Gitzo Systematic GT4543LS Overview

The GT4543LS Systematic Series 4 Carbon Fiber Tripod from Gitzo is a high capacity carbon fiber tripod that represents the ultimate goals of the Systematic lineup—minimal weight, durability, and uncompromising stability. The Series 4 tripods provide a balance of size and sturdiness with a larger top casting than the Series 3.

Within the Series 4 line the GT4543LS is given the "Long" designation as it can extend from a minimum height of 3.9", to a maximum height of 62.2", all while maintaining an impressive weight capacity of 61.7 lb. Incorporating Gitzo's patented carbon eXact tubing, the GT4543LS sports maximum rigidity while keeping its weight to an absolute minimum. Weighing just 5.2 lb allows the tripod it be easily carried or transported in the studio or out in the field. It's folded length of just 24.0" makes storing or travelling with the tripod easy and convenient.

The Systematic line also features an array of unique, patented, and useful features which set a standard for professional quality. The key design element of the series is the use of Gitzo's Carbon eXact tubes which are extremely rigid despite their lightweight design. The carbon tubing is complimented by Gitzo's G-Lock Ultra twist-locks which maintain stable, solid connections between leg sections and prevent joint damage by blocking out dirt, dust, and moisture. Each leg on the tripod features a 50mm rubber articulating foot, providing a stable and versatile base for setting the tripod on most surfaces. If required, the feet may be removed and replaced with optional metal spikes for increased stability in sand, dirt, mud, snow, and ice. The base of the tripod also features a 3/8"-16 Easy Link attachment thread, allowing the user to connect a variety of accessories to the tripod including magic arms, shoe adapters, LED lights, monitors, and more.

Gitzo Systematic GT4543LS Reviews

Max Rigidity for Heavy Gear or Windy Conditions

This is an addition to my graduated collection of tripod legs - each assigned different use-cases and used for different equipment and settings. My previous "heavy hitter" is a "series 2" CF equivalent from another company (hint: made in USA, excellent reputation). With my most commonly used head on that one (a Platypod inverted ballhead) I was experiencing vibration (in part due to the ballhead, whose neck is perhaps not up to the weight / overhang / sail-effect of my heavier gear). Such as 5-6 lbs or a little more (think: pro body with built-in grip plus a 3 lb lens (400mm/4.5 or a 70-200/2.8 or others as examples). With these legs, and a new head (Sunwayfoto 70mm ball and 23mm neck diameter, not sold by B&H), even in high wind on mountain ridges, vibration is no longer an issue at all. Contrast: 37/33/29/25 vs 33/28.5/24.5/20.5 -- these are the outer diameters (that I measured with a caliper) of the leg sections (top to bottom) in millimeters. Stiffness of a tube is proportional to the outer diameter to the 4th power (minus the inner diameter to the 4th...). So, that last leg section, the smallest one, has the most stress and impacts results. If the wall thickness of the CF is the same (and I doubt that it is, this tripod's is most likely 25%-75% more, but I have not found data) then this one is about 1.7 to 2.5 times stiffer (based on smallest leg section). With the new head, this really shows: in long telephoto images (sometimes with a 1.4x teleconverter), in long exposure landscapes captured on a mountain ridge or pass in moderate to high winds, and so on. No vibration seen in the capture -- none. This one weighs a little over 5 lbs and my other is about 3-3/4 lbs. The new head adds about 1-1/2 lbs (maybe less) to the point I don't really feel much difference carrying the legs + head (in a padded bag slung across my shoulders over a photo backpack) while hiking. I probably wouldn't hike 8-10 miles with it, but up to 5 or 6 miles / 2 to 3 hours, no problem so far (and I'm retirement aged). So, it you want superb rigidity at minimum weight, consider these legs. I'm really glad I bought these legs, especially at a one-day price of about 40% off! NOTE: I'm about 5 ft 8 inches barefoot, so using these legs I do not need to extend the last (4th) leg section more than 7 inches in level ground, which reduces the stress on them, and that helps too. (If I extended them more, I would not be able to stand high enough to see through my viewfinder.)

Superb tripod

Gitzo makes great tripods. This is a beauty. I added the center post and replaced the Gitzo plates (which I don't like) with RRS plate (Arca-Swiss: It's the oooooonly way to fly! , as Western Airlines used to say).

Will a Gitzo G1318 center column fit on the GT4543LS tripod?
Asked by: Gerald
No, the (now discontinued) Gitzo G1318 Carbon Fiber Column would not be compatible for use with the Gitzo GT4543LS Systematic Series 4 Carbon Fiber Tripod (Long). However, the Gitzo GS3513S Rapid Center Column for Series 2, 3, and 4 Systematic Tripods, B&H # GIGS3513S, or the Gitzo GS3313GS Geared Center Column for Series 3 and 4 Systematic Tripods, B&H # GIGS3313GS, would be the options we carry that are compatible for use with the Gitzo GT4543LS Systematic Series 4 Carbon Fiber Tripod.
