Leica 40342 overview

  • 1Description

Inspired by their iconic full-sized counterpart, the Leica 8x20 Trinovid BCA Binocular is outfitted with a moderate magnification and small objectives to deliver the performance users have come to expect from the brand, but in a highly portable and easy-to-carry design.

It is designed with a combination of phase-corrected BAK4 roof prisms, the proprietary HighLux system, and HDC fully multi-coated optics to produce bright and clear color-neutral images, while fitting comfortably in the hand for long, fatigue-free glassing sessions. The HDC coatings add abrasion-resistance to protect the exterior lens surfaces, and the lenses are also treated with AquaDura coatings which make it easy to clean dirt, grime, oils, sap, and fingerprints without leaving residues that can interfere with views.

Designed to easily fit in a pocket, pack, or purse, the binocular is made with a dual-hinge system that allows the optical tubes to fold and tuck under the closed bridge to ensure the smallest form factor when fully closed. This also provides a wide interpupillary distance adjustment for easier use by those with narrow faces — like children and adolescents. Helping to reduce the weight to a mere 8 ounces is an aluminum alloy chassis that is wrapped in a protective slip-resistant armor for a more comfortable feel in the hand. Light, compact, and easy-to-use while delivering bright and clear images, the Trinovid BCA is made to be your constant companion on the trail, at the stadium, or sightseeing around the world.

Optical Performance
  • Moderate 8x power magnifies views while preserving a generous field of view
  • Compact 20mm objective lenses ensure slim optical tubes to maintain a compact form
  • BAK4 roof prisms deliver a round exit pupil, and a crisp and clear image with limited edge distortion
  • P40 phase-correcting prism coatings increase light transmission while improving contrast and clarity
  • HDC fully multi-coated system has abrasion-resistant and anti-reflection properties to protect exterior lens surfaces, and improve light transmission and contrast
  • HighLux-System (HLS) maximizes light throughput to improve color rendition and contrast
  • Hydrophobic AquaDura coating on external optical surfaces allows dirt, dust, and fingerprints to be removed easily
  • 340-foot field of view at 1000 yards
Use and Handling
  • Closed-bridge/dual-hinge configuration provides a sturdy platform for the internal focusing mechanism
  • Textured low-profile center focusing wheel helps to maintain an overall compact form
  • Wide 32-74mm interpupillary distance range accommodates use by a wide variety of users — especially those with narrow faces like children and adolescents
  • ±3.5 right-eye dioptric correction allows user to compensate for optical prescription
  • Twist-up rubber eyecups for comfortable use with or without eyewear
  • 14mm eye relief
  • 2.5mm exit pupil

Leica 40342 reviews

8x20 Trinovid BCA Binocular is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Life Long Friends I bought mine as a graduation present in 1984. As I recall, they were just $at a local high end camera store. I have taken them around the world an uncountable number of times. They have been on (not in) the water, and in the Himalayas. They go on road trips. They are as sharp now as the day I bought them (to go to a Moody Blues concert that eve). Their compact size demands that they 'come with' I even like them better than the Steiner's that I used to own (which were stolen as they were too bulky to follow with me that day). Before buying a pair of GOOD binoculars, go and buy a really cheap pair--and learn to appreciate the headaches and eye fatigue that the Leitz leave behind! The only complaint that I have is that the diopter adjustment ought to be lockable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Value If you don't plan on needing binoculars for low light situations, this is an excellent product. I purchased these binoculars after comparing with much more expensive full size models from Leica and Swarovski. In full light these offer virtually identical image quality (which is simply gorgeous, stunning), while being cheaper, smaller and more light weight to boot. They fold up very compactly so I never think twice about taking them with me, wherever I go. They have a very solid build and I believe come with Leica's lifetime warranty. I don't think I'll ever need another pair of binoculars. Cons: the only drawback I see for these binocs is the somewhat tight tolerances you need to have in lining them up with your eyes when wearing glasses. If not centered perfectly to your eye there may be a slight vignetting of the image, note this is not a problem if you don't wear glasses.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I would buy this product again. primary use at sporting events, theater shows and birding. Perfect size to take travelling. Takes time to get it adjusted and stabilized but once set, clarity is great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Good Compacts I wanted a pair of compact binoculars for carrying around. I have always liked Leitz binocs - I have owned a pair of Trinovid 10 x 50's for a number of years and for me, their performance is far superior to the obvious cometitors. I have not been disappointed with the 8 x 20's - while clearly not as bright they still have a color rendition and image pop that I have not found in others. A great value and a nice little package.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brighter than Zeiss Pleasantly surprised at the brightness and crystal clear optics. I did side by side comparison with my Zeiss 10 x 30 and the Leica won- greater clarity and brightness.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb Binoculars for on the move I owe Swarovski 10x42 EL's and they are great but hard to take when traveling. The Leeica 8x20 are prefect and the image quality is superb. I take them on all my trips and use them at my ranch when cruising around.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent binoculares I use these binoculars for backyard bird watching. I have small hands and they are very comfortable and light weight. I plan to use them at the theater as well and am confident they will be great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Optic at a bargain price Lightweight, clear and bright. For the money the best value in compact binoculars.I do not wear corrective lenses/glasses.Field of view may be narrow for hunting given the objective.
