Pelican 1550 Overview

The Pelican 1550TP Case with TrekPak Divider System (Black) is an unbreakable, watertight, airtight, chemical-resistant, corrosion, and dustproof hard case used to carry any kind of equipment that needs to be protected from the elements. The TrekPak Divider System is lighter than traditional padded dividers, uses preinstalled wall sections, and has divider panels, locking pins, plus an easy-to-use cutting tool. Simply lay your gear in the case, measure and cut the divider sections, and lock them in place with the steel U-pins. Extra divider material is included for when your equipment requirements vary. 7/16" thick divider sections are made with waterproof, closed-cell foam laminated to a rigid, corrugated plastic panel that resists tearing and shredding. The TrekPak is combined with 1" bottom foam and lid foam to give your gear 360-degree protection. The 1550TP case has the following certificates: IP67 (Ingress Protection) = 1-meter submersion for 30 minutes, MIL C-4150J (Military Standard), Defense Standard 81-41/STANAG4280 and ATA 300 specifications for transit cases.

I have a smaller Pelican case that I have used for years but I needed a larger case as my amount of photo gear has increased. This case is very durable, crush proof and not too heavy. The 1550 is not an airline case, too big, but for storage, protection and for putting in the trunk of your car it is perfect. The best part is the TrekPak divider system. You can organize your gear with no wasted space, designed any way you want while providing good protection for your gear. Plus you can reorganize the design if you add or change your gear (you can order extra TrekPak dividers if needed). My only complaint is the identification plate. Pelican has an engraving service but they only ship within the US (I'm in Canada).

I bought this to protect my Yamaha Sub-kick drum mic and stand. Fits perfect, easy to customize the foam and superb protection from Pelican!

Fits a fully loaded camera bag, 2 GVM lights with stands, and misc. plugs. It's a big cube, and not long enough to fit normal tripods or stands, but it will hold anything else you want to throw in it.

This thing could survive nuclear winter. I've also had to load and unload camera vans in the rain, and these things held up very well when exposed briefly to moisture. When you're not facing the worst that nature can give you, the other features of this case shine. It's ergonomic, the handle feels great, the two lock straps are very secure and have never broken. This particular size and model is pretty light and easy to carry in one hand. You might ask why a carrying case costs so much. It's because what's inside needs to be protected at all costs. My only gripe is that if you buy the case with foam, the pick-n-pluck foam can get gritty real fast if you're careless. I'd recommend ordering a custom molded or cut foam based on what you're packing 100% of the time. They always fit perfectly in Pelicans and never degrade as fast as the Pick-n-Plucks. If you're purchasing a Pelican without foam, it's an easy choice. If you purchase it with the foam, the entire package leans towards a 4 or 4.5/5 I've also used Pelicans that were over 5 years old and the locks

question

Can you fly with this case as a carry on? It looks an inch too wide but I wonder if airlines care.
Asked by: Anonymous
Its larger than the accepted standard for carry-on roller bags in the US. You'll run a very high risk of having it gate-checked. You're safer using the Pelican 1510. I've carried it on countless domestic flights.

question

The different pictures of this product all show different divider setups. Does each of these come with the same set of dividers and they are just showing the different configurations you can make?
Asked by: Chase
The dividers are a collection of different sized sections with Velcro on the ends and bottoms. You can configure the inside by how you put the various divider sections together.

question

I have a case that is 18.9 x 13.6 x 7.6 that I would like to put in this case but before I buy it I see that the pelican's size is 18.43 x 14 x 7.62 ....is the difference between 18.43 and 18.9 going to be a problem?
Asked by: Chase
I would ensure you measure at the shortest point inside the box. The box has a rounded corner on the outside which also transmits to the inside as well. You are working with a fairly small margin of error, plus you will need to account for hinges, latches, and the handle on your existing box. You may want to go up a size and purchase the foam insert to fill the excess space inside the box. Hope this helps.
