Gitzo GT5543XLS overview

  • 1Description

The GT5543XLS Systematic Series 5 Carbon Fiber Tripod from Gitzo is a high capacity carbon fiber tripod that represents the ultimate goals of the Systematic lineup—minimal weight, durability, and uncompromising stability. For those looking for the most stable support system possible, the Series 5 is designed to hold up to some of the most demanding setups with a large top casting and excellent stability.

Within the Series 5 line the GT5543XLS is given the "Extra Long" designation as it can extend from a minimum height of 3.9", to a maximum height of 78", all while maintaining an impressive weight capacity of 88 lb. Incorporating Gitzo's patented carbon eXact tubing, the GT5543XLS sports maximum rigidity while keeping its weight to an absolute minimum. Weighing just 6.9 lb allows the tripod it be easily carried or transported in the studio or out in the field. It's folded length of just 28.3" makes storing or travelling with the tripod easy and convenient.

The Systematic line also features an array of unique, patented, and useful features which set a standard for professional quality. The key design element of the series is the use of Gitzo's Carbon eXact tubes which are extremely rigid despite their lightweight design. The carbon tubing is complimented by Gitzo's G-Lock Ultra twist-locks which maintain stable, solid connections between leg sections and prevent joint damage by blocking out dirt, dust, and moisture. Each leg on the tripod features a 50mm rubber articulating foot, providing a stable and versatile base for setting the tripod on most surfaces. If required, the feet may be removed and replaced with optional metal spikes for increased stability in sand, dirt, mud, snow, and ice. The base of the tripod also features a 3/8"-16 Easy Link attachment thread, allowing the user to connect a variety of accessories to the tripod including magic arms, shoe adapters, LED lights, monitors, and more.

    Gitzo GT5543XLS reviews

GT5543XLS Systematic Series 5 Carbon Fiber Tripod (Extra Long) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stable and Versatile My experience with photographic tripods is perhaps like most other photography enthusiasts. I got my 1st cheapo tripod for my first digital camera. I got a 190X alum. for my 1st DSLR. When I started telephoto lenses, I upgraded to a 055PRO carbon. Later, for trips abroad and hikes,a GITZO traveler. However, all of these tripods lack the utmost stability for two of my hobbies: macro photography and manual gigapixel panoramas. I have been looking at the Systematic and once considered a Series 4 when GITZO switched to the G-lock Ultra for its Mountaineer tripods. I waited and the new Systematic line is finally here. This is perhaps the most stable GITZO tripod considering the versatile range of its height. It's already at table top height without any leg section extended, which is for my macro shots. With just 1 sec. extended, it's nearly common height. Then, eye level and overhead. I feel confident for the relatively complex setups, including micrometer-based rails and precision panoheads. There was a spirit level missing, but B&H helped. Thanks!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very expensive but worth it I have wanted one of these tripods for many years but only recently pulled the trigger. For the longest time I was using a heavy aluminum Bogen but with increasingly strict luggage restrictions, I needed something that folded shorter and weighed a bit less. The Gitzo series 5 XL is very sturdy for its weight (< 7lb) and folds down to a reasonable length. Initially I was going to choose the “long” model but I’m glad I went with the XL– two of three sections fully extended is the perfect height. + no center column, < 7lb, interchangeable feet, weight hook, sturdy build quality - price, no bag included

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Platform I use this tripod as a support for Canon 200mm F2 and 400mm F2.8 lenses and it is solid as a rock at all heights - and it does extend very high. Of course, you might feel that for the price you should also be able to drive it to the supermarket but if you restrict its use to what was intended, it will not let you down. The big feet are great in the studio but are replaceable for field work if you prefer. It can support 40kg, which explains why it is so solid at all heights but that is the reason I got it in the first place. It will drop to a few inches above the ground with a very simple spring loaded leg mechanism which is robust and allows the legs to be spread at different angles.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Support I have avoided Gitzo because of the price but this is the most stable tripod I have ever owned. Great feet get a solid grip on the surface and the tripod is stable at all heights from close to the ground to its full height. A hook under the centre plate allows weights to be hung on the tripod to significantly increase its weight (another reason I have avoided carbon fibre tripods). The twist locks are not an issue in terms of speed and the diameter of the legs is reassuring in the solid capacity of this tripod. The ability to spread the legs at different angles allows the tripod to be set up to provide stable support even on very irregular surfaces. I definitely should have invested in one of these a long time ago for the absolute rock solid platform it provides.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid build and versatile Having owned some lesser priced tripods I was frustrated with the lack of stability. After researching online via tripod reviews I found a couple of good cites there are a few heavyweight contenders to purchase from but the name “gitzo”seemed to rise as the leading contender. This tripod coupled with a good tripod head will serve me for years to come. If your recovering from a camera and lens purchase and need a tripod buy a cheap one. Then save up for the real deal. I like this tripods ability to drop down to 4 inches but with the ball head I was at 8 inches above ground level. That’s where the 3/8-16 female recess comes in handy when coupled with an articulated arm. Now I can quickly set up at just millimeters from the ground surface. I am highly recommend this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best and last tripod Recently went to Costa Rica with a Gitzo series 2. Many of my fellow photographers had the series 5 and it looked so great. When I got off the plane in Nashville I ordered the series 5. It is great. B/H got it to me in record time and with no hassles. It will be my last tripod. Handles my Nikon 500mm f4 just the way I have wanted. Not cheap but quality never is. I am using it now in Canada and will be using it for many years to come.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Top of the line and very stable This is a pro level heavy duty tripod. I use it with a gimbal head setup and long lenses. I'm sure there are lots of good tripods out there, but a pro recommended this for my needs. I don't regret my purchase. The build quality is excellent and it offers a very stable platform. It's not cheap, but you get what you pay for. Since I frequently shoot on uneven terrain, I opted for the XLS version. It will squat to under 4 inches in height and is rock solid at all leg and height positions. I put Lenscoat Legcoat 518 wraps on it and they fit perfectly. Incidentally, they were not the length recommended on their web site for this tripod. The length of the exposed main carbon tube is 17 3/4". If you can swallow the price tag, consider it an investment worthy of the much more expensive gear you're mounting on it. You won't regret your purchase. B&H are great folks to deal with.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from solid and so worth the price The price was a huge hurdle for me but once I got my tripod in hand and started using it I'm glad I made the purchase. I love the hight and am amazed at how solid of a base it makes for my camera. I have paired this with Wimberley Wh-200 so we'll see what hiking with it is like soon but so far the money I've shelled out for this is more than worth it!
