Shure SM58S Overview

Shure SM58S Vocal Microphone with On/Off Switch
Classic, legendary, and in demand, the Shure SM58S remains one of the most identifiable vocal microphones, relied on by live engineers, houses of worship, and singers throughout the world. It's built to sound great and live long, thanks to tour-worthy ruggedness and sensible appointments, including internal shock absorption, a built-in pop filter, and a capsule that keeps stage noise at bay. Day after day, the SM58 earns its reputation on big stages, in home studios, and everywhere in between. This version of the microphone features an integrated on/off switch and includes a microphone clip and a zippered pouch.
That Familiar Sound
With a midrange bump and a natural bass roll-off, the SM58 delivers a tone that's tailored for vocal clarity. Bring the mic up close for a full, warm, and bass-rich presence, or pull it back to get a more natural sound with reduced low frequencies and minimal "s" sounds.

Point the SM58 toward your source and away from unwanted sound; its cardioid polar pattern rejects much of what's behind it, significantly lowering the amount of stage bleed, monitor mix, or background noise that gets picked up by the mic.

Leave the Noise Behind
A pneumatic shockmount system in the SM58 absorbs vibrations to keep your sound clean and free of handling noise. This lets presenters and singers confidently hold the mic while speaking and performing, knowing that their voice is coming through prominently.

Built into the SM58 is a pop filter, which helps control wind and breath noise without requiring an external pop screen. Of course, external windscreens are available should you choose to accessorize your SM58.

On the Road Again
Enamel-coated metal construction and a steel-mesh grille make the SM58 highly resistant to wear, abuse, and the challenging conditions of live events.
Tech Notes
  • Dynamic capsule needs no phantom power
  • Balanced XLR 3-pin output jack for connection to a stage box, mic preamp, mixer, or audio interface
  • Break-resistant microphone clip rotates 180 degrees to ensure easy positioning

Kopul Premium Performance 3000 Series Neutrik XLR Male to XLR Female Microphone Cable (20', Black)

The black Kopul Premium Performance 3000 Series XLR Male to XLR Female Microphone Cable (20') is designed to be an extremely quiet and flexible cable that is ideal for the most demanding live sound and performance applications. The cable is engineered to be durable and provide protection against EMI, RFI, and static noise. While the cable's color-coding affords the ability to quickly differentiate between multiple connections onstage, it provides a pleasant aesthetic quality at the same time.

Premium Performance 3000 Series cables are made from 24-AWG OFC copper wire that's wrapped with PE insulation and a conductive PVC inner shield. A cotton-yarn inner layer helps reduce electrostatic and microphonic noise. The 95% dual-spiral shielding makes the cable resistant to EMI and RFI noise. The Neutrik XX silver connectors provide a high level of connectivity, and all the solder connections are shrink-wrapped for protection.

95% dual-spiral shielding offers protection from EMI and RFI noise
Twin conductive PVC inner shielding provides 100% coverage of the core conductor. It helps keep the cable's signal from radiating and affecting nearby cables and helps prevents external EMI from penetrating to the cable's core
24-AWG oxygen-free stranded copper inner core provides the best possible conductivity
Cotton yarn reduces electrostatic and microphonic noise
All solder points shrink-wrapped for protection
Neutrik XX silver connectors offer high conductivity
Caged type contact and improved ground contact

Auray WHF-158 Foam Windscreen for 1-5/8" Diameter Microphones (Black)

The black Auray WHF Series Foam Windscreens are designed to reduce unwanted broadband wind noise and vocal pops with minimal high frequency loss.

This WHF-158 Foam Windscreen is designed for use with many common handheld microphones with a 1-5/8" diameter head. The density of the specialty acoustic foam is optimized to help protect the microphone element from air bursts without muffling the sound.

When used on a handheld microphone, this windscreen is effective in minimizing wind noise and plosive sounds. It is most effective in calm to light breeze conditions (0 to 7 mph) and can be used indoors for protection against drafts caused by air-conditioners. Users can generally expect a 4 to 8 dB reduction in wind noise with very slight dampening of high frequencies. For most applications, the very slight high-frequency dampening is a worthwhile exchange for the notable wind noise reduction.

The WHF-158's foam is hypoallergenic and washable and helps prevent moisture and dirt from damaging your microphone. The windscreen is designed to fit microphones from Shure, Electro-Voice, AKG, Audio-Technica, Audix, Beyerdynamic, Sennheiser, Neumann and others.

The WHF-158 Foam Windscreen for 1-5/8" Diameter Microphones is an effective solution for basic wind protection.

question

I want to add a mic to a sound system at my church-if the plug in are a 3 prong configuration will this work or are there different 3 prong configurations so that all 3 prongs may not be compatable?
Asked by: larry g.
The 3 prong connectors are called XLR inputs. XLR inputs on most analog and digital mixers are universal. Sometimes in broadcast situations working with video or IFB systems they have different kind of XLR inputs that usually have more than 3 pins. The Shure SM58 is one of the most commonly used microphones ever. Chances are that if the mixer in your church has 3 pins, it will work with this mic and many other microphones like it.

What's the best 1/4" adapter for the cable?

What's the best 1/4" adapter for the cable?
Asked by: Laura
Rather than getting an adapter, you may want to use an XLR to 1/4" cable instead, such as the Audio-Technica AT-8311 1/4" T/S Male to 3-pin XLR Female Microphone Cable - 25' (B&H # AUAT831125). That would be the easiest solution. If you do prefer using an adapter instead, you could use the Shure A85F - Low to High Impedance Microphone Matching Transformer - In-Line XLR Female to 1/4" Male (B&H # SHA85F) or Hosa Technology MIT-435 Impedance Transformer - Low-Z Female XLR to Hi-Z Male 1/4" Phone Jack (B&H # HOMIT435).

Would the SM57 be better than SM58 for ...

Would the SM57 be better than SM58 for interviewing a subject out in the field? Can it isolate the speakers voice over passerby’s on the street well? I imagine SM58 working best in a studio environment but I’m not sure.
Asked by: Nailah
Both the SM57 and SM58 are both dynamic microphones with a cardioid pickup pattern designed to isolate the main sound source and minimize background noise. Both are more sensitive to sound coming from in front of the mic and less sensitive to sound from the sides, while ignoring sound coming from the back. Both mics work equally well in loud environments and can be used for recording interviews outdoors. If you do decide to purchase this kit, do some test recordings to see which mic complements your subject's voice best.

question

What is the length of the XLR cable?
Asked by: Attila K.
It should say in the specs tab (under the image), but I believe it's 20 feet. We bought an additional 25-foot XLR cable in addition to this kit. Used it in conjunction with a PressMite mult box and were told by TV cameramen that it was excellent sound.

question

The product highlights description lists an Aurey stand, but later in specs the description lists a Jamstands stand, which will the set come with?
Asked by: Anonymous
The set I bought came with an Auray microphone stand with fixed boom. The model number on the box is MS-5230F. The stand has worked well for me. It is a basic stand but does what I need. The microphone is great though. Very happy with it.
