and remarkably stable but small and lightweight packed up. In a pinch I also can use this tripod for the bigger pxw Z150 Sony. Nicely made. Great product at a great price.

This tripod is very light and small when folded down, yet it is still quite sturdy. It will work very well along with my compact spotting scope!

I'm looking at using this with a Nikon d5500 + 70-300vr lens. Would this be the one to get or would the compact action be ok?
Asked by: Chris H.
Always look at the weight the tripod will old and the weight of your camera with its heavest lens. In most cases all APS-Cs with wide angles and zooms, like 24-85... Will all work on almost any full sized tri-pod.

Is this arca compatible?

Is this arca compatible?
Asked by: Anna
No, it uses it own kind of quick release system (the plate replacement is Manfrotto 200LT-PL), not arca compatible. It's possible to replace the head with one that is, but, at this point, you should be looking into buying a separate tripod, head (arca compatible) and assembling - not worth to buy a complete tripod kit like this.
