Shure SM58 Overview

  • 1Description

The Shure SM58S Vocal Microphone features a unidirectional (cardioid) dynamic vocal design, well suited for professional vocal use in live performances, sound reinforcement, and studio recording. A built-in spherical filter minimizes wind and breath "pop" noise, while the cardioid pickup pattern isolates the main sound source while minimizing unwanted background noise. The microphone offers durable construction, a high-quality, internal shock-mount system, and a steel mesh grille for withstanding rough handling. The SM58S is designed to perform consistently both outdoors and indoors, and when used for singing or speech applications. The microphone features an integrated on/off switch and includes a microphone clip and a zippered pouch.

  • Frequency response tailored for vocals, with brightened midrange and bass roll-off
  • Uniform cardioid pickup pattern isolates the main sound source and minimizes background noise
  • Pneumatic shockmount system cuts down handling noise
  • Effective, built-in spherical wind and pop filter
  • Supplied with break-resistant microphone clip that rotates 180 degrees
  • High quality, rugged, and reliable
  • Cardioid (unidirectional) dynamic
  • Frequency response: 50 Hz to 15 kHz

    Shure SM58 Reviews

SM58S Vocal Microphone with On/Off Switch is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 31.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Schure SM58S Rock for Podcasting I am a newbie podcaster and I'm not quite ready to sink $350 into a new dynamic mic. Thus, I bought the SM58S as a lower-cost compromise and I have been very happy. I'm using it with a Behringer 1202 mixer hooked up to a Roland R-05 recorder and the sound quality is awesome. One thing about the pop filter though - all of the reviews/videos I looked at said you did not need a pop filter or windscreen because there was one built internally into the SM58. But I was still getting a lot to popping on the mic. I have since added the $6 windscreen and there have been no problems.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Time-Tested Workhorse The Shure SM58 never fails. Love this family of microphones, and especially like having the on/off switch. The only thing keeping me from issuing a 5-star review is that the switch itself is a touch looser than I would like it to be, leading to concerns about its usefulness over the long-term. At the moment, this is (hopefully) a minor quibble of mine. A durable and excellent overall microphone, especially considering the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Its a clasic! I bought the microphone for my daughter who is starting in singing. Oops ... I should have bought one for me too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It is what I expect I use an SM58S Vocal Microphone in karaoke. The sound output through a system of a mixer, Denon AVR X2100W amplifier and Klipch speakers is warm and clear. There is not too much bass. The handling noise is acceptable. This microphone has an On / Off switch so that I can turn it off when not in use. I like this one more than the one without On / Off switch. I felt it a little heavier when I held it and sang for several songs. However, I believe a good microphone should not be light. If I want to buy one more, I would buy it again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Happy with purchase! We use these mics as rentals; mostly at podiums in our event spaces. They are really reliable, provide a good quality sound, and take a lot of abuse (I once saw one used as a gavel during a meeting - we strongly advise against that.)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from SM58...a classic! I bought the SM58 for home recording. I record in my living room and therefore a large diaphragm condenser microphone is just not going to work for me. The SM58 is very directional and for the most part ignores the various noises that are all around my apartment building. Once I cleaned up the low end with some EQ, the recordings I obtained with the SM58 were quite good and usable. You will need an in-line mic pre-amp to get a good signal for your interface. I'm very happy with the SM58!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best microphone for voice I bought this microphone for singing and I understand now why it is so commonly used for this. My voice is so warm and true to life with this device. A very good value for the money!

would this work well for being on a mic stand and two people singing into it?
    Asked by: Mark
Would not recommend for two people. The microphone is designed for one person at close range. It does not pick up sounds from the left and right of the microphone. Cannot get each person close enough to the microphone to pick up both voices. If you can afford two of them you would be better off and definitely worth the money. The switch works quietly with no popping during on and off.
