Elinchrom EL19366 overview

  • 1Description

With the EL-Skyport Transmitter Pro for Canon, Elinchrom introduced a game-changing wireless solution that's compatible with three generations of transceivers and flash heads and offers Hi-Sync flash sync speeds up to 1/8000 sec.

The 20-channel transmitter is immediately recognizable by its large LCD screen that displays every light in your setup. The Skyport Pro will control the modeling light and flash intensity of BRX, D-Lite RX, ELC Pro HD, and ELB flash heads as well as the EL-Skyport Transceiver RX for the Style RX, Digital RX, and Ranger RX systems. Operating on the 2.4 GHz frequency, it has an enhanced wireless range too, triggering and controlling your flash heads at a distance of 196' indoors and 656' outdoors.

One of the transceivers most exciting features is Hi-Sync technology that lets you use shutter speeds up to 1/8000 of a second, far shorter than your camera's standard sync speed. Whether you use it to overpower the sun, freeze action, darken backgrounds, or select wider apertures, Hi-Sync opens up a new realm of exposure possibilities. You can even fine tune the transmitter's trigger signal with ODS (Over Drive Sync) for optimal exposures at high shutter speeds.

The EL-Skyport Transmitter Pro runs on AA batteries and has a future-proofing mini-USB connection for firmware updates.

Visual Feedback Interface
The large LCD display of the Skyport Pro features two-way control via a Visual Feedback Interface that lets you see the exact power of every light in your setup right on the transmitter. Users control each light's power level and modeling lamp setting directly from the Skyport transmitter, which instantly shows the updated power settings.
Hi-Sync Technology
Go beyond the X-Sync of your camera. Photographers can simply switch to Hi-Sync mode and access sync speeds up to 1/8000s to freeze motion, overpower the sun, darken backgrounds, or use a wider aperture. The new ODS (Over Drive Sync) enables users to fine tune the Skyport plus HS transmitter's trigger signal to optimize exposure at high shutter speeds while gaining up to two more f-stops of light.
Impressive Wireless Range
The Skyport Pro has 20 frequency channels that can be used for either Normal or Speed mode, and a wireless range of 656' outdoors and 196' indoors. It also features a mini-USB socket for firmware updates. Users can instantly distinguish what sync mode they are in since the backlit display glows green for normal sync mode, and red for speed sync mode.
The Skyport Pro represents a seamless extension of the EL-Skyport family since it is also compatible with the three previous generations of flash units including the EL- Skyport Transceiver RX module for Style RX, Digital RX, and Ranger RX systems and the integrated EL-Skyport modules for the BRX, D-Lite RX, ELC Pro HD, and ELB series. The Skyport Pro adds synchronization capability and two-way control functionality to all Elinchrom lights with EL-Skyport capability.
LCD Display
The LCD display shows each strobe unit's power settings and allows for full control of all strobes right on top of the Skyport Pro. The individual strobes show up automatically on the screen, and you can adjust the settings on top of the transceiver or on the strobe itself. You can see and control up to 10 different EL strobes with the HS transmitter.
AF Assist Light
The Skyport Pro also includes an autofocus assist feature to help cameras focus in low light situations. This avoids using the flash unit's modeling light which drains battery power.

