question
Would you explain the difference between the Leica 8X42 ultravid and the 8X42 noctivid? Are either armored?
The Ultravid HD-Plus is indeed based on an older mechanical and optical design that has been around for a long time. Its a true and tested performer. The Noctivid is Leica's newest optical and mechanical designs which many individuals at Leica Camera, Inc, worked on for over 6 years before introducing. It shows numerous easily noticeable improvements in performance over not only our existing Ultravid designs, but arguably has been referred to as the new performance benchmark for all. The Ultravid line is complete with 8 different models of full sized binoculars in 32 mm, 42 mm, and 50 mm objective lens models, while the Noctivid is only available in 8x42 and 10x42 models. Comparing apples to apples between the Leica 8x42 Ultravid HD-Plus, and the Leica 8x42 Noctivid binoculars, one immediately appreciates the Noctivids closer focus (almost 5 feet closer than the Ultravid product, down to near 6 feet) as well as the Noctivid's very obvious wider field-of-view (443 feet versus 389 feet at 1,000 yards). Especially when comparing in challenging lighting, the Noctivids superior light delivery is easily demonstrable and since delivered at very high transmission across the entire visible spectrum, the Noctivids high dynamic range lends itself to a seemingly unparalleled depth of focus front to back that offers amazing eye comfort. This feature also lends itself to a very quick focus system. With so much of the field from 50 feet to infinity in focus or near focus so at once, most users find they barely have to refocus and adjustments being made are mere degrees on the focus wheel. This means you are spending more time appreciating your subject in focus and less time trying to get the subject in focus.
