Leica 40318 overview

  • 1Description

Leica puts a new spin on their perennial favorite, the 8x42 Trinovid HD Binocular with phase corrected prisms that are coated with highly reflective multi-coatings to increase reflectivity, and anti-reflection fully multi-coated optics to boost light transmission through the lenses. These optical coatings work together to produce high-contrast images with true color rendition and minimal distortion. This optical performance is coupled with a comfortable 8x magnification, wide exit pupil and generous eye relief to produce an immersive viewing experience.

Complementing the views produced by the Trinovid HD are construction details that make this optic able to stand up to the rigors of a life lived on the trail. First is a lightweight, sturdy, and corrosion-resistant magnesium alloy chassis that makes this binocular light and easy to handle. The body is covered with a textured rubber armor that protects it from bumps and impacts while giving it a slip-resistant grip in cold or wet conditions. Its optical tubes are nitrogen-filled and O-ring sealed to make it waterproof and submersible as well as fogproof when moving between extreme temperature fluctuations. To make handling the Trinovid easier are tethered objective lens covers that flip down and out of the way for observing, plus an ocular rainguard that attaches to the strap. Leica also includes their Adventure Strap system, which is a unique harness system that can be configured multiple ways for easier carrying and handling, while also doubling as a soft carrying bag to protect the binocular when not in use.

Leica 40318 reviews

8x42 Trinovid HD Binocular is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love them Was unable to try in a store so I just guessed what Bins would be best for me. I love the glass in these, they feel heavy but that goes with the quality of glass. Not crazy about the fact there was no case and only the harness. Have only used the harness around the house but not sure how I feel about it yet. the other negative was that the cover from the eye piece is attached to the harness strap of neck strap. I will interchange using these two items so I need to purchase a permanent strap to hold the cover when not in use. Those are the only reason they don't get the 5 star. But the focus and all the other features are great and worthy of a 5 star rating.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from What was Leica thinking??? What was Leica thinking of when they broke with tradition and provided a fine binocular with two serious flaws. 1. The trinovid HD is provided without a case, but with a crazy uncomfortable one-size-fits all halter. 2. The strap eyelets are smaller than standard so you cannot use a standard sized Leica strap. Instead you are forced to use the cheap skinny strap that was provided with the binoculars. bad design does not usually make it out of the factory, but these Portuguese-made binocs have two glaring errors which don't affect the optical quality but do make the glasses less usable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great bins I have been a birder for 45 years, my wife for 30. She wanted a smaller (8x) pair of bins. I had bought her the Nikon Premiers, but with not too much use they quite frankly fell apart. Being to much of a procrastinator to send them in for repair, I got her these for xmas. She loves them, and I like to look through them as well, but I do like by Swarovski EL 10x's for my everyday birding. Light weight and very sharp. The case/strap they come with is not good, but hardly a problem.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ornithology Up Close and Personal I'm new to birding and needed the best to accurately identify my birds. These binoculars are absolutely the best allowing me to observe colors and details in a wide range of distance and lighting conditions. In addition, I'm into butterflies and other pollinators and these binoculars allow close up viewing. The case doubles as the perfect birding harness. After ordering I promptly received my binoculars. They were safely packaged and arrived in perfect condition. I'm very happy with my purchase and I'll never need to buy binoculars again.