    Elinchrom EL19366 reviews

EL-Skyport Transmitter Plus HS for Canon is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 21.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A worthy upgrade I have a hodgepodge of Elinchrom units purchased over the past 20 years... The first A/S unit triggered from a Skyport universal, several RX1200 heads, and an RX2400 with an action head. So, I bought this unit expecting it wouldn't work, at least not well. To my surprise it works very well. Okay, I'm not getting 1/8000 sec sync but I've tested with all my lights being used and I get 1/1000 sec sync (after playing with ODS a bit). This is excellent for my purposes. Another plus is the IR focus assist. Kills the delays in camera focus when using dim studio lights. I am happy to report that this works with my mix of Elinchrom equipment.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Big step forward for Elinchrom I've been using Elinchrom for the past 6 years and have come to love their strobes and especially their lighting modifiers. Their transmitter has always been their achilles heel, however. The new Skyport Plus HS aims to put them right back up there with the competition and promises great backwards compatibility as well as new heads to allow anyone to HS at any shutter speed. I am a wedding, family, and senior photographer and I use Elinchrom units on location (Ranger RX Speed AS) as well as in the studio with everything from the D-Lites to the ELC Pro 1000. Coming from the pitiful Skyport transmitters of yesteryear, these Plus HS units vastly improve everything on the old ones and now include an infrared AF assist and a screen which provides you with the ability to see the power settings on each remote unit. (The hot shoe is another notable step forward and closely matches the Canon 600EX-RT hot shoe) At the moment I believe there are a few bugs to be ironed out, such as my units not properly displaying on the screen (ELC PRO HD 1000 in particular) and I often have to rescan to get the unit to display again. This doesn't affect the transmitter's ability to control power or fire the units, I think it's a bug that they will hopefully solve via a firmware update at some point. Oddly enough, my older BRX500 units display perfectly every time which is great because I have a unit up very high for hair lighting and that's always been a major problem for me to adjust. As far as HS goes, I haven't been able to push my Ranger RX Speed AS past 1/500 on my 1DX without any visible banding but then again I am using the A Action head. With a S head on backorder, I hope to be able to HS to full 1/8000 sec. I do hear that Nikon's HS better than Canon's do but that remains to be seen. I doubt I will ever use HS in the studio but again, my ELC PRO 1000 heads are my main units and don't seem to be displaying properly as of 11/3/2015. After about a week of use I'm very confident that I'll never touch the old Skyport transmitters again (which I have 3 of because they never seem to work properly). I'll try to update once I get my S head and I'll see if there is a fix for the ELC units not displaying. Overall if you have the older generation Skyport transmitter, I'd tell you to jump right on this unit to start learning and taking advantage of all of the new features.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Elinchrom owner's dream come true Being a happy Elinchrom owner now I am happier. The newly release EL-Skyport Plus HS is a great addition to the Elinchrom lighting system. I've enjoy the original Skyport for so many years. They are very light and small and reliable. Now with this Plus HS I can do high synch with my current owned strobes (BX500RI, Qudra). The devise is very solid made. The construction is very similar to Canon's ST-E3-RT. The user interface is simple(You basically don't need t oread user's manual). It can control a lots of earlier models but some devices do not have enough information displayed on the display panel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works perfectly... I'm still getting used to this new transmitter. I read up on the unit and so far it has worked perfectly well for four recent shoots. Learning it is not as intuitive as I might have hoped but, I'm understanding it better with each use. I haven't needed to utilize HS yet. I really like that it can put out the IR beam to aid in AF for my Canon.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from mixed bag It's not always a good idea to be an 'early-adaptor'. I bought this because of it's touted High Sync Speed capability to go with my Ranger Quadra Hybrid lights. I often shoot location portraiture and hoped it would give me a chance to shoot wide open more. But first I had to figure out how to get the PLUS HS to recognize my lights. That was a struggle. Elinchrom's instructions aren't very helpful. Nor was their website. I Ended up chatting with B&H. I also sent email to Elinchrom support which did answer with this... 1. Switch on the EL-Skyport receiver in the unit 2. Set Group and Frequency channel to 1 3. Set the sync mode of the Quadra Hybrid unit to NORMAL SYNC mode Please set also the Transmitter to NORMAL SYNC mode under the ELSP feature, the backlit display should appear green. When done all this, switch the Quadra Hybrid on and then switch on the Transmitter Plus HS, now it will start to scan the available units in the studio. That still didn't solve my issue. I ultimately figured it out. My Hybrid was set for high speed sync as well and had to be changed to normal. On the Quadra Hybrid it must be set. on group 1 on frequency 1 sync mode to normal (not off or high speed sync) The new transmitter Plus HS must be in group 1 and frequency 1. So far it's been ok. I've had to reset it to recognize my flash units a couple times. But once the session has started with it recognized it's run flawless. I have run a few tests indoors with the high-speed sync capability. I've been able to get exposures at 500 and 1000th. There is some frame clipping which can be adjusted. If I was outside I believe they'd be workable, giving me up to two and a half stops over my Canon's current 200th. I give this 3 stars because of Elinchrom's poor instructions/quick start guide and because I've had to reset it several times.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Brings Hi-Sync to all my Elinchrom Monolights Still testing with each of my Elinchrom monolight flash heads and it will fire all of them without fail. How well it integrates with each model I already own is interesting. Elinchrom states that the D-lite4 IT will support Hi-Sync flash sync and will only trigger the light. So far that seems to work fine. The BXRi 500 is Not Compatible for Hi-Sync, but will control the power levels of the monolight. It also seems to work in Hi-Sync along with the Style RX 1200 with Transceiver RX. The Style RX 1200 with Transceiver RX is only light I have that shows up after a scan, but you can adjust the power and modeling light settings on the EL-Skyport on both these monolights. You don't see the power level on the EL-Skyport but you can see and hear it change on the monolight itself. It seems to be talking well with the four Canon bodies that I have tested 5D M III, 40D, 5D and S1. Giving you all the options that you would expect with an external flash from the camera's menu; TTL or Manual mode, HS, first or second shutter and flash compensation. Now I can take a shot with a shutter speed of 1/1000 to 1/8000 of a second and there is no black line. Not sure if there is drop off, but not much from what I see so far. My portable studio D-Lite 4 will get to play outside more often as they will provide 5 times the power of any camera flash. I'm interested in testing with EL-Skyport Universal for firing my other flash heads and how much flexibility it will allow with all my flash equipment. Wish this was out I would have invested in Elinchrom Battery Powered Heads and not another brand (minus one star for being late to the market). I'm impressed with the overall quality of the product and the mount to the camera seem better that most with a rubber shoe that drops in place when locked. Powered by two AA batteries is a plus as well.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice built quality but... Nice built quality, Big screen, Attaches Securely (like canon flash) Works with 2 X AA batteries If you have some mobile elinchrom flash with hs head this is great... But its not high speed snyc more than 1/200 with ELC HD PRO 1000. If your ELC 1000 go to stand by mode and if you touch the any button of transmitter every flashes are freeze. Its need a urgent firmware update.
