Sekonic L-478DR-U overview

  • 1Description

Equipped with a large and intuitive 2.7" color touchscreen LCD and now featuring built-in radio flash power control and triggering for the PocketWizard ControlTL and standard wireless systems, the LiteMaster Pro L-478DR-U Light Meter from Sekonic will make incident metering for ambient and flash light super simple. The ability of this system enables complete control of the flash's power in 0.1-step increments. Along with this, the radio system has separate selection between 3 zones for ControlTL or 4 zones for standard triggering with measured values maintained for ratio determination.

Notable for the L-478 light meter series is the large color touchscreen, which allows for fast control over settings for both ambient and flash metering. The meter is quite capable as well, able to function within a range of -2 to 22.9 EV at ISO 100. Additionally, for the current crop of hybrid shooters this model expands on its standard stills functions with two distinct video modes: Cine and HD Cine. These settings give access to frame rate selection from 1-1,000 fps as well as shutter angle settings from 1-358° as well as ISO 850 for Canon cinema cameras.

Guaranteeing the best possible performance is a suite of functions and features that will ensure users have the best tools available to them. Among these is a flash analyzing function that uses ambient and flash simultaneously to allow for shooters to dial in their preferred mix. Also, using the included Data Transfer Software users will be able to do Exposure Profiling for their camera by using the optional 5° viewfinder, showing dynamic range limits and knowing that you will have an accurate exposure. Alongside this is a Filtration Compensation Mode that allows for the meter to account for filter factor, which can now be done at up to 12 EV for landscape shooters using high-density ND filters. Other features include a contrast function for comparing brightness, a memory mode for 9 readings, and illuminance or luminance measurement.

Lumisphere receptor head rotates 90° right and 180° left and retracts for conversion to a flat diffuser
Optional 5° viewfinder for spot metering
Ambient light measuring modes include aperture priority, shutter speed priority, TF priority, CINE, HD Cine, illuminance, and luminance
Flash can be measured with PC sync terminal connection, cordless, or radio triggering
Measuring range at ISO 100 of -2 to 22.9 EV with incident light or 3 to 19.9 EV with reflected light
ISO range of 3 to 409,600 in 1/3 steps, including 850 for Canon cinema cameras
Other functions: exposure profile, mid tone function, exposure compensation, filter compensation, multiple cumulative function, memory/clear/recall function, average function, contrast function, auto power off, touch panel lock
Runs on 2 AAA batteries, which must be purchased separately

    Sekonic L-478DR-U reviews

LiteMaster Pro L-478DR-U Light Meter for PocketWizard System is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light meter capabilities Light meter capabilities- i've used this light Master Pro now for three weeks . It's been more accurate, and easily read in the field and the studio for light my needs. I am a first year student at the local art institute, and having to shoot everything on manual mode. Although my Nikon reads very well in any light situation, the light meter itself provides a more accurate light measurement for any situation that I've come across. The additional benefit factor is the cost versus eight hire in light meter and provides all the necessary tools I need for at least the next three years. i'm sure that any enthusiast or beginner photographer would benefit from this light meter .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly What Y ou Need While most cameras now have excellent internal light meters they can only take into account the entire scene. Most times this is okay unless there are significant variations of light within the scene. The Sekonic Litemaster L-478DR-U is the perfect solution. It is simple, easy to use and always reliable. I use it always.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great all around meter This is a compact, versatile meter. The controls and interface are very good. So far I am using it primarily as a flash meter. The ability to mix flash and available light is straightforward and very helpful. I have yet to use the sync function with my Pocketwizard products but am looking forward to it...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Many Helpful features Light meters don't seem to get very many updates or new models from month to month or even year to year as do camera models. The original L-478 model is about 6 or so years old. This is a valuable tool for those who shoot either film (SLR) or digital. If you shoot portraits this is the perfect, fairly reasonably priced tool. I use it with my old Mamiya RZ67 Pro and a few other old manual cameras. With the scarcity and price of film, you don't want to miss a shot due to improper lighting exposure. This model works very well with the PocketWizard system. You can set up your speedlights or strobes and both test and adjust each different light to your needs. This saves valuable time and money. You can use the light meter as both a remote trigger for the lights as well as the camera shutter, as well as make all the changes to the lights directly on the light meter screen. If you have favorite lighting zones and setups is a breeze with the settings being saved into the light meter for quick recall and use. It is fairly complex and there are still settings I haven't used. The meter provides for an optional 5-degree viewfinder attachment for reflective metering. This allows for long distance measurements and I have found it very accurate and helpful especially for landscape and architectural use. Get 4-5 different readings from various spots, hit average and you have your own external multi-meter. Lastly, it's great to have Sekonic work together with several lighting and radio-transmitter companies. PocketWizard was the choice for me and it has made my life so much easier with lighting. Shooting film has never been easier and the digital mirrorless world is a breeze.
