Raya OC-OF7 Overview

  • 1Description

The Raya Octa Fluorescent 7-Socket Fixture 2-Light Softbox Kit was put together by B&H to provide a soft, multi-use, continuous lighting setup with enough power and coverage for single subjects as well as large groups and sets. The kit is comprised of two 7-socket fixtures with 26W spiral fluorescent lamps, two 32" Octa softboxes, and an air-cushioned 9.5" light stand for each light.

The two Octa 7-socket units have dual rocker switches on their back panels, each of which control on/off function for 3 or 4 lamps allowing the creation of a light ratio. The Octas have multi-voltage power supplies for worldwide use (with optional adapter plug) and a standard 5/8" receiver for light stands and accessories.

The included 32" softboxes feature highly reflective, pebbled interiors and removable front faces that attach with simple touch-fasteners. They also have detachable interior clip-on diffusers for softer light if desired. In use, the Octas render the signature wrap-around look that the modifiers' shape is well known for, as well as natural circular catch-lights in your subject's eyes. The light sources are supported by the included air-cushioned stands that gently lower the lights, preventing damage to the fixture when adjusting their height.

The Octa OC-OF7 has a multi-voltage power supply for worldwide use (with optional adapter plug) and has a standard 5/8" receiver for light stands and accessories. The OC-OF7 can also be combined with the optional Raya OC-OSB80 32" Octa Softbox, which has been custom designed to modify the light output of this fixture.

Raya OC-OF7 Reviews

Octa Fluorescent 7-Socket Fixture 2-Light Softbox Kit is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Bargin The Raya two light kit works perfect with the Green Screen setup. Everything went together very easy, although it took some time placing the rods in the soft boxes. The air cushioned light stands was a nice feature. The Fluorescent light socket with the soft box attached was fairly light and easy to mount and remove. If you need lights for portrait or Green Screen work you can't beat this set of octagon soft boxes with the fourteen CFLs. I'm very pleased and feel this is one of the best bargains out there for this type of lighting. And again good quality for the price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great product I purchased the light for baby photography. So far so good. It is not easy to take apart, and reassemble, so this light is ideal for a studio. Would not recommend if you want to photograph at client's houses, or to take on location.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Initial findings right out of the box Immediate initial reaction. Cons: The way it is designed it is not very portable. Long setup time. May not have been designed for that though. Softbox rods are hard to work with. Not an issue if your setting up once and leaving up. Softbox requires the frame of the light for its inner support (the rods slide into it) so it will not stay in shape on its own for use without the light. Typical CFL bulb issue where it takes several minutes to come to full brightness. Not a flaw in manufacture. Just the characteristics of the bulb type. Threaded post at top of stand seems to keep the lights mounting bracket from seating far enough down to feel like its solid. Inner diffuser attachment system is very cheap and hard to work with. Pros: Stand seems plenty sturdy and is pretty light weight. Extends well and is easy to collapes and put away. Lights are light weight. Light output is adjustable to three levels via switches (and the switches don't feel cheap). Other light levels can be obtained by unscrewing bulds to reduce light. Outer diffuser goes on easy The real test will be during a full shoot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Bit Amazed Like most people, I don't often give out positive reviews. Not because I don't have reason, but once we get something in hand, no matter how blown away we might be, we're usually off to get busy with it. Reviews take time. Bad reviews are easier to follow through with 'cause we're angry and energized. Hence the far greater volume of negative reviews in circulation than positive. But occasionally something comes along to restore our faith in the world of design and manufacturing, and I have to take a few moments to show some gratitude and encouragement for what surprised me by totally surpassing my expectations. A bundle of gear like this for the low price asked had me braced for a disappointment. Then it was my expectation of disappointment that was disappointed. This is some nice gear... real nice. The materials, design, everything, just dead-on. I needed two extra auxiliary soft-boxes for video work, and didn't need something necessarily top-shelf, so I went low-budget. Turns out I got both: low-budget & top shelf. It's a pretty crazy configuration to boot, these seven spiral bulbs in a cluster. Artsy and functional. If I could change anything (and I'll be trying other bulb types for this), it would be that when the head is first switched on, the fluorescents need a few minutes to reach saturation, something to factor into setup time. I'm going to do some experimenting with dimmables (though there are two switches to activate either just three, four, or all seven bulbs for variable output), and LEDs. All in all, well-deserved praises to Raya Octa for keeping the quality level up where it should be. Cayce

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better then expected! Better then expected! Well made, durable, function great. Bought the package of two on sale and feel it was a steal. Not a snap open setup, but does matter, as I don't move the around much. Only complaint was they arrived with four broken bulbs. I now have a total of six of these lights and will not look back on the purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Softbox Kit I tested the softbox kit thoroughly - with my own third light fixtures.  The light kit works well for my modest needs. There are 2 switches to make 3 lighting configurations - a good idea!   Sure, it takes a lot of time assemble and then disassemble light fixtures as I dont have enough room for keeping them assembled, but thats a part of the deal. Two bulbs arrived broken but the issue was resolved quickly and gracefully with one phone call. This was my only phone call to B&H in some 30 years of relationship.  Thank you guys!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Similar to the other reviews... Overall the product is exactly as advertised. The bases (tripods) are nice and sturdy. The heads are solid with easy to use controls. And as others have said, it is a little challenging to get the support rods in for the hoods. Not terrible, but I would not want to be setting it up everyday. Mine will stay set-up in the studio.

Can the light level be adjusted, or is it always on ?
Asked by: Anonymous
Each fixture has two power switches so you can shut down half or all of the lights as you wish. You can also remove bulbs if you would like to do some fine tuning that way.

Is there a max wattage rating? per socket? total wattage? Are the sockets plastic or ceramic/porcelain? Will it accommodate a mix of different wattage bulbs?
Asked by: Anonymous
I would not mix CFL bulbs of different wattages, since that would potentially cause a mix of different color temperatures. The total internal heat of all 7 is roughly 190 watts, which causes the softbox to be warm but not dangerous. If you want less light, the seven bulbs are controlled by a pair of on/off switches, so you can switch on 3 or 4 or all 7.

Asked by: Fiercely F.
I did not see an increased temperature or heat while using the bulbs in this kit that affected it. I used up to the recommended watts as indicated and I have been amazed by the overall quality of natural lighting. This fixture will only support the 105 watt bulbs due to their size. A maximum 50 watt CFL bulb is recommended for each socket for a total of 350 watts which equals to 1400 watts tungsten light. The sockets appear to be plastic. I do not see the reason to mix wattage of bulbs, would not recommend.

Can I swamp the soft box on these lights with others soft boxes using a speed ring or umbrellas?
Asked by: Anonymous
Unlikely unless the other softboxes are Raya products - this doesn't have a Bowens mount. You could likely rig an umbrella

Can this be used as continuous lighting for videography purposes?
Asked by: Nil B.
From a customer stand point, I have enjoyed using the Octa Fluorescent 7- socket 2 light softbox kit due to the features of using the full spectrum of lighting or cutting back half depending on my level of light needed for photography sessions. There was no change in lighting temperature during usage and it gives a nice overall lighting even if used for videography.
